  2. These guy's are not woodsmen, like Bucky was. I don't think they have been in the woods for two weeks and avoided the massive search teams looking for them. More likely to be holed up somewhere outside of the search area. Don't think they are sill together ether. If they were smart enough to break out, they have to know that it's easier to hide out on your own, going in different directions.

  3. Reminiscing on Father's Day this morning, I recall when my daughter was 15 wishing this thing had come with some sort of operator's manual. I had no idea what to do with it. Having lived through that period, she is now a wonderful, successful adult.

  5. This is only the 3'rd or 4'th Milk snake I've ever found. He was curled up sunning himself on a rock pile today but he slipped away before I could get a shot. I sat tight waiting for him to emerge again when I spotted him slithering out the other side of the pile towards a log pile. I pounced on him and made him my model for a little while. I finally had ALL my camera gear with me for a change so I set up a quick studio and fired away!

  8. I think you're underestimating the amount of hunters in NY who have the means and resources to hunt moose in NY should the opportunity arise....

  12. I've heard differing reports on the cost of the search for the two DB's in question. One report was 10 million and the other was 1 million a day, either way it is a small truck load of cash.... Why don't they offer $1,000,000 reward RIGHT NOW. If they are being helped out by anyone, a cool 7 figure number may be just enough for them to drop a dime. If they are spotted and turned in by some local yokel in East Cornhole TN who cares, give them the million bucks. Lets get this thing done............ Now back to your Father's Day Festivities.......................

  14. Correct me if I'm wrong...isn't one very intelligent and has a military background? Also we are talking early summer...you do not need to be a survivalist to manager a warm summer in the woods...you need to be motivated and intelligent....they prepared for months...who knows what they were reading and who they were enlisting help from.

  16. I bet they've been eating Aunt Bees pies that were cooling on the window sill. I also wonder if someone could get them sizable power tools, how hard would it have been to get them a day pack of clothes and some cash as well ?

  18. What would you say is the best path? Seems to me moose hunting in the ADK region would be great hunting opportunity for the hunters who live in that region. It's also a renewable resource that can benefit a lot of people in that area. I hope they do allow it and don't really care who was the influential party that got it done. Even if upper class hunters got it done, if it's allowed on a lottery basis, they don't have any more chance of hunting moose than any average hunter does. BTW, the next time you're in Maine, stop in and say "Hi".

  19. You're right, they don't compare but they ARE wonderful! I like the first one, if it could talk, what would he say? The second pic is awesome. That poor little bugger that is getting squished, you can just barely see his beak! The third one looks like he is saying "Happy Father's Day" as loud as he can.

  27. Honestly, I don't "LOL" any more about a bad cop getting killed or locked up any more than I do an honest citizen getting gunned down on the streets by a thug or a dirty cop. I could give a rats azz what happens to either of them perusing the lifestyle they chose. It really doesn't affect my life, but I do pay attention to what's going on and bank that information away in the back of my mind should a personal situation ever arise an encounter with either party.

  29. I didn't say they shouldn't be armed , Re-read my statement (assuming you can) . I got your "Reverand Al" right here Antsy ! Do you recall two police responding to a scene where someone was seen with a gun and in seconds gun downed a teenage kid that had a pellet gun .........duh ! The poor cops are on the defensive now and don't trust people when they respond to a call . They never know when someone is going to pull a gun on them .

  32. Experiencing the same thing! My daughter just turned 16... YIKES! Have to give them some freedom and trust that they'll make the right decisions. I make my presence and unpredictability known, so they never know where or when I might show up. I know what I was like at that age, so I don't expect her to be an angel, but I also don't want to be on the next season of "16 and Pregnant" either! My older son keeps an eye on her social media and keeps me informed of anything I should know about. Being a good big brother, he's concerned and looks out for her too! I have her convinced that I have a "special program" on my computer that monitors social media and gives met automatic updates.

  36. That's where I disagree. I find that justifying it with meat hunting opens the door and lowers their defense and then they become more willing to learn more about hunting. You can win a lot over this way. Those who still oppose it even after the meat hunting argument,...well, they're a lost cause and you'll never win those over. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  38. There are lots of folks into animal rights, but why isn't anyone concerned about vegetable's rights. After all, they are totally helpless in most cases, and unable to run or defend themselves. Morally, eating wild animals is actually the "higher ground", certainly higher than eating domestic livestock. I know I could survive on an all-venison diet. The Inuit people up in the far North easily go for months on nothing but reindeer meat, and have for centuries. To them and me, vegetables are "what food eats".

  39. I dont know about that. The average buck yields 50 pounds of meat, and that is if your shot is perfect, a little off and subtract ten pounds. We kill a lot of snow geese and Canada geese, but even the mourning doves add up. Regarding the pheasant, grouse and woodcock we get many meals each year.

  40. I would think that that is an easy one...When any species over populates it is detrimental to, not only said species but all other species they connect to...IE...overpopulation in raccoon ,fox, coyote can lead to rabies...rabies can spread to all warm blood animals. Over population of predators can lower the prey populations to where it is harmful to those species......Over population in Fox can lead to out breaks of mange that can last years and cause very slow miserable deaths by starvation and exposure...There is in all Ecosystems need for clear checks and balance...hunters are the most humane way of producing those checks and balances.

  41. I once posted an article about how much money hunter's contribute to conservation and that we should be proud to be able to say hunter's are America's premiere conservationists. I was surprised to see a rebuttal post telling me hunter's are not conservationists and have no right to claim to be. Seems to me, many within the hunting community have a lot of hatred for the average hunter. Unless you meet their standards of excellence, you're a slob they need to make excuses for. I worry this is the message they send to non-hunters when they speak to them.

  42. Oh, I'm not saying I don't bring this up whenever questioned or confronted. I just don't feel 100% sincere stating that this is one of the major reasons I take to the woods or water.

  43. Just my $.02, but I never felt the "hunting for meat" explanation held a whole lot of water, I seem to sense more respect when I tell a non-hunter or anti-hunter that hunters are the ultimate conservationists (which we are).

  44. The signal to noise ratio on this one got way bad. It is an important discussion and we shouldn't let those looking for opportunities to be offended allow the discussion to terminated. I did a quick back of the envelope count. I've done at least 15 public speaking events in the past 2 years that brought up hunting. Only one of these was to a hunting organization (Otsego County Federation). I've spoken at public schools, colleges, conferences, to bird clubs, a rotary club, a village speaker series. If each talk averaged 50 people, I've addressed over 700. People often come up to me afterward to talk. I know a little bit about talking to non-hunters about hunting. I always say I am a hunter during the presentation. I have never apologized, been defensive, hostile or disrespectful. I never underestimate the intelligence of my audience. You shouldn't either. Using a religious rationale is fine in context. It cannot be the sole rationale but can be put out there for those who believe it. It is important not to offend. Not everyone is a Christian. Preaching is patronizing and off putting - even here. If you find yourself in an argument with an omnivore, you can easily point out that anyone who eats meat is responsible for the death of an animal. You do not need to be morally superior. However, make it clear you take full responsibility for that death. It is not meat from a plastic package. Make them think. If you find your self in an argument with a vegan or vegetarian, you can agree to disagree. Meat eating is common in our culture. It is a valid argument that hunters are better at taking responsibility for animal deaths than McD's customers. The animals we eat also have had a better life. Since my public talks involve hunting because I address lead poisoning of wildlife, I offer a choice of a better way of hunting. I think this softens any opposition. There are good hunters and bad hunters (anyone looking to be offended can ignore this). There are better ways to hunt, and worse. Not everyone non-hunter knows this. They hear the worst stories. They need to hear from the good guys. I always ask the audience to take my lead-free literature and give it to hunters they know. If they are non-hunters - or even anti-hunters - I have given them an opportunity to do something good.

  45. Found my first fawn of the year today! He didn't stick around long so I only got one burst of him in the same pose before he was gone with the wind! ...also pretty happy to get my first decent shot of a kingfisher the other day! I hope to spend a little more time trying to get some better shots of these guys soon.

  46. I decided to sit down in the swamp for a while this morning to see what kind of birds were flying around. I saw some great action, but the highlight of my morning came when a hen wood duck came flapping out of the cat tails putting on the "lame duck" act while quacking up a storm. I thought she spotted me for a moment, but then something caught my eye from the shore where she came from. I thought it was a deer, or maybe a fawn at first, but suddenly I saw a little duckling run from the green forest and paddle for dear life once he hit the waters edge. A split second later, this fox came hot on it's heels and landed at the swamp edge in front of me. I was lucky to get 3 shots off before he turned tail and vanished before my eyes. This was a super cool encounter, and I was happy to come home with this shot! The duckling survived to see another day!
