  1. It's nearly impossible to try to draw on a deer that has caught you by surprise. It's almost a lost cause. Maybe the idea is to only hunt old deer that have similar problems. I've got to find only deaf and blind deer to try to even the odds .... lol.

  8. I am 73 years old and I wear glasses and have hearing aids in both ears. Not really the way I like to hunt with bow and gun but it is better then being a couch potato. Been doing it this way for past 10 ears.

  12. I didn't vote "Hardcore" because it doesn't consume me, and it never has. It's always been my #1 hobby and pastime, but I don't let it wreck other areas of my life like an alcoholic does by drinking to excess constantly. Given the time, I would rather be hunting than fishing, or most other hobbies for that matter. But my family and my grand daughter will always be able to ask for my time and get it without regret. (With the exception of opening days or a week already planned to hunt) I spend lots of my free time thinking about hunting, reading up on it, meeting friends who hunt, preparing gear, scouting, shooting, reloading and working with firearms in many ways, but it's done during my "free" time. Other life issues will always take priority. I don't use hunting as an escape from any of my responsibilities. All that being said, if I were ever to find myself unable to go hunting at all, I would be one very upset man with huge withdrawal symptoms, constantly trying to figure a way to improvise and adapt to satisfy my need for it. I don't think that's addiction as much as a real love for it.

  17. Sorry turkeyfeathers, plants with little red round berries and mushrooms are my weakness other than the obvious. I see those things around here too. Round and red I don't think is enough to go on for a good ID so I'm ok leaving them alone. What I thought was a big patch of ginseng last year turned out to be something entirely different when I looked at things more closely. I suppose with that philosophy, I really don't need to know the difference in varieties. They sure add some nice color to the woods this time of year though!

  24. I have had significant hearing loss . When I was in The Marine Corps we didn't have any hearing protection when shooting a rifle or the 81mm mortors . Worked several years in the Fabrication area of a large company . Part of it was in the the Punch Press area aka The Boob Boom Room . 800 ton presses pounding away . The operators had hearing protection but we in management didn't . When my mother in law passed away I inherited her hearing aids that she only wore a couple times because she didn't like them and had them set for my hearing . Amazing the sounds I pick up when wearing them . I don't wear them hunting as I am afraid of losing them . They originally cost around 5 grand . I sometimes smell the deer before I see them .

  25. IMO set cams up on the deer trails. Where I hunt I had set my stand up over some incredibly used trails. First 5 days of dark to dark I saw zero deer. I then bought a cam and set it. All those trails were only being used at night. Obviously you already know this but I was so sure I'd shoot a deer quickly into the season just by all the trails.

  27. I have suffered significant hearing loss in my left ear and some in my right ear... FORGET trying to hear things walking in the leaves.. I can't hear it until the critter is right on top of me, and then I have no idea what DIRECTION it is in.. I'm a little better on gobblers, but often the bird has to gobble several times for me to figure out what direction it is in.. I have been out with people with NORMAL hearing and invariably they hear birds that I cannot hear at all.. Want to hunt with a person who can hear REALLY well ? Hunt with a woman..Most of them have not been exposed to the gunfire, chainsaws , loud engines, and other machinery that has ruined the ears of many males.. My Mom was nearly 86 when she passed, and she was legally blind, but she could still hear a mouse fart 100 yards away.

  28. I downloaded it and went back to 7. It looks as if 10 is set up for facebook, twitter Ect. which I do not use. And it does not have some of the features that 7 has that I use.. Be prepared it takes quite some time to download.

  29. Wouldn't you think that in the design of any crank-style cocking device on a hunting weapon that absolute silence would be a natural "must-have" design criteria? .... lol

  31. The one thing I keep hearing about 10 is the amount of data mining it's capable of. Good for Microsoft, not so good for privacy. You can 'opt out' of a lot of it but you'll have to spend the time physically doing it. I'll stick with 7 until its no longer supported.

  32. It seems that everytime I upgrade operating systems, I find some existing software does not play well with it. There always seems to be some kind of hassle. Over the years, I have lost the use of thousands of dollars worth of software. I know that eventually there comes a time when you have to upgrade for compatibility with new software purchases. But I am going to wait until that issue arises. For me, I have never found improvements to be significant enough to warrant the additional hassles. Also, it seems like they are always changing something to things that don't work as conveniently as they used to. I'll wait until I have to, and hopefully I won't have to ..... lol. I'll be interested to see what others think.

  37. Headed down to the farm this morning loaded up with 3 stands, 2 sets of climbing sticks and all of the goodies to go along with them. Once we got down there, we came up with the game plan. Add a second stand to a set we call the Poison Ivy Stand and swap the screw in steps for ladder sticks, Pull a stand out that we call the Junk Pile stand, check things with other stands, clean up lanes and start looking for a new place for a stand we call the corner stand. That stand and the Junk Pile Stand both sat at different points on an inside corner of a field. Its a hot bed of activity right now, and through hunting season when the field is in corn, but this year its beans. The area dies off a bit after the beans are cut, but is still a funnel type area for the deer. Neither of the two stands are in quite the optimal spot, and they are about 130 yards apart. We figure we can pull one and put the other in the ideal spot for the funnel, so thats what we will do. We also wanted to swap a stand out that has rusty cables, so that we can replace the cables on that stand. We ended up getting everything done but move the corner stand and trim out access paths to a few sets. We will get that done tomorrow. We are also going to head to the other farm, hang a new double set and trim lanes there. After tomorrow, we should be almost completely done getting the prep work done. My daughter and I in the Poison Ivy Stand. Always a great stand, with a long history of successful hunts. Hopefully she will film me putting one on the ground here this year.

  38. Being an NRA member gives you certain insurance at no cost to you. You are covered if you injure someone else, or injure yourself. You even have life insurance if you die while participating in an outdoor activity. Annual NRA membership may give you everything you are looking to pay $300 for. Call the NRA for details. Another good reason to join the NRA.

  47. Starting making my own sausages has been awesome. This is the best smoked sausage I have made so far. I had to do a couple runs in the smoker I had to much to fit in one load. A home built big one would be cool. Share pics when you start that project gf!! Wooly we can work out some deal I am sure. I know there is some secret hunting/fishing spot you feel the need to tell me about!!
