  1. This one was taken in the afternoon around 4pm. back in 2013, think November 7th? In the one picture, I snapped a picture of a small 5 point that almost walked right up to my stand. This big guy must of smelled his prints and followed his trail right to my stand as well. rest is history!!! 1st 10 pointer taken in my life. Great feeling. Last picture is his mount on my wall.

  3. And still, with a crossbow, you have to have the skill and woodsmanship to consistently, put yourself 30 yards or so downwind of deer to kill them. Even with rifles, some "clowns" can only hope to get lucky. No matter what tool is in their hand. A good hunter is still a good hunter. A stumblebum in the woods is no threat to the deer population. Especially with a crossbow! Let full inclusion happen. And let each hunter decide for themselves what tool they want to hunt with.

The top left picture isn't mine a friend found it and I was lucky enough to be with him because it is his first shed he has ever found. 10. Very bad news flowing in tonight. I can't find Jenny ANYWHERE! I just got in touch with her best friend Natalie(aka Natty) who's dad just happens to be an undercover high ranking 8 star officer for the ABV! He just stopped over to take reports and talk to witnesses about Jenny's last where abouts.... I swear to you guys....., I HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH HER DISAPEARANCE!

  11. I'm in too. It's got to be the first shot of the day. Some guys have practice regiments all year long and others are starting to tone up the muscles and begin practice as the season approaches. But, practicing first and then taking a shot is cheating. It can be anytime of the day but It's got to be the first shot of the day before any practice shots. Who has other rules for this August Challenge? Who else is in.

  17. April 25'th of last spring. They should be peeking out of their holes in the next couple weeks here. I just checked in on 3 red dens today and two of them are active again this year. Pretty sure I got a yote den pegged too, but I didn't get a chance to check that one today.

  18. A hunter shouldn't be punished or criticized for not shooting doe, or if he shoots a small buck etc. as long as it's legal. Like many bow hunters I will harvest a doe or 2 during gun or muzzleloader. I prefer not to disrupt my stands or shoot a doe in warmer weather or the expense of a broken carbon arrow and an expensive rage head. A dead doe is a dead doe irregardless of the season she's harvested in.Opening day gun 2015

  20. Ya know, these "elite" hunters, are so worried about sharing the woods with, "noob, clown and brown it's down gun hunters". If you are a so much more, proficient hunter, why worry about "those" guys killing "your" deer? Shouldn't be a problem if you are the superior hunter, right?

  21. Where does every one come up with every gun hunter with a crossbow? If full inclusion happens a bow course is required to hunt with it.. so once you take the bow couse you are trained, or qualified, will some be new yes.. but they will be taught ethics and how a deer dies with hemoraging instead of shock lime a bullet. It seems this it the big argument against full inclusion. Mad crazy brown it's down hunters invading the woods... but this new bill allowing full inclusion removes this.. so the argument becomes invalid.. yes they will be new but so was I to archery and everyone else at some point...

  27. It doesn't matter to me if someone needs to use a crossbow as no one does on any property that I hunt on . Actually if it gets women and kids out there , great . Kids will get bored and most women can't go without perfume or hairspray so maybe they will spook deer from the adjacent property over to me . That would be a big plus . I don't support crossbows nor do I fight against them . I couldn't care less !

  29. A long time ago I was big into Coon hunting and competition nite hunts with Coon Hounds, I worked hard on keeping my dogs straight on Coon. I would break them from running any off game like Deer, Rabbits and Fox. Anyhow I purchased a silver phase Red Fox kit from an animal dealer to use for breaking my dogs. Silvers are basically black with some of the guard hair having white tips. Below is my little fox kit whom I named Roxy and one of my best English Coon Hounds Eli. Roxy grew up to be a beautiful fox especially in the winter when her coat was at it's best. So yes there are black Foxes. Al

  35. We need to be aggressive in our opposition to HSUS. As far as ammo for hunting goes, I don't think HSUS is promoting copper ammo as much as looking to ban all hunting ammo. Sure they can make a case against lead ammo, but they will not be happy if all hunting is done with copper ammo.

  36. That's my point- you're following tag numbers not actual deer numbers. You hunt in an area with no deer of course they can't kill what's there. You're point on separation holds some merit - your zone and area is nothing like the west. When you have the dec making up population numbers, handing out 60000 dmps in regions and you have a Hunter saturated area the addition of a gun Hunter derived weapon is a totally different deal. Too many closed minded folks think convenience in weapon or their entitlement- not that deer are an animal and resource....let alone one that's easily depleted. Spend one week in the woods as a vertical bow archer and your crusade here would've never surfaced. As for the yotes my kids too. Then again showed them how a trap won't break your hand and how coyote start by eating the hams of a live animal- nothing is fair in this world but being uneducated is a choice. Just remember that great force that I you're praising for strides w xbows and doe numbers says yotes have a negligible impact on the herd. Kool Aid tastes different now doesn't it?

  40. congrats on the hero thread. I agree- it will pass soon. Why? Because the DEC want deer numbers as low as possible. What better way to accomplish that than a group of selfish tail following fools with not even a scrap of conservation ethic? Too closed minded to know, or notice, until its too late. I'm not an elitist archer, I am an elitist hunter who got here through giving a crap about the animals, the environment and the activity. If you cared- your contribution would be closer to comparing your crossbow to a rifle not to that of a vertical bow or admitting the lack of dedication and vigor able bodied who want crossguns have.

  42. I'm definitely with you on the marketing of scent control products... IMO a waste of money for the most part..playing the wind will win over expensive products 9 out of 10 times.. Same goes for most camo.. Heck I wear it now admittedly because it looks cool..lol.. I haven't seen where I see more deer with it though..I'm sure I have killed more deer wearing jeans and a hoody.

  44. There are slight differences between indoor and outdoor range shooting but a couple of comments address the fact that field situations are far different. An adrenaline high can do all sorts of crazy stuff to the mind and body. Being a gun hunter for 50 years, before picking up the bow for the last six years, presents a hurdle to think about judging distance prior to release. The practice through attending 3D shoots has helped and it doesn't seem to be a issue now. Some of you also mentioned the first shot being the most important shot. I've never tried it but I like the "One shot per session" method of training concept. No warm up practice or monitoring sacrifice shots. The take aim and shoot is all you have when the game shows itself. Another practice I do while hunting is to practice draw. I may be a blind or stand where I plan to stay for a time. The practice draws at various objects give you a feel for your range of good shot locations and it doesn't hurt to provide muscle activity in cold weather. Other factors coming into play when measuring your skill level is bow tuning and arrow consistency. One surprise discovery I found was using a glow nock for the first time. The glow nock worked the nuts but I happen to notice my shots were consistently three inches low while the other arrows were spot on. H'mm? got the grain scale out and found the glow nock was 30gns heavier. Wow! That little 30gn difference dropped my arrow speed by 7%, resulting in the 3 inch drop at 30 yard difference. Back to the thread. My initial goal was to see if there was any standard way to measure proficiency and suggest a challenge to some sort of standard method by which we could judge ourselves. To compare how good we think we are with how good we really are. I allude to the comment "I'm never as good I think I am. So I strive to be as good as I can be." I liked that.
