  4. Just curious if you "putt" him out of strut so he sticks his head up outstretched . If he's displaying I'll give him a verbal "putt" so he's like WTF. It's the last thing he ever hears. I've shot one bird many years ago in strut. Took off most of the beard and riddled the breasts pretty bad. I don't get why on TV other than for good video why the shoot em all puffed up with head tucked low. Gotta say if anyone touches one off with these new Winchester XR's at close range that bird is toast.

  5. Just picked up this Glock Mod.19 ( 9mm) today . Had a Mod 23 ( 40 cal) since '92 but decided to consolidate some calibers , 40 ammo is pricey and 9 mm factory hollow points have come a long ways in recent years. Got it under the blue label program . Between selling the 40 with a few mags and tossing in some ammo and the BL program ,cost me $75 .

  8. In the past five or six years have gotten a lot more practical, as far as buying gear. I get it if I need it or if its a big improvement over what I already have. But when it comes to guns,,,Im completely out of control. I need group therapy .

  9. I figured I'd start up this thread for the 2016 spring season approaching. Guys/gals may be out scouting ahead of time so feel free to post what's happening out there. Next weekend is youth hunt. I wish everyone a wonderful ,safe and memorable season. Looking forward to stories and pics.

  10. After work today I was at Charles Tyrwhitt buying some clothes when I was interrupted by some guy and his security team. This guy came in to shop too and the store is pretty small. People outside were going nuts taking pics and stuff. I figured he was a politician or something, so I asked one of the security guards who this guy was and he said he's running for president. Who knew lol.... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  11. I'm going out tomorrow afternoon to try and catch some Browns and or cohoes. I went with a guide a couple years ago, there really isn't much to it this time of year. Just dragging stickbaits in shallow water. Having said that I welcome any and all tips!

  14. I prefer to have his neck stretched, but if he's close enough I just kill him. If he is in good range, I don't screw around..I kill him.. I have had too many encounters go bad at the last second.. I remember a quote from "The Old Pro Turkey Hunter" by Gene Nunnery.. " Whenever you are in contact with an adult gobbler, there are events taking place every second, any one of which may result in your winning or losing the game ." Or words to that effect. Did I mention the fact that when he is in range and I can get my gun on him, I KILL him.?

  15. Years ago, I was faced with this very situation. The gobbler was following a hen right towards me. Never came out of strut even with me calling. Took the shot at his head area only to find out afterwards that because of his head tucked down low into his body, I shot the dang beard clean off!!! Lesson learned the hard way for me, never again will I try that shot.

  18. Depends for me. First available shot I roll em.. Preferably wait till he comes out of strutt but if he gives me a full frontal view , even if his head is tucked he's history , but only if he's close , say within 15 yds , the pattern is so tight at that point aim for the beak n never really had an issue with pellets in the breasts. I've had a few heartbreakers that went bad giving them a cluck and all out haul ass outa there ... But I try to let it play out , if I think he's loosing interest or smells something fishy I'll give a few soft yelps so he sticks his kisser up to look ... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  19. Not sure where you are getting you numbers. our banquet alone will be 250 for just one NY branch. I do get a kick out of some that expect an organization of hunter to have immediate and controlling influence over a government agency. Hell as hunters we can't even get on the same page for simple causes like gun control. I have to disagree with you about what the "bottom line" is. What you describe and what some out there want it TDM. Trophy Deer Management. They are not the same approach. They have similar component like monitoring and adjusting the buck to doe ratios but the goals are not even close. TDM is focused on growing trophy racks. I also disagree about the "holding deer on their property" part. I know more members that either don't own property or own parcels that are too small to ever try and hold a population on them. That doesn't seem to diminish their desire or efforts to practice QDM. Seems pretty foolish for them I guess since you are so certain their motives are so selfish.

  20. In general , yes buying "American " is often harder . But an outdoorsman still can easily buy American made outdoor products. A few I own , tree stands , knives, flashlights , water bottles, guns, and up until Sentry moved to Mexico the safes to keep them all in. Toss in Redwing boots and some of the Danners. My Lone Wolf stands, Surefire lights , Benchmade, Spyderco and Stider knives are second to none , many with liftime no questions asked warranties . Not for hunting but my Allen Edmond shoes ,made in Wisconsin are well made quilty shoes that are recraftable, buy them once wear them for a lifetime . Also I lost count of the number of random women who compliment my shoes, at my age and shape that's worth the price of admission right there!

  21. I'll let this one rest gjs4. I understand both doe and I gave you unsolicited feedback. I'm doing pretty darn well too, but I'm always am open to constructive criticism. Our comments come from a good place. If you were trying to achieve a goal with your survey and were to share it with legislators or a special interest group, you're not going to get far. I've sat with executives who have dismissed a whole powerpoint presentation because the bullet formatting wasn't consistent. Just my .02.

  23. If you can't see the correlation of getting people out and exposed to the QDM concepts, showing them the benefits, instruction and seminars in habitat improvement, timber management and skills like aging on the hoof them I guess you may understand the concepts but do little to promote them outside your circle. That is fine. Your choice

  24. I have hiked the entire AT in NJ and NY all of it done on weekends and by bus or train from Manhattan. Granted it was many many years ago. Get yourself the 50 hikes close to NYC book and you'll won't be disappointed. My recommendation for a great short hike with great camping especially in the spring or fall because of the great raptor watching. Huckleberry trail in the catskills.

  26. Well these jerks want to buy the cow and retire it to some kind of sanctuary that they operate. I say great. It looks like the farmers of their area have a new alternative market. The farmers of that area ought to flood these creeps with all kinds of cattle for them to buy. Break the suckers .... lol. Let them put their money where their mouth is ...... ALL of their money.

  27. Just a minot rant so bear with me So I haven't watched any hunting on television in a long time but I am layed up for a few days so I put it on. Out of 7 shows on turkey hunting I've seen . 1. None have shown a turkey killed without a decoy setup in place. 2. None have show a bird killed in the woods. It's either an open field or a clearing on a logging road. 3. 3 have shown hunting with out a blind, out of 34 hunts between all 7 programs. 4. 4 actually used bow, 6 crossbow, the rest were gun hunts 5. 4 were women hunting, 3 with kids the rest were all pro staff men hunting. 6. 6 were filmed in ny, most were the mid west amd south. 7. 1 hunt talked about roosting birds the night before. 8. None explained the calls they were using or why 9. 24 hunts mentioned that they were champion callers.. I guess maybe local contest champion counts.. 10. Actually was impressed 5 were Jake hunts (unfortunately all were by kids or women) like men can't shoot a jake...???? They taste better imo Just kind of sickening the push for products you need to hunt turkey thay are not needed.. No one talked about patterning a gun few even talked about scouting ahead.. most was we saw some sign and set up.. Guess I am not a turkey hunter by tv standards.. no wonder people try it and give up.. or look like they are on expediton or safari with all the gear they carry. Anyone else remember the old videos that taught you something?

  33. I get critiqued for wearing modern-day color dress shirts (bright colors) at work. I was told I needed to buy white dress shirts or light blue, etc. Eventually...results overcame that. Now I'll be talking in front of 60 other leaders in 20 minutes and I'm donning a plaid neon pink/black/white dress shirt. So to tie it back - if the message is clear, the survey is what it is. I did find it strange that ~95% said they report their used tags but DEC documents a much lower percentage.

  34. the big guys don't film here so much. I did catch a show on the sportsman channel and I wish I remembered the name, but they put on some drives up in the Adirondacks. About a dozen guys pushed a few MOUNTAINS! The main guy didn't get a deer but one of the kids shot a small 6 and they all celebrated it. It was cool to see "normal" hunting. Additionally I do watch deer and deer hunting tv. And try to catch heartland bowhunters and buck commander for entertainment. Sometimes we assume every new hunter might think these shows reality but I'm not sure that many actually do. Most of us had a mentor, and someone going in blind is hopefully doing a little more research on websites like this than just watching the outdoor channel. I didn't have a mentor for turkey and gained a lot of knowledge watching some shows, the Drury brothers in particular had a show where they competed and scored based on different types of turkey hunts.

  35. We are departing NY around 8:00 this evening to make the 687 mile trek to Hardinsburg, KY. It was quite a task getting all of the gear ready to go as my wife and I moved into our house this past fall and I had to remember where everything was. It sure takes alot of gear to kill a few birds!!! We should pull into camp around 8-9:00 tomorrow morning just in time to get out and do some last minute scouting. The weather is supposed to be nice and I'm hoping the KY gobblers will be lonely and ready to play!!!

  36. When I was a kid my dad would bring home white hots from a butcher shop in Syracuse, I loved them. I haven't had any like them here in WNY. I don't know why they were better, it could just be my memory screwing with me!

  37. I will gladly pay any import tax if America can compete with goods from manufacturing at least on our own turf. It is one of the prime things that used to make America great in the first place.. I don't need half the shit my wife buys anyways. Go Trump!

  38. After watching those shows, a new hunter will take to the deer woods. And after sitting for half an hour, wonder why a 150 inch ten point hasn't followed a hot doe to his tree stand.

  39. Hope you get better soon G-Man. Those hunting shows on TV are for 'entertainment' purposes. They aren't meant to teach you anything, just sell product. To be honest they are sports entertainment, I would rather watch the WWE or basketball for sports entertainment.

  40. Anyone who hunts and isn't after the meat for themselves or another is a killer, not a hunter. Maybe you should consider raising pigs in a pen if you don't have patience and are just after meat...bet you could sportingly take em out with a bolt whenever you'd like too

  42. Well that statement clearly shows you are incapable of a conversation outside you agenda, you know nothing about firearms or both. Better stick with the Pot and Meth smoking and stay away from firearms. Semi Confined targets, unarmed, unarmored but movable and a rifle is the most efficient weapon? Especially in an untrained persons hands? The point is, they are going after the manufacturer for their pound of flesh. It has nothing to do with their assertions about the rifle used. wow....just wow.

  48. I like to use one of each (hen/jake) about 6-8ft apart and within 20yds of my set up. Jake usually get's and holds most of the attention from an approaching tom. Position him where you want your gobbler to be directly in front of him. Make sure you leave a tom some room to strut in front of the fakes. I just use the hen for added realism effect but she rarely gets any attention. She's always facing me so any gobbler that approaches her from the rear will be closing the distance to me.
