Last night headed out to the stand around 2:30 looked like a good night overcast light rain/ sleet. Get to the stand 3:00 climb up hang my backpack up getting ready to pull my bow up and 4 doe walk in on me. Sat and waited them out finally left around 3:30. Pulled my bow up got setup finally 4:00 comes around hit the grunt call 3 times hear a crutch behind me look and there he was coming right in. Gave me a 20 yard shot ran 40 yards and dropped! Boy I may get smashed here but I consider myself a meat hunter #1 goal for me is putting Venison in the freezer & on the table I don't care about points, Boone & crocket, Pope & young, age I determine what I will take from hunt to hunt personally I draw the line on spots & milk moustaches I do use every bit of the deer I can Liver is one I give away per pound venison is expensive (gear licenses ect...) we all have different ways of hunting & different goals I put no hunter down for the way they hunt as long as legal means were taken what they do with the animal afterwards is their business whether I like it or agree with it Ethics are at the top of my list but we have to face the fact that not all people are ethical

Take the stand and leave a note on the tree with your phone number. Tell them to call you to come and get it. That way, you know who it is and can explain things to them directly.

We're all hunters plain and simple. You can sprinkle whatever you want on it. It's still hunting.

After 9 seasons in the stand I finally got my first Buck after he tried to foolishly chase a doe. Got a nice 35 yard shot. Didn't travel more than 60 yards walking and pausing for a few seconds each time until he bedded down and expired. well hate to say this I have the best excuse yet I am 110# soaking wet I drive a Pontiac Grand Prix I shoot the little ones because I can drag them easier, they will fit in my Trunk & they taste the best I am going to hunt what I want how i want Legally & nobody is going to tell me different this thread is getting old funny but old so my sign on this thread is GONE HUNTING

Well, put me in the 10% then I guess. I would really prefer to NOT kill a buck and take does. If I could trade my buck license for another doe tag, I'd do it in a heartbeat. Much better taste IMO. If you want does culled out but you're only a horny hunter - give a shout - I'll take out the baldies if you've got the tags! As for people who let the meat rot/go to waste; they should be hung by their heals and fed Ex-lax! (think about that... ) There are PLENTY of people out of work who would LOVE to have that to feed their families! Don't know anyone like that? You're lucky! But there are plenty of programs that will take donated meat, Feed The Hungry comes to mind. You want to shoot animals and just let 'em go to waste, take up yote hunting. No excuse for landowners either! Have a deer problem? Have N tags? I guarantee if you put the word out there will be more guys at your door begging for the tags then you could count and who will USE the animal vs wasting it. Alaska has the right idea regarding the wasting of game meat.

i guess i am a meat hunter . i eat whatever i get . sometimes i dont get anything but i am lucky to have a brother-in-law and sister that always seam to get a deer . i love to just be out there in the woods . i remeber one day it was raining and i came over the top of a knoll and there stood a big buck ,i got him in my scope and all i could do was watch him .to see him shake every little drop of water off himself was awesome .it was like slow motion . i put my gun down and watched him . i think he was the one i was suppose to have on my wall but i let him walk away . i have never seen another that big . i dont think i ever will. but what i do get i eat . sorry i went off course lol . that happens with me lol. yes i am a meat hunter.

I hunt because I enjoy the outdoors, the sport, and the table fare it provides. What I harvest is no ones business, I don't brag about the bucks I shoot and I've been very blessed with what hunting has provided me over the 30 years in the game. I will go out of my way to congratulate any other ethical hunter on a legally killed animal. I was brought up not to judge others' decisions (in life or sport) and my other hunter friends know that. With that said they will never judge what I decide to harvest. Yes, I fill my freezer every year with a fine animal. It's my choice if I decide to let a young deer pass buck or doe and it's my family that will be eating the animal not the person who is passing judgement in what I harvested. At the end of the day just do it the way you feel is right, ethical and legal.

No worries my man. I have no problems with what you say...just pointing out the obvious ridiculousness of this thread classifying hunters, which really doesn't do anything for us in a positive light. You hunt, I hunt, that is all that really matters.

This thread is deplorable...bunch of whiners on all fronts. Usually this is a thread for August before the season starts, not when everyone is supposed to be out ACTUALLY hunting...

I am a hunter. If deer did not have meat on them I would not hunt them. I guess that would make me a meat hunter. I was raised to use every game animal/fish the best you can. As in you do not leave it laying in the woods! As others have posted their are many people out there on tough times that would certainly take a tagged deer to feed their families. Someone who does not do all they can to make that happen and leave it to rot well it may be legal but not someone I would want to associate with. Just because it is legal does not make it right. I also do not shoot the biggest doe out of a bunch. Did that once and I believe shooting the matriarch doe can screw up future deer patterns for a long time. I could also cook a 2.5 year old doe and a 2.5 year old buck tenderloin on the grill with minimal spices and such and I would bet no one could tell the difference in them. Now I have had .5 year olds, hey shit happens! And that is the best piece of meat walking around out there! Myself at this stage of my hunting career all fawns and 1.5 year old bucks get a pass. And maybe some 2.5s as well. That is my choice I have been through the get your first stage and the get a lot of anything stage. I have done both and enjoyed the heck out of it as anyone else should. I will say if I have no meat in the freezer and it is the last week 1.5 years old will get shot! Horns and tags eat like shit. Generalities just get you in trouble. I would not say a 1.5 year old buck is any dumber than a 12 point 5.5 year old buck following a hot doe! I like a big buck as much as the next guy but not my top goal. All this deer size, gender, age and success also is relative to where you hunt, how much you hunt and what your goals are. Everyone has their own situations and goals.

A little more than 100,000 bucks are killed by over 600,000 hunters every year. That is less than a 20% success rate. So 90% of the the hunters that have a few years in the field are running around not able to properly clean their nose.

Your putting deer on a pedestal. What would you do with a fox or coyote that you shot that didn't want to mount? A coyote is a lot tougher to kill than a whitetail deer. If somebody wants to leave deer in the woods, that's their choice. I don't do that, but its not my place to judge. I left squirrels in the woods that I shot with a pellet gun as a kid. I'm not sure if you are missing this point, but squirrels are very much edible. I have shot nuisance squirrel before (legally, in season) and we ate them. They were fantastic. We ate all the meat... The chickens got the offal and the crows got the rest. Not a speck wasted.

Leasing should be more than just a handshake and an exchange of money......make sure it's spelled out on paper. This may turn some landowners off, but it should be done. If you want exclusivity to the property for everything during the season, get it in writing.

This is not an accusation or judgement of up hill shooters- Lets also not forget the "know your target AND BEYOND" rule with up hill shots - was she on the top of a peak and you were below? Impossible to know what's on the other side of the mountain if she jumps the string or the shot is missed high if our physics are wrong(I know mine would be) - be safe first. I hunt because of the following: 1)relaxation and stress relief 2)fill the freezer with healthy organic meat 3) challenge myself to get one nice size buck

This must mean that I am a meat hunter then. Because up till last year it didn't matter if it was a spike or an 8 point buck it was shot and cut up and put in my freezer. That also went for does also. The recent change in my area of 40 (Delaware county) of an antler restriction of 3 point on 1 side put a damper on what bucks I am allowed to shoot. Luckily my father in law owns land in Otsego county so I can still try to fill my freezers. I bow hunt,rifle hunt and muzzleloader hunt and it is NOT brown is down thinking of hunting. A doe with this year's fawns I will let walk because I want her to get those fawns thru the winter so will be more deer next season. A lone doe I'll shoot. Every animal I shoot doesn't go to waste. Not with a family of 4 kids and 2 adults. I raise 2 hogs every summer and a beef cow/steer. Have 3 freezer to fill, and 1 is just for deer and small game ( turkey, rabbit, grouse, pheasant and fish ). We grow a garden and can and freeze what comes out of it and make jellies and jams from berries we pick. Some people might calls backwoods or hillbilly, If I am so be it, but I was raised that way and am sure some of you were raised the same way. Guess I am saying that there is not a thing wrong being a true meat hunter if you are going to use it.

My first traditional archery deer harvest...15 yard shot, beautiful double lung hit. I was using a 50 lb bear grizzly and muzzy phantom bh. I Couldn't be happier!!

I went hunting with a buddy last Sun. to some state land I found and he and I had checked out a few months ago.Never hunted there before Sun.I found a nice patch of pines mixed with hardwoods and lots of branches to hide me near a cornfield.I climbed a pine with my climber and was really happy about the spot I had found.About 4:30 I saw a doe and 2 younger deer heading towards the corn about 75 yds. out.Hmm,maybe next time I should move over there I thought. At about 5:45 I looked over my right shoulder behind me and saw a deer on the trail only about 30 -40 yds from me.It was browsing on the leaves and when it moved I saw it had antlers.I tried to turn 180 degrees but I wouldn't have been able to draw my bow and the buck was now walking toward me.I froze and watched to both my dissapointment and amusement as the buck walked through the brush and right to the tree I was in and started eating more green leaves and possibly smelling the tree I was in.Boy was I glad I didn't drop my pull rope back to the ground like I usually do ! I literally could have spit on him.He stayed there for several minutes and I hoped he wouldn't smell the pepper venison sticks I had eaten on the ride there.Finally things went my way and fatty basket buck started walking to my left still oblivious that I was about 12 feet above him.I started to raise my bow,bumped it on the armrest (oops) and when he was at about 5 yds. I got the right pin on him and heard a voice in my head say "aim low".I pulled the release,heard a loud "whack" and watched the buck jump and take off running in an arc through the woods.The sound of breaking sticks and branches sounded like a heard of cattle going through.I found half the arrow with the 100 grain fixed broadhead attached covered in blood 10 yds. from where I shot the buck.The blood trail was not good so with the wet leaves I decided to walk slowly and see if I could see him.About 50 yds. from my stand I saw a white belly and cautiously approached with an arrow nocked.He was dead with the fletching half of the arrow inside his ribcage.The arrow went in behind the shoulder,broke a rib and exited in front of the opposite shoulder/low neck.Lots of internal bleeding.This was only my second buck ever taken with a bow and the first with my new Bear bow, I will remember it for a long time and so will my buddy because he helped me drag it back to his truck in the dark.I love bowhunting .

My son hunted my stand on Sunday morning and shot at a nice 8 pointer at 7:30. He took a 43 yard shot, knew he hit it, and it took off up the hill and to really thick stuff. He waited an hour and headed over but found no blood. He followed where the deer headed, found the arrow, covered in a clear liquid and some other stuff on it. He put the arrow in the ground looked up the trail and still no blood. He came home and looked up "Gut shot deer" and other material on the subject and they all said let it sit for 8 to 12 hours. Instead, he called find deer search, who said they'd try to send somebody and he'd call back. He came down around 2:00 and they found the original spot where he'd shot, hit the arrow on the trail, and the dog kept going up the hill. Within minutes, the dog started pawing at some high grass area, and sure enough, the deer bedding back in there, and was dead. No blood at all. It turned out it was a great heart shot, but closed up right away, even where bedding down. Thanks to deer search, and an interesting thing he said is that he called them right away without disturbing the area. Too many times, hunters go in, disrupt the whole area and make it hard to find a good scent trail. Anyway, the buck may still be alive if I were in the stand instead cause I won't take a 40 yard shot. I may have to practice a lot more at 40 and 50 yards to even think about it. Hopefully, he left me a nicer deer, but it's still a long season to go. We'll see!!

i had 2 deer in the freezer, i gave some to family since they love it and kept a good amount. my dog ate about 30lbs of it this year because she loves it and its extremely good for her. im a good sharer... i had her on a venison and sweet potato diet. i dont think killing a deer for yote bait is cool at all nor legal. it was biz who said it but im sure it was a sly comment....

Shot this guy opening day of PA season, 10/5, under same tree I missed last yr. Sweet redemption!! 30 yds double lung and watched him fall!! Now trophy hunting in NY - 9H.
