  1. Did rifle for 3 days in the ADK 5 days total, one of my shortest trips. Rest of the season is bow for me, I have until January and they might extend the season on LI, waiting to see if that gets implemented this season or the following year in 2018. Hope to find one I like and have a good shot! Last one was 60 yards directly in the morning sun on top of a hill. A picture burned in my mind that I will never forget! Looked like a scene from Deer and Deer Hunting or something you would see on the cover of Field and Stream! That image alone will keep me going this year and he is not the big boy!
  2. Cool shots. Looks like the turkey like the area, possible roosting location. Funny to me how the deer and turkey hang out together. Good ears and good eyes make them a perfect companions.
  3. We had a big guy in the area supposedly a 12 point but I never found his tracks. One of our new guys took a 4 pt his second buck and his first ADK buck. Good time but I had a few issues that needed to be addressed and thankfully will be ok next year.
  4. We have until Dec 30th to comment on this area, please take the time to encourage our representatives to allow hunting and general public assess to this area! Thanks for any help, a simple e-mail will help requesting this area is designated a wild forest vs forever wild. Thanks again and thanks to Raymerlo for posting this information!!!
  5. I have seen gut shot deer go for water and wounded deer go up high. Will they do it every time? No Will a wounded animal seek safety, yes and often for bucks this can be a high vantage point. I think some of these myths have some merit to them but simply put any wounded animal will try and get away from the threat, depending on the wound and where they are can determine what they might do.
  6. Thanks!!! I have seen the first book, always love going over the history! Love reading about the past hunters and what it was like. Time to expand the library.
  7. Very nice buck Buckmaster7600! Congrats! Amazing story! That drag sounds like it was a workout!!! Again congrats on another ADK buck, nothing like getting one of them! They are in a class by themselves!
  8. Welcome aboard! Great to have you!
  9. Second rut is just getting started! Still after the brute in one location we hunt and thinking about taking one of the high 130's we have. Looking for the one who beat up this tree in another location, poor trees someone has to defend them!
  10. You two need to get a grip on reality, nothing at all funny about loosing a member of our hunting community especially when it happens this way. Shame on you both!!!
  11. Stubby68 So from what you stated the more deer we shoot the more deer we will see? (Just like the old days.) And if you pass deer and become selective on what you shoot causing less deer to be shot you will have less deer? And I live in a cesspool? I guess I am done talking to you Stubby68, I thought we could have a normal conversation but based on your logic and the fact that you need to demoralize someone to make you feel better makes me believe you have some issue apparently more than just not knowing about deer biology and herd management.
  12. Happy B-Day!!! Hope your in the woods!
  13. I have studied whitetails for 29 years and went overboard from 2000-2013. You have a vast amount of knowledge to gain Stubby68. Good luck I am done with this post.
  14. I do not use them that often, my buddy uses them all the time. They do work but it would not affect me if it was banned.
  15. Hard to tell could just be the fur pushed up.
  16. Delusional keeps coming up and I have to agree. You need to study biology and deer mating much more to understand what is going on and apparently you have not done this but want to go with what you see on your small plot of land and state this as fact. Simply put if they stopped buck hunting for 5 years I would have 5 years of no hunting in NY. Your logic is flawed Stubby, read some more books and you might understand. Trophy hunters have some of the best hunting grounds I have ever been on. The guys who shoot anything that is not a yearling have some of the worst populations I have ever hunted. Nothing to do with big bucks but population in general.
  17. 4 months is a lot of hunting! I tend to take a brake after that!
  18. LOL!!! 2 funny! One to add: A dog will never say : I love you but I am not in love with you. Now I know why I want a dog more than a girlfriend.
  19. Passed 2 doe today (Mom and fawn), your choice! Do what you want with your tags! If it is your land and deer population is low she would be worth keeping. Want more food then take her.
  20. And moments like this are what it is really all about!!! Awesome Rob!!!
  21. Stubby68 Wrote: " Then how do you explain being able to see more deer years ago then now? How about the fact that good bucks were common back then? Like I said back then good bucks were seen and shot every day. They never ended up being the talk of the hunting town. Hunters didn't get giddy as a school girl about seeing a good buck like they do today. Why ? There were a lot of them. Never heard a hunter say they didn't see any deer on an outing either. How many posts have there been on this site alone from hunters saying they saw nothing? Back then we shot what ever never passing buck or doe to wait for a bigger one. Any passing on a shot was do to us deciding we didn't feel like dragging that day and we new we could get them when we did feel it. Up until the mind set of trophy hunting we shot what ever when ever. Never having a problem of getting good bucks and doe every day and year. " NFA-ADK Wrote: I can not say why your area sees less deer now, could be new neighbors that shoot anything, larger hunting population causing more deer to be taken, poachers, road and winter kills. I am not sure where you hunt but many factors can contribute to low population and poor age structure. If you really think that trophy hunting is the problem I just think you are looking in the wrong direction. Trophy hunters are very specific on what they shoot so many 2 year old deer get a pass. Take the opposite approach and bad things can happen and ruin an area quickly, like having your 10 buddies come up to you house and take 7 bucks and 9 doe or having 2-3 neighbors do the same more than once a year! This I have seen first hand how bad an area can become when to many deer are taken, especially doe, if you kill to many you will have very few new deer to hunt! No big deal if the population can handle that many deer taken and sometimes in certain high population area's this is a good thing providing more food for those that survive. Have this type of scenario happen more than one time in a year and with multiple properties and you will see an adverse affect on your population! Ask yourself this question: What have I done to improve my area for deer? Stop hunting on my land for a year or 2, many laugh when I bring this up! Hunt it less or limit the hunting presser you put on the land. Limit your land to buck only with a 8 pt or better minimum? Plant food for the harsher months? Provide sanctuary that you stay out of year round? Clear cut for natural browse, set up bedding area? Again not sure of your area, how much property you have access to or how you hunt the land and how many others are on your land hunting it or any improvements made to help with the problems. I am willing to bet you are close to NYC these area's tend to get a lot of presser from hunters. Close I mean within 2 hours.
  22. These are both young deer, both would get a pass by me, and if I could recognize them next year they would get a pass. Nothing wrong with shooting them if you want to but they are both off limits to me. Could be yearlings, look slightly larger in other pics. The one in front looks like a yearling to me but all 3 could be yearlings.
  23. Nice, congrats!!! Any pics?
