any one else excited about snow opening day of firearms as I
NYBowhunter replied to rob-c's topic in General Chit Chat
Not too long ago, think 2 years ago we got dumped with almost 2 feet of snow over the course of opening day and couple days after. That was ruff walking, but was nice to hunt in. Looking fwd to some white stuff, great to see tracks and deer stand out more. -
So sorry for your loss, you and your family will be in my prayers.

I will be using my dads marlin 336 in 35 caliber

I typically dont get jacked up until after the shot. What has worked for me over the years is in the off season just go drive around and glass at as many deer as you can, this gets you use to seeing deer. As your watching deer just try to keep your breathing steady and try not to get excited. All of this will then eventually roll over into hunting season, where you will find yourself much more relaxed leading up to the shot and at point of release. And it also helps when you have killed a ton of deer...lol... With time you learn to control the excitement. The more you glass or are around deer in the field the more comfortable you will feel when you see them in a huntable situation.

A big what? I nominate you for the worst picture ever...lol

I use a marlin 336 in 35 caliber and love it. Its over 50 years old (my dads) and is a gem, flat out knocks deer down in a hurry, short barrel, compact, lite and very easy to handle. Because of short barrell its very maneuverable in a treestand or blind. When climbing up my mountain, i strap it to my back pack and dont even know its there.

Actually i dont hunt the plots very much at all, but i will go to them if i need to fill the freezer with a doe or 2. Plots are not a slam dunk as most suspect, not easy seeing a mature buck during daylight hours in my plots. And to answer your question i sure do work my ass off to kill deer, just poke around and you will find out. To you as well, good luck and get a big one.
-
My conscience tells me when i break my ass to put in a food plot that benefits all wildlife (not just deer) and feeds them throughout the entire year thats the right thing to do. Trust me when i tell you that anybody that does land mgt.and also puts in foorplots and maintains those food plots that the wildlife reap way more benefits then the couple deer i kill each year. My conscience tells me that dumping a bag of corn in a pile just to harvest deer and that has no long lasting sustainable value to deer or wildlife is not ethical. I guess we think differently and i clearly see no correlation between baiting vs. Food plots/land mgt. And for the record i dont give a rats ass either what the guy next door to me does, its never diminished my ability to kill deer.

We do, but not raw and not scraps either, we feed our pup on most days cooked venison mixed in with his dry dog food . He devours it.

Have had iphones many years ago, switched over to samsung and never looked back. I feel the samsung phones are just more easier to operate and user friendly. I just picked up the galaxy note 9, love it, so many usable features.

I drive stakes into the ground then anchor that to the stand using several ratchet straps.

Same here most my ladders, tripods, box blinds are 10 -16'. I have one homemade stand thats about 16' up in a tree but because it sits at the edge of a ditch its height is probably more like 22- 23'. Theres really no need that i can think of to be 30-40' up in a tree.
-
In all my years hunting there has be absolutely no need to go above 16". But thats me.
-
Good lord who the hell would go 30' up in a tree to kill a deer? Thats insane, all my treestands are approx. 10" to 18' max.

Looks like entry may have missed or clipped top of one lung, that exit looks like a heart shot especially with that forward down angle. Like i noted earlier, they can run far even with a centerpunch heart shot. Sometimes you have to take membrane off heart and wipe away blood to see the shot.
-
I took 2 does so far, both from a treestand, both were complete pass thrus, both were center punch heart shots. One went a little over 75 yards and other about 100 yards. Their will to survive is extraordinary, once they are hit it takes literally seconds for them to go 100 yards. Even perfect hits may require persistence on your part. If i didnt hear the arrow crush thru bone, ribcage and them running with front legs low you would think they were never hit. Even after many , many years of hunting i still shake my head in amazement. I have complete respect for these animals.

Doe for the freezer, another heart shot, went about 100 yards. Those slicks tricks are lethal, always a pass thru with those heads. Gonna fill the freezer fast with these big does.
