How often do you clean your guns?

Grampa got me started shooting when I was about 12 years old. He told me I could never 'over-clean' a rifle or shotgun. Then when I was on the base rifle team in the service, that teaching was reinforced. Consequently like Daveboone I clean 'em after every shooting and periodically throughout the year. Oh, and I only have 1 rifle, muzzleloader, and pistol. Why you might ask? "Beware of the man with only one gun... for he knows how to shoot it." -

I do this (and you're right... the crud that comes out is nasty) but I've often wondered if this is a good practice. Years ago I never did this and my strings seemed to last forever. Now it seems that after doing this every month or so my string frays more and more and I get a little worried that I've torn some inner fibers. So - I find myself replacing my string much more often because of my nervousness. Just my opinion...

Southern Tier of NY... (Horseheads area). I was on laptop reading papers from my students when the whole house started creaking - thought my wife was pushing on the back of my chair. She actually was outdoors cleaning out the camper - she thought I was rocking the camper trying to scare her. The street came alive with neighbors running out of their houses wondering, "What just happened?"
