  1. that's awesome, I never shot one with a bow from the ground. thats gotta be exciting!
  2. maybe get a climber for this year and start where the previous owner suggested, then trial and error from there. trail cams too if you can. then next year you'll have a better idea of how deer use the land and could pick better spots for more permanent stands
  3. I always thought snow was an advantage, easily see fresh tracks, blood trails that can't be missed, and it makes dragging them out a heck of a lot easier
  4. 165 dressed, 1st and only deer I ever shot with a gun...so far
  5. no mask, no face paint, not hat, except when it's cold then a winter hat. the few times I've been busted in a treestand it's been because of movement or bad wind. sitting on the ground for spring turkeys I use face paint
  6. extra release, that's a good idea! a couple of times I have forgotten my release in the truck and had to go back for it
  7. awesome man, great story!!! I'm so jealous. that's a dream hunt for me too! how much did that set you back??
  8. sunrise/sunset it's plenty light enough a half hour before sunrise to make a clear shot and know exactly what your shooting at. sunset is arguable especially during bow season when you should give deer some time before tracking. 1/2 hour before sunrise definitely. 1/2 hour after sunset maybe just for gun season
  9. I always try to shoot standing up. mostly because it's next to impossible to shoot to your right if your sitting, assuming your right handed.
  10. I like to set up near acorns for early bow season. check those wooded areas for oak trees early on then switch to a stand on the field edge maybe mid to late October.
  11. been seeing some poults on my trail cam, actually more than the last 2 years combined
  12. can't tell if this is a really big fawn or maybe a piebald. Thoughts??? I don't think this is the same one, this looks like a normal sized fawn for this time of year to me Troy/Brunswick area in Rensselaer county
  13. probably wouldn't shoot them in a residential backyard like that but if I was in the treestand and they were both in season id probably try to bring both of them home in the back of my truck. the screaming deer is pretty tough to listen to though
  14. I start by using the butt out, works great. then start at the sternum and use a knife with a gut hook. I like to split the sternum with an old knife I don't care about and hammer the back of it with a nearby stick, if I'm not mounting it of course. my girlfriend bought me the Viking deer splitter for xmas so I'm gonna try that out
  15. that plaque is really cool. might do something similar with my next buck. thanks for the link
  16. little bit of opening day luck for me
  17. I've been out 7 times already and have only heard gobbling from the roost. once they fly down, it's been silent. been seeing hens but none of them have made a peep or had boys with them. saw 2 jakes strutting on the 3rd and no bearded birds since, except for in the roost. tried to get close to them before fly down and they were gobbling their heads of but they flew down to the neighbor's field on the other side of the creek and had no interest in my calling. definitely my most frustrating season yet.
  18. new reflex sights just got sighted in, box calls are chalked up, vest is loaded up and hanging. just gotta wash up my spring camo although the way the weather's been I might be wearing my deer hunting gear!
