WI Tall Tine Tubers plot 3 weeks in
LET EM GROW replied to UpStateRedNeck's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
I wouldn't worry about it, looks good. but the best way to sread seed is to use a hand spreader and spread i ton the light side, so you can go over it twice. This helps from putting too much seeds in one area at a time. and also gives better coverage.. spread it one way then the second way go 90 degrees to the first passes.. cheap 20$ red bag seeder works great -
Small Kill Plot Advice
LET EM GROW replied to UpStateRedNeck's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
If you can put up a small seclusion cage so you can watch browse pressure.. I think you'll be amazed! add a clover if you'd like to make it a clover plot for next year.. highly recommend, then you can terminate that if you want another fall plot -
It should work in October when the rut nears and bucks are showing dominance.. I've Never Had good luck at luring in mature bucks.. If it were me, Id find a better setup near your yellow line if your sure they travel that path routinely .. Make sure wind is in your favor and you can enter and exit without being detected.. OR you wait for the absolute perfect day to go in and slam dunk one.. not worry about disturbing the area afterwards.. If no tres are available, Id try a ground blind setup either a natural build or brushed in ground blind.. If you do use the decoy point the bucks nose in the direction you anticipate a shot.. as if a buck nears for a fight or stare down, it should do so in front of the decoy somewhere..

Deer movement advice on a large clear cut
LET EM GROW replied to left field's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
Late to the parrty but i would if possible place these trees like you build a wall, and create pinch points the deer have to go through if they wanna get to the "other side" .. If its a good spot where the wind may be in their favor, and they have good access routes, and location is good.. it could turn into some bedding cover.. deer love side cover when bedding. You can always cut let it be for a few weeks and check to see how the deer are using it.. then make a plan.. but if moving brush, I would try to use it to funnel wildlife to where you want them to be.. a brush pile here and there is great for bunnies and small game.. -
My garden was killed by the drought, and sun rays on our dark black soil.. I couldn't give it enough water.. even made a weed/moisture mat with dead plants to protect the soil.. Sun killed everything.. soil was bone dry even 10inches deep.. But after a couple good rains, and cooler temps, tomato plants and corn are coming back slowly.. Replanted my daughters cherry tomatoes and 4 zucchini plants .. that will be our garden for the year.. beside some snap peas that are doing well..

Multipurpose food plot
LET EM GROW replied to suburbanfarmer's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
You can still plant beans, its actually a really good idea to plant them with a brassica blend and grains.. You cannot beat green beans for early bowhunting.. You just wont get pods for winter. I planted beans with brasicas, small grains and clovers the last 2 years.. Its a good cafeteria mix .. they will die with a good frost but in the right location and right setup.. you can reap great rewards hunting over green beans.. -
Me neither.. Waters deep, and cold.. sounds familiar lol

Small Kill Plot Advice
LET EM GROW replied to UpStateRedNeck's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
If your looking to make this plot orefferred in October.. I would add some Rye, wheat or oats around the first of September. Or mix in an annual clover with your Augist 1st planting. Just to add to the buffet. Small early season kill plots are usually best with legumes like green soybeans, clovers or grains.. In my experience anyways. Just trying to make the best out of what your desired goal is here.. Here to help you if you ever need. Best of luck and keep us up to date! -

You can use annual clovers, winter Peas and Rye for best results. Or just keep it mowed down around the 6-8in mark and hang a mock scrape with a hemp rope over it.. it will bring every deer to the exact spot everytime. -

Had some extra seed in the basement, And the land owner couldn't tend this corner after the farmer planted it without driving through my yard.. told me to do what i wanted with it and keep the weeds down and not look messy... So i let the boy go out and rip around so we can spread some seeds and watch deer from the back deck.. Its amazing what this black muck soil can do.. It is was bone dry, so dry that it actually killed the entire farmers field of corn.. which has now begun to regrow since we had a couple rains.. but it was dead brown.. Must be the color of the soil drew more heat than other fields, since none others were affected like this.. This black muck soil even though super dry still sucked in the quad to the point where he got stuck several times! super dry dirt and the machine bottomed out on the frame.. it was weird lol. Anywho.. We spread a bag of white and red milo down as well as Ladino clover , Med. red clover, Balansa Clover and Chicory. There is a ton of weed seed in this soil more than i've ever seen anywhere else.. we got rain a few hours later and a few times since planting.. Just hope the seeds can take off.. Either way its still better than letting the seed sit.. Teaching him how to plant so he can start doing plots for me.. My special needs son keeps me busy 24 7 basically.. lol Hopefully we can watch some deer, and id imagine he will want a ground blind here as well, maybe my wife will too.. time will tell

Wont hurt the seed, IF it germs, then dries out, it can kill the plant. But I learned this year as the farmers field out behind my house was planted corn first time ever, Black much soil dries out fast compared to any brown colored soil.. The entire field of ft tall corn turned brown and died 2 weeks ago. Some quick heavy rains this week and the corn has since started growing new growth out of the center of the stalk. Seems Corn is a real survivor / fighter.. Most other species wont grow back though after a germination followed by drought..

What do you really need?
LET EM GROW replied to G-Man's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
I would never turn a golden rod field into a food plot.. loss of a lot of different food species and a ton of warm and cool season cover .. Maybe taking the edges or the center and carving out a plot would be a beteer idea, but leaving alot of the fallow field alone.. Id rather have a fallow field over a food plot anyday of the week.. -
Sounds good, I would add some annual clovers like balansa or crimson to your blend, and radish as you mentioned. I would also shy away from tilling or disking your plot after your initial planting. Unless you plan to pick rocks, If you can incorporate the right seed blends into your plantings, then a rain and a lawn roller will sow your seeds for you so you dont have to dig rocks. It will also aid in soil health since each time soil is disrupted its nutrients get depleted by the sun, the wind and lack of worms and such. If you have to scratch soil, I highly recommend only a light scratching, no bottom plowing or beating the heck out of the soil, especially if you have a soil building plan.. When do you plan on planting?
