Agreed, When acorns are dropping thats where youll find deer .. consuming them while they can. In between feedings theyll hit a food plot no doubt. The nice thing about the many different species of food in nature are that many are palatable/preferred at different times. Once the acorns are gone. they will be on to the next best option they have to feed on.. being your food plot(species depending) or farmers field or dropping soft mast, what ever is available. For food plots Clovers work awesome right up until cold weather. Brassicas work great for early fall through winter. Some Cereal grains are great fall winter attraction as well. Mow/Weedwhack your standing vegetation down, Kill it as suggested above once its green and growing again, then spread your seed right before a good rain. These 3 seeds mentioned will germinate no problem with a good rain immediately following planting and no soil prep.. Pic for example is a brassica plot i planted 2 years ago.. mowed vegetation down, sprayed it with gly/roundup once it started actively growing again .. spread seed and rolled it with lawn roller.. pic is 4 weeks after planting..

New stock - ugly or nice?
LET EM GROW replied to Steuben Jerry's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
Great choice in color. I love that coyote color! As for the stock, to me it takes some growing on to get used to it. At first glance i dont care for it, but the more i look at it i like it a tad better each time lol -
perfect timing for bow. I have some wood lots that need thinning. should work great for the edges.

Good way to hide bird #3 TF!! lol

Not yet, after some more tree / chainsaw work, I would like to incorporate a few of these. what time of year are they beneficial to deer?

Glysophate Questions
LET EM GROW replied to NYBuckHunter27's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
Only kills when in contact with green actively growing plants. Wait a week or 2 and then spray. -
Shoot if it makes you happy! that should be everyone's goal. I usually target the 3.5-4.5yr old bucks and older. but more often than not, a good buck that is showing a pattern and seems more hunt able than the rest, will reach the top of the hitlist faster.

I have been reading a lot on the sierra match bullets. I will definitely have to try these out. I want to stay away from plastic tips, I really dont want them to explode in case I find the shoulder on a bigger doggy. I greatly appreciate it. I was given several boxes with the gun, as i shoot those up, i will pick these bullets up and get with a buddy who has a die and try to get some made up. Thanks Al, Bryan

Few questions on food plots
LET EM GROW replied to land 1's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
totally agree g man. I remember seeing purple and yellows in my brassicas the first couple years. Since then, i rarely see a non green brassica plant. -
I mix about 32oz per acre. and with my rig, that equals out to just under 15 gallons. and i have a successful kill each time as long as i make my passes accordingly lol. I get mine fom Runnings GLY-STAR 41% its usually $15-$19/gallon. Im going to start mixing in 2,4-d as well with a surfactant. Just in case, my brother messed with the calibration of my rig this year and i wasnt aware of it, kind of upset me just slightly... Since the last time i left a couple green lines, i now turned down the pressure, and hit it twice lightly so i dont miss any spots. going 90* to the first passes.

Thanks Rac! This is 1:10" twist. I did hear the tighter the twist the heavier bullets stabilize better also.. Going to start with 55 gr. Really dont want to shoot much less than that, if anything go a tad heavier for the windier sets.

Few questions on food plots
LET EM GROW replied to land 1's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
I just saw this picture the other day. Thought it was very interesting. I dont have enough acreage for corn, nor the money to invest in feeding growing corn etc. I wish i did, cause ive seen what it can do in winter months. I normally dont hunt my food plots much either, unless a buck shows a pattern or what not. but try to catch them in between. Unless we have the perfect access routes setup its hard to get in and out of plots undetected most times. And the last thing we want is deer, especially mature ones, picking us off coming to or going from our stand -
Few questions on food plots
LET EM GROW replied to land 1's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
I tried getting my bulbs to get big back in the day.. And i could hardly ever get them much bigger than softballs. But the earliest i ever planted was late July, and i do not use fertilizer often. Just rotate crops, and let different seed species feed one another. Last year mine, as well as my neighbors brassicas were all wiped out by November. thats many acres of bulbs lol. Never sene it before. We both planted late July, but had dry conditions. Hope they dont wipe them out early season again. -
I'm sorry, This item has been sold.

Few questions on food plots
LET EM GROW replied to land 1's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
WNY stated it perfect, eat it for yourself. I do that with everything i plant. lol. They prefer smaller more palatable ones over the bigger woody bulbs/tubers. But they eat whats available. I'm sure they will eat them regardless of size during harsh winter months. In reality, they are eating woody browse as a main food source then anyways. But when it comes time to compete with neighbors, i highly suggest keeping them on the smaller baseball type size. Even with the bigger ones in my experience also, they'll only eat the op half of them anyways. But plant when you can and when mother nature allows optimum conditions. -
Nice rig!!

Few questions on food plots
LET EM GROW replied to land 1's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
I dont think it bothers a deer so much in the middle of winter when food is scarce, but if i was competing with neighbors I would try not to plant much earlier than need to. As bulbs grow bigger they become less palatable, vs younger baseball sized bulbs. Again, in the middle of winter and with no other bulb plots around you probably dont have an issue. On my end, I compete with many neighbors who plant bulb/winter plots as well. I try to keep my bulb planting dates around the 1st of August in Central Steuben county. I seeded mine Friday 7/20 this year because i wont have the time around the first of the month. They were also calling for rain this weekend and I wanted to make sure i had bulbs with an earlier planting vs the chance of no bulbs with a later planting. My winter plots this year are PTT, GHR, Rutabaga and Kale. Most Turnips need around 60 days to mature. some more, some less. But having to be planted in middle of summer when most places are dry. If you are within the end July Early august time frame when rain is near... plant on. Rain is more important than timing sometimes -
I sprayed them with glyphosate, to control grass and weeds growing up from under the beans. They are round up ready beans.

Henry .22 Fireman’s commemorative
LET EM GROW replied to Nomad's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
A little late to join, but Congrats sir! Well deserved. I said the same thing about a 24k gold 4570 Henry I won. But what good is a gun if you dont use it. So I had to at least shoot it and dial in. On the most beautiful of days of course lol -
TF upgraded from that Golden Eagle Brave bow? What'd he get? lol
-
Sprayed all the beans last night. I always hit them later than i wanted too. Should have done it a couple weeks ago. They get too tall and not being planted in rows, the wheeler tires snap some stems. Hand sprayed the beans inside the fence. Tonight will broadcast a big bulb blend into them. A little earlier than normal for me but im booked for a long while out not. packing and moving in to our new home. Its so tempting to pull this fence down and let the deer in to feed, but this plot needs to be saved for late season only. They can have the other 2.

How About Some Rain
LET EM GROW replied to landtracdeerhunter's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
That is crazy. Here in central Steuben, according to my farmlogs account. My fields are 36% drier than average. That is after the .6" of rain we received monday or whichever day it was. I know a friends property in Wayne County is over 40% drier than average. I would imagine you are as bad or worse off than that. Hope the forecast for next week holds true, possible storms everyday almost. -
In areas with a lot of fawn action, i really like putting my camera son video instead of picture setting. It makes for some very interesting footage lol
