  1. Cool display! that is really neat. I know where I'd be hanging out if i were there. Deer do grow differently in different areas no doubt, soil and genetic depending. Im no biologist, but I have archives of pics of bucks we have/had history with over the years. Some are pretty simple to age, some are a bit more difficult to age. But without "history" I think ages can be slightly off, especially in non AG, more rocky, poor soiled areas. Ive even spoke with Matt Ross about a couple, and they had him on a limb as well. Even when I know basically the exact age of the deer, a "Biologist of Whitetail Aging" or one who believes they are... will tell you different. I have 2 bucks this year that i know for a fact are 9.5 yrs old, I would love to see those jaw bone. Maybe I should start trying to gather jaw bones from bucks taken and start documenting. Sounds like fun actually..
  2. Ok nevermind I mentioned all that about Cleth and thistle, Cleth wont kill Thistle. LOL I got my plants all mixed up. My apologies first day back to work from vacation. That was bad... I believe roundup/gly is about all that will kill Thistle .. a little embarrassing there. I'd let it be, or just weed whack it down as low as possible. Thats that hardest part about not spraying first. In the same boat with milkweed .. forgot to spray a 2nd time in 1 plot before seeding my bulb blend ..
  3. First bow was given to me when I was 12 yrs old... A PSE Nova From there I bought my first at 14.. A PSE F2 followed by Mathews Fx Mathews Outback Mathews z7(current) Mathews MR7(Current) I kept my fathers bow after he passed, a LH Mathews Outback in Brand new condition. I plan to try and learn to shoot LH so I can use his bow for a harvest sooner than later..
  4. Its hard not to let the deer eat these while thick and lush green, but i really want late season pods. Better food source nutritionally than turnips etc.. what better way to double crop if anyway possible.
  5. CLethodim only kills grasses. Does not kill broad leaf plants like your brassicas or clovers/legumes. So if sprayed with Clethodim, your brassicas and clovers will not be harmed whatsoever(as long as your tank is properly cleaned before hand) and your thistle would die off. But cleth is illegal in NYS. Though lot of people still use it. Thistle is easy to kill, agreed. Id either let it be for the year, and get a good kill on it next May.. or spot spray it with some gly in a hand sprayer then seed it with some wheat/rye/oats etc.. to fill the plot back in. I dont like to use much for chemicals besides GLY. Also, once your clovers mature some, they can take a decent dose of GLY and survive..
  6. The thistle will hold your plants back from their full potential of its as thick as you say. I wouldn't mow it, your tires and or blades will severely stunt or kill your brassicas unless they are a grazing type. You could spray with Clethodim(illegal in NYS) to kill grasses and bot broad leaf plants... ex.. clovers(legumes)/brassicas. Unless you think your brassicas wont perform, id spray it with Cleth(illigal in NYS) but who would know lol. Or mow it in a couple weeks if your not concerned for your brassicas.
  7. 1 of my bean plots that i protected this summer, all done with a sprayer, shoulder bag spreader and a lawn roller. Overseeded bare/thin spots with bulbs. If the beans yellow soon will overseed rye or wheat.
  8. I have the same problem this year in 2 of my plots, first time in a looong time. They popped up fast, but then the rain never ended.. Grew nice but got way too wet and havent grown much since, besides in the higher spots of the plots. Hoping this weeks hot dry weather helps them out. My 3rd dryer plot they were kickin A when i checked a week and a half ago.
  9. Give it about 30-45 days youll start seeing small tubers(that dont really look like tubers yet) but as cool weather sets in they will get bigger. Radish plants grow fast. Faster than my PTT and other bulbs. But it seems tubers all grow best after the 45+ day mark
  10. Looks great man, I wouldn't be disappointed at all either, didn't realize you put your Rye in already. I am going to try and check mine today, my soil has been so damp the last few weeks, its stunted my brassica growth quite a bit. Hoping they dry out this week. We finally got moved into the new house over the weekend.
  11. Dang thats nuts lol. Not sure I've ever noticed any of mine that big. Possibly under the tops where I couldn't see.
  12. 1200-1900.. depending on which end of the hill i hunt
  13. My round trip to and from work everyday is 136 miles, (if i don't go to camp on the way home) 5-6 days a week .. I see some horrible, clueless, not right and careless people on the road every single day. And it drives me absolutely nuts!!! I've always been a cautious driver, because that is how i was taught. But since i lost my father to a careless driver.. and the fact that this states judicial system is total garbage, my feelings towards these drivers is much worse these days. Most people don't realize how dangerous a car and its driver can really be. Most don't even notice whats going on around them, or what they are potentially doing when they do these erratic things and or don't care because "they have never been effected by a careless/clueless driver.. " Between my grandfather being a defensive driver instructor, a member of the corvette club, and at watkins glenn track, as well as my dads "winter time fun" as kids, I was blessed to be taught the ins and outs of car handling. I believe everyone should have to go through these hands on courses before they are given a license .. For anyone that hasn't been in a defensive driving course where you are actually driving your own vehicle and put in harms way intentionally with an instructor on the track. it is a great experience and an eye opening event. it really is.
  14. I have the rhino liner on my bed since it was new. A 2005 ram 2500. the bed is in beautiful shape, but the steel underside is peeling rotting away. in spots the only thing keeping it in tact is the rhino liner. stuff is tough i will say! You wold never know unless you crawled underneath it. The cleats in the bed are only held on by the rhino lined currently lol. Steel is about gone. My next vehicle i will be spraying motor oil underneath. I've seen it work now and seen these commercialized products fail.
  15. Food plotting should be driven with goals each time no doubt, well said! I cant believe you've grown Volley ball sized turnips. lol That is crazy. I have a hard enough time getting them much bigger than softballs really. Must be the difference in soils.
  16. Ill be calling them in from my side of the road, with Chunks matched set sheds they should come in running! lol
  17. Im not a new vehicle owner lol, but i would base it off of how long you plan on keeping the vehicle. If you plan to keep it forever, i probably would do some type of rust proof, every year Becuase this is new york and they are still rusting, a slong as you can afford it. If your not keeping it past 5 or 6 years I wouldnt, but thats me. Let it be someone elses problem. Though it may gain some value when it comes time to trade in as well. My buddy has a sprayer that he sprays his old motor oil under his truck every fall. Just puts a good coating all over the under side. His truck is a 2001 silverado with no rust and 270,000 miles on it.
  18. Bigger the bulb the more "woodier" the taste of the bulb (less palatable) In the middle of winter it probably wont hurt anything since they are basically eating woody browse anyways. Id just rather have a thicker plot of baseball-softball size bulbs(more palatable/preferred) rather than fewer bigger (less preferred/palatable) bulbs. Maybe its just me. I prefer offering Turnip, Radish and rutabaga because they all put on bulbs and are preferred at a little different times. between the green tops and the tubers themselves. Another case bigger bulbs would be better in is trying to break up the sod/soil for a following future crop.
  19. What land said.. pack/roll it and it will gemrinate without rain.
  20. Welp, that did the trick.. Thanks GMan!! lol
  21. Sounds like a good weekend, I miss having those weekends with my father and family friends at camp.. Camps a lot different, until the kids get older. I Have not got a thing done yet. This summer has been the worse one yet for trying to get anything accomplished. Busy Busy and wife working weekends, I Think we have to cancel our OBX vacation next week so maybe ill still take a few days vacation and get some stuff done. Shes getting the itch to start shooting and settle into bow season.
  22. Good to know, I try my best to never use fertilizers. And just rotate my crops or mix seeds that benefit each other, plus use cover crops as much as possible.. but dang does it get expensive doing this on 4 or 5 plots.
  23. If your looking to get rid of some of these coyotes, my buddy and i are big into calling them during their season. HE also traps throughout the winter, if youd be looking to thin a few of these yotes out.. one way or the other.
