  1. I guess it could be off a little I never had any issues with the bolt locking up or any signs of too much chamber pressure. My buddy has a 7mm rem mag that also reloads and couldn't believe the numbers either (his chrono and was cheap). I could tame it down a bit and my brass would last a little longer. I can only usually get 2 or 3 reloads before the the neck cracks. I am using the Hornady Superformance powder with Mag primers. I don't know the exact powder amount I think it is around 49gr. Its a slower burning powder but that might be the reason why I don't show signs of too much chamber pressure. I think I tried the TTSX were better than the factory TSX but they still didn't meet my expectations. Every rifle is different and will like different bullets, powders, cartridge lengths, ect. When I first got my rifle I bought some remington cor-lokts factory ammo (cheap and have shot them in every other rifle) and they shot beautifully but they were very dirty and the MV wasn't very good after 150 yards they dropped like lead balloons.
  2. You're right, but in my instance we were seeing this buck regularly (every 2 days) in the same field at the same time (within a few minutes). I'm not saying he didn't frequent other properties but the amount we were seeing him he definitely wasn't traveling far. On the opposite nights we were seeing what looked like him (near dark and 400 yards away) in our adjacent green fields munching on cut soybean.
  3. I have shot the barnes and never had good luck with them. No matter what I used grain I could never get a good group out of them. I strive for the tightest group would a 1" group suffice yes but I am a little anal and try for that clover leaf in all my guns.
  4. My Sister-in-law has been shooting a 7mm-08 since she was 12. Father-in-law started her with the reduced recoil loads by remington and she had no problem shouldering the gun and taking a dozen shots (she wanted to keep going but ammo isn't cheap). Once she hit 14 and was able to do the youth hunt my FIL loaded the gun with regular remington loads and she dropped 2 year. She had no idea they weren't the reduced recoil when she shot the deer. He made sure they shot the same as the reduced recoil before he loaded her up with them. x2 and use the reduced recoil loads.
  5. Here is a photo of my .270 bullet after shooting my buck in the neck at 160 yards hit the spine. It was poking out of the neck but not thru the hid. This was a Nosler 130 Grain hunting bullet with a hot re-load MV is around 3500 fps. This photo is from last year high shoulder at 75 yards, first 1/4 of the bullet fragmented but the jacket stayed together and was once again same load with same bullet.
  6. Target in the gun for the distance you are going to shoot. You then won't be pissed you didn't take the time to do it when/if you miss that monster and you'll know it was all buck fever.
  7. We had one on the camera in August then shot 150 yards from the camera. It depends if the doe are there, we don't push our property, it is seldom that we even walk the perimeter during deer season to and from stands that's it. We tend to have "regulars" on the cameras and new comers during regular season. Lots of people say we need to kill doe off our property for the health of the herd and to bring in more bucks but I am happy killing 135" 10 points. The best is they don't go far (deer on our property), my neighbor also only had 1 photo of this buck but was in July and wasn't sure of the size of his rack. I think it is the same deer and is the only picture we have of him up until he was killed.
  8. My father is like that. I tend to hunt right up until I get that shooter, if it is the first weekend then I'm done. If I don't get the shooter I'll hunt right thru the last weekend and into Muzzleloader.
  9. Tikka or howa 1500. I have the tikka (howa 1500 reciever sako barrel) and is a shooter. Love this gun so much I find it hard to take any other into the woods for deer. My wife has a .243 that is light and drives tacks but I can't not take this rifle out. Its trigger is the best i have shot (including save accu-junk, remington 700 SPS and BDL, Winchester XPR?) Just buy the tikka t3 you won't have buyers remorse i promise.
  10. I generally do a gift crate filled with wine, crackers, cheese, and various venison goodies (slim jims, summer sausage, trail bologna). Still costs some money but haven't heard any complaints.
  11. They ended up killing the gator. Poor gator was doing a better job taking care of business than our legal system.
  12. Rut was next to non existent in my area we had some chasing for 2 days then it seemed like a ghost town. In 8X we have been in the low 20s almost every morning for a while now. Heavy frost almost every morning then highs in the upper 40s. I'm guessing that the lake is still warm hence your warmer temps.
  13. It looks like a gold ring scope..Leupold. Looks like it might be a vx-6 or mark 4 but I could be wrong.
  14. The wife will definitely cost a lot more in the long run....Although you could get her a vacation then its a win win for you.
  15. That is a shame. I don't like to hear about those shots. We had a close call on our property 2 years ago with my wife and another hunter. He was shooting at a running deer on the top of our hill (trespassing) shooting over the hill and the slugs from his shotgun going thru the tree tops where my wife was sitting. In the last 48 years my father has hunted our property this was the only instance but 1 is still too many.
  16. Cut it up into strips and trim those strands (very chewy) and any fat at the top of the heart. Run under cold water after you're done trimming rinse out any and all clotted blood then throw into a frying pan in strips with minced garlic, butter, salt and pepper. Make sure you leave a slight red tint in the meat or else it will be dry. Cook on a low setting it cooks fast. If you want you can cut into cubes and fry that way too. Very good with eggs and runny yolks in the A.M. It is hands down best part of any deer.
  17. We can just pick them up off the dead ISIS "soldiers" (I use that term loosely).
  18. I'm with you, also maybe people are being a little more conservative when it comes to taking hail marys too.
  19. Pressure washer works great on fat and brains. I would recommend doing it at a car wash if you have a dog that likes to roll in nasty stuff.
  20. That is my wife's theory. I have one deer mount that is 161" I don't think I will ever shoot a buck in NY that big again, but my 2nd smallest is 133" so My wife told me in order to get another one mounted I need to beat my 2nd smallest. Well this year I got 135" so skin mount it is. All my smaller bucks are euro mounts it is cheaper and easier for me to convince my wife to hang them in the house.
  21. Got the go ahead by the wife yesterday to buy another gun! Super exciting moment for any guy right?!? Well I have been watching a particular gun for a while and saw it on sale but unfortunately with a new born and other things going on I wasn't able to purchase the gun. Well yesterday Field and Stream had the Smith & Wesson SD9VE 9mm on sale for $289.99 that was the best I have seen it in a while. Black friday had it at $299.99 and I knew they have sold for less. I generally don't buy from brick and motor but the local guys couldn't touch it for that price and said they should buy a few and re-sell. The reason for my excitement is that the SDVE series is a Glock take off. I have a Glock but didn't want to pay a Glock price for a G19. Instead this should fit the bill. From what I understand it is a Glock in Smiths clothing. Obviously the parts aren't interchangeable (that would infringe on patents) but from what I have seen the will eat any ammo and is quite accurate. Don't quote me but I think I can also fire lead thru it instead of always shooting jacketed bullets.
  22. When looking at the 1100 make sure the receiver is chambered to handle 3" my father has one in 2 3/4" and another is 3". I think it needs to say magnum. You may think you will only shoot 2 3/4" but almost all sabot slugs, turkey loads, goose loads are all 3".
  23. Neck on bucks pre rut are still good but they do get a little tougher come rut. Doe always have good neck meat. Generally I grind most of my deer anyway other than the back straps and tenderloins. I can make a lot of easy different stuff from ground meat where chunks of meat can only be made 4 or 5 easy ways.
  24. I use these too! My wife buys them at Sam's club or Walmarts. I also carry one of those little lens cloths. Most of the time I only need to clean my rangefinder as there isnt any sort of cap. my binos came with a cap i leave attached and i have those butler creek flip up scope covers.
