  1. They used to have car races on oneida lake. Little compact cars with studs on them and a little track all cleaned off. I drove my F250 out there a little ways off the real shallow area and watched the races before. This was back 25 years ago.
  2. Yup they are out on Oneida lake out behind the house. Crazy....freeze your ass and risk your life ...nope. The legion in town has a great fish dinner for $10. And I can eat it at home by the fireplace.
  3. i have a tendency to do that too! I make it habit now everytime before i shoot with gun or bow to tell myself to slow down.......it works sometimes lol. I always found the biggest thing is not to tense up - to make your self shaky.
  4. I think it's a great idea. And the fact that your doing it will mean even more to him.
  5. have you tried the vanilla? been hooked on that as a sipper.
  6. will have about 60 hours in at work by then. Will be lucky to stay awake to see any balls drop. The GF is sick and works weekend nights anyway. So , Prob watch a movie, eat some snacks, sip a beverage or two and fight to stay awake. The entertainment shows before the ball drops are pretty much unwatchable at this point so will try to pick out a good movie.
  7. well i can actually agree with some of that with you! yea! But if we have a high winter kill cant it also be attributed to high population and lack of food to sustain the numbers? And if a lot of deer die in the winter isnt it because there are a lot of deer? Our winters are going to be bad no matter how short season is and will take a lot of deer. It hasnt gotten above 10 here all day already this year. The matter of fairness is limiting availability of time to got out hunting. If I am a gun hunter why should I give up a week of hunting , and that its not fair to determine a shorter season based on what works best for some. I do agree hunting of course will affect and cause pressure on the herd, but I still cant see how 7 days of hunting will drastically affect the herd health. And I just dont think hunting is all about the take -- Cant get a deer from the couch - so dont want to miss out on valuable hunting time. It is the same playing field but the field isnt open all the time for everyone. I would think the North wouldnt want to miss out on hunting when it snows, or people around thankgiving when they have time off etc. I just cant see the restriction for the payoff. BUT>>> if you own or lease your own land i for sure think you should do that if you like. I do a little of it myself - I dont hunt or push the bedding areas or areas of comfort til the very last weekend to not pressure the deer or run them off the land. But this is by my choice, not NY's and not due to the lack of deer. And I def agree with your last statement and would also add the line to "lower " as well. and add in habitat. Everyone sees less deer the more pressure you give to the land. If you hunt it every day during bow you will see less deer, but not everyone hunts the same days, frequency or times. Its a big picture of availability for everyone. its just two different ways of looking at the issue. I do understand your thought of better for the herd, but i just dont believe in restrictions for people that we dont really need across the entire state.
  8. yes have to use the cutter or it wont work right ...... I made the same mistake . lol
  9. i use mine all the time for the last 5 years and its worked great . Maybe it had something wrong with it otherwise. I have the grinder and the sausage attachments and it works great
  10. hardest part for me is tying the damn things! lol any tips?
  11. So because deer are not out eating your corn for you to hunt them then the rest of the state shouldn't be able to hunt for a week. Pretty narrow minded. Further governed restrictions are not a win for hunters. More time in the field equals more opportunities and more chances to do what we enjoy. Makes no sense to me why you would want to shorten it. Whether I see a deer that day or not, I enjoy the hunt. And if the deer numbers across the state were in trouble I would agree with you. Maybe where you are that's the case. But in all the areas I hunt DEC can't even give away the 30,000 permits to control a robust deer herd. And even then yes sometimes hunting is tough. That's why I like it it's a challenge. But I don't want to sit home for week that I could be hunting. Nor do I want to have people across the state told that for the reasons that the deer are under so much more pressure from an extra 7 days. If the deer herd is in such trouble why has the bow season been extended, the DMP s increased, towns asking for DEC to lower the deer herd, seasons in certain areas being extended, etc.......yeah it must be in bad shape. and this is coming from a die hard bowhunter that just isnt hugely into the gun season anymore. But I am about being fair and taking a week away from the gun hunter for some reason that our deer herd is pressured is ridiculous. I wonder if some of these guys would feel the same apathy for the deer herd if the suggestion was to close the season for a week lets say Nov 1-7 cause it would be less stress on the deer herd during the rut. As many DEC seasons are built around being closed for the height of the mating seasons (fishing, frogs, April turkey, etc....)
  12. You just don't get my point....I'm sorry for that as you couldn't even pick up sarcasm either. My point is ypu want to limit the amount of time other hunters are allowed to hunt. This is not fair to the general masses for the reasons you are giving. The deer herd is NOT in any means in trouble in NY. We have a healthy and robust deer herd in NY. Taking 5-7 days out of whole year does not make or break anything with the health of the herd. As this is proven by the amount of deer. Do you think the herd is unhealthy....... why? It isn't. And all shortening the season by a week of the year will have no impact on its health. I would agree of deer numbers were low. They are not . The southern zone in most dmp's DEC is dying for more of a take, towns like Hamilton, Fayetteville, manlius, etc etc are all requesting a deer eradication, DEC just extended season in several spots to increase the deer take. Your argument to limit season to have a larger herd would be true if it was in trouble.
  13. They are in both. Deer don't pack up and move for miles and head to the city. Lol I was able to get permits for 8 deer for hunting season this year so the herd isn't healthy?? But making the season 7 days less is gonna bring deer to your hunting spot. Now that makes no sense. It's just common sense that if you hunt the same spot deer become wary of that spot. But that doesn't mean you shorten the statewide season cause your deer have become spooky where you hunt. Not everyone has that problem or that time in the woods and it's not a fix by legislation. Why would you want to limit hunters opportunities to be in the field because deer wised up to where your hunting them.
  14. Oops wrong again. So you don't think the herd numbers in NY can facilitate the long season? DEC is giving out extra permits for free in many zones and then even sent some out to people that were turned down. They are having town meetings about deer numbers all over the place and extending seasons to try and lower the population. Just because deer are " pressured" doesnt mean they disappear. Part of hunting is figuring that out. Because the deer season isn't two weeks long instead of three isn't gonna keep the population more healthy than it already is. Sorry that deer are smart and figure out where to hide. better from you when they are pressured. If you don't want to pressure them then take some time off YOUR hunting spot. But not everyone gets unlimited hunting time. What you don't appreciate is how good you have it in NY with the generous seasons we have. Why limit the time afield for everyone on the state?? Cause your deer are hiding better, yeah that's fair. And as far as the health of the herd....i would say NY is pretty healthy here. With the tough winters we have our deer herd is strong and we haven't seen any CWD like these states with shorter seasons. ( And no I don't think a shorter season has anything to do with CWD) just as I also don't think our longer season does either.
  15. making such a statement shows you dont grasp sarcasm ......it was tounge in cheek. I do get it and I do care . I care that because you want bigger bucks that you cant tell everyone else in the state that they have to hunt when you think its best. That there doesnt need to be yet another regulation put on hunters and that we actually dont need the govt to help decide which deer to shoot. Sorry you didnt get it
  16. If we cancel the gun season then there will be huge Boone and crocket bucks everywhere, you'll be tripping over them, swatting them away like flies, like seagulls at the beach. Maybe we should shorten the season, have ARs of 5 points on one side, can only hunt with traditional bows, outlaw doe urine and set the hunting time to only a half hour after sunriae and before sunset. That should do it.....lol. Huge bucks for everyone that still hunts.
  17. The states that have so called trophy hunting would prob love our long season as well. They have better trophies due to genetics, habitat and private land management. They could sell more hunting trips. It has nothing to do with a shortened season. I don't think we really care about the business part of hunting. At least I don't. Would speak for the everyday hunter and more options is always better. So if it's harder to catch bass in August we should close season....no. The deer numbers in NY show it supports the long season..... then keep it. There isnt an argument that makes hunting better to have less of it!
  18. What kind of sausage? Cased, smoked, patties, cured, etc.... If venison..... I like to do a 60/40 pork split. Otherwise it's crumbly or dry. I've made maple breakfast, sage breakfast, polish, onion pepper, jalapeño, cracked pepper, Italian, summer......
  19. And why does the harvest numbers need to be the only drive for the season length? Because the hunting gets tougher it needs to close? Last I knew most of us hunt cause we love to. If it was just for the take only, I would just buy meat in cellophane. It drives me nuts when people want to make laws that aren't needed. There doesn't need to be a law to shorten season cause someone is sick of hunting it's ridiculous.
  20. This just still perplexes me as well. Leave the season alone. We have it good. If you think it's too long dont hunt, but don't take it away from those who do want to or haven't filled the freezer for the family yet. Not every hunter is like us and has time set aside to go. There are young guys with 2 jobs and a family that could really use the time to get a chance to go out. A longer season doesn't effect you so why take it away from others. Can never understand what a hunter would want to limit their own opportunities. Makes no sense.
  21. Wiped out from a big Christmas day....
  22. All are a handshake and I give them my cell phone number. I always go over where to park and let them know with a text when I will be there. Except for the lease I have ....same thing but give $ in April. When I do ask I always ask for bowhunting. People are more open to that than gun.
  23. Happy birthday. And Merry Christmas all in one
  24. I tried to lease 45 acres that was for sale. It was owned by a lawyer. We started to make a deal for a hunting lease then the lawyer wouldn't call the realtor back. He doesn't live anywhere near here. And land is still for sale and just sits there. I looked at it to buy but it was too much.
