  1. A decent 2 1/2 year 8 point.. it was in my earlier years of hunting.. I would be ashamed to take the same shot again. ( I was taught the how and why of hunting by "redneck outlaws"). A poor excuse I know, but it took me quite a few deer and years before I acquired better standards. If you jump a deer and he is running away aim at the back of his head they said.. you will hit them somewhere between the head and the a$$. Well , I hit him in the antler. I watched him drop at the shot. So I walked over to him and there he lay with the antler about 10 feet behind him.. I couldn't find a hole anywhere in his head.
  2. I shot one in the antler once. Does that count?...lol.. about an inch above his skull and he died.
  3. Absolutely!.. I grew up with a woodstove and burned wood exclusively my whole life . My dad lives just down the rd and we were buying logs to cut and split every year to heat the old farm house. Roughly 10 years ago he had cancer and could no longer take care of the stove.. it didn't take one winter of going down in the late evening and early morning and occasionaly in the middle of the night to take care of the stove before i bought a coal stoker for him/ me..lol... It costs a little less /year for the coal vs buying the logs and cutting and splitting them.. I currently have a hand fed coal stove. A self feeding boiler is in the plans though.. They are 100% correct. Once you burn coal you will never want to burn wood again.
  4. I'm not a fan of 223 for deer. Personaly I would put the limit at under 80yds. Or a meadow gun if you wanted. If the deer was 150 yds out in the field you would probably watch it fall. The issue in not if it will kill the deer or not, but can one track and find it . With a well placed shot the deer isnt going too far.. If you screw up and everybody does..kiss the deer goodbye
  5. Same up here in the northern part of N.Y.. If someone is talking about a cord of wood they actually mean face cord.. I sold 1000s of cords in the 90s. I burn coal now. Working on my 4th ton. A full cord referred to as a pulp cord.
  6. Short term .. Sounds like a good plan..Unless pipes freeze . Repairs will probably be costlier.. But then again .. Drinking at the hotel bar sounds like a good way of spending $12k.
  7. At 47 years old I sometimes feel my age..As a carpenter/foreman and the "old"guy on site a get a kick out of being able to work circles around the young guys. Lol.. I have noticed in the last few years it doesn't come as easy as it used too... As a general rule I won't grab a hold of the really heavy things anymore. I was 210# of muscle now it's a little more like 250# mixture..:). I say I don't have to prove that I can pick up the 300#s .. I havnt tried in a few years ..so maybe I cant..lol
  8. Don't completely take this the wrong way.. But.. if you can afford 50k in property taxes you're a fool not to have a natural gas or propane generator for back up.. Take care of yourself..;)
  9. I have mulled the idea around also. Do they get classified as motorized vehicle or could one ride them on state land?
  10. Sounds like you're on the right track.. Consistent grip and anchor points are probably the most critical. For me hand grip is the one thing that I struggled with for a while.. After you master these, make sure you are focusing on the target , not the pin..
  11. Sounds like prices are all over the board... I am hoping for the $6-10/acre price range..20-25$/acre is a little steep for my blood... Only one way to find out I guess .. I didn't want to insult the owner with an unreasonable offer.. I think I will start at taxes and go from there..
  12. Depends on pricing , I guess.. Ideally it would be year round.. where I can do some pre season scouting. Etc..
  13. They do like the sumac!
  14. Been there. Tried that.. ha ha. On these specific properties . I will definitely knock on some doors if I cannot come to an arrangement on one of these properties. . . I am really liking them because of the proximity to my home. Less than 2 miles... I have lost most of the free hunting over the years to those who were willing to pay... The small farms are disappearing and it is harder to seal a deal with a favor and a handshake..
  15. The local farm that I have hunted for close to 35 years is sold. What is everybody paying for a hunting lease? I am checking out some local farm lands that may be available for lease.. Have you seen prices adjusted based on the amount of fields vs. woods? One chunk has roughly 200 acres of fields and only 20 acres of woods. I cannot see paying full price for all the fields..
  16. I have cut apart many old steel pipes. They are usually always partially plugged.. combination of corrosion and regugunga....So much so that I wonder how they worked at all..
  17. Yes.. I believe it is the only legit option to transition between old metal piping and modern pvc . I've used them dozens if not 100s of times over the past 30 years.. No known problems ....yet.. lol....knock on wood..
  18. www.fernco.com/plumbing/flexible-couplings
  19. Imo. If you are armed and on site you best be confronting the problem imediately or go back to the office and turn in your badge.
  20. Wow! That is awesome. Many hours of work there.
  21. We dumped 20+ larger poplar trees today on a friend's property today. We stopped mid-afternoon for a bonfire and hotdogs. Before we left the deer were already eating on the tops less than 150 yds away... Typically , when we cut trees in the winter the deer are eating the tops within hours.
  22. I could show you 1/2 dozen or so "warehouses" within a few minutes drive of my house. Friends who went to Wal-Mart or local gun shops and bought out every round on the shelf within hours of them arriving . Not realizing they or those like them were the problem..lol
  23. I have been guilty of travelling quickly down back rds also.. Now that i have a kid and live on one of these back rds I try to be more conscientious. When we are riding bikes or going for a walk down the rd , it burns my a$$ to be buzzed by some moron in a hurry or using the rd as a shortcut to save a minute off their commute to work... I don't brake check but I will travel 15 mph for as many miles as it takes for them to pass....lol...I do not want my family in danger of getting hit by the guy behind.
  24. 5 months out of the year i spend close to every weekend at camp. I do a lot of bass (large mouth)and crappie fishing Occasionally pike. I can catch more bass with a bag of senco style worms and a few hooks than I can with the 100s dollars of lures etc. That I have collected in my tackle box over the years.. .lol In my experience ,if the pike are biting , you cannot go wrong with a white spinner bait.. Crappie . I like a 1/16 oz maribu jig or a 2" flavored/scented soft plastic minnow or" squirming squirts" from bass pro..
  25. If you are adventurous and have a small boat.. one of the best spots I know to catch catfish is below the dam on the Oswegatchie. If you go all the way to the north east end of Black lake to the river and take a left its roughly 1 mile or so to dam. . The river is shallow though past the park and under the bridge.. I have seen others do it with v bottoms and small motors. We always used a canoe..
