Whats a good pistol?

Recommended Posts

I working on submitting my pistol permit app and I wondered when I get accepted what I will get. This is where I need your help. Looking for something that doesn't ring dollar bills every time I shoot, pretty concealable it also cant be little due to my big hands. Ideas??

Glock 26

Why?

I had a 27 and you couldn't give me another.

How about a Glock 19, 23 etc. A Glock 19 is a 9mm and you can shoot that thing darn near cheaper than a .22 these days. Most people won't have much trouble concealing it either, especially if you're a big dude. I have a S&W Sheild in 9mm and it is the cats meow in my not too humble opinion.

Being a new permit holder soon, go with an inexpensive to shoot, fun and reliable gun like a Glock and see WTH it's all about.

The Shield is nice, I love mine. Conceals easy, shoots well and while it's my first 9 in 30 years of owning handguns,I'll say ammo is around and the price is better then other calibers I buy.

The price is pretty good too.

With the 8 round mag it fits my hand great, but I don't have big mits.

Best bet is visit a gun shop, and try a few on for size. Narrow it down then research them.

Every guy here will name a different gun.....

shield looks pretty damn sweet and the most recommended so far.

My Shield in a Simply Rugged holster I just sold two days ago.  The holster is sold, NOT the gun!

If you have a place to shoot, I'd let you plink a few mags this summer.

you can still find .22 and it's still a lot cheaper.  that said 9mm is a nice safe option.  lots of that out there and you can reload or sell the brass.  striker fire guns like the glock are nice and simple.  that said a single/double action hammered gun isn't bad either.  the double action pull just takes getting used to but if you start with that then that's all you'll know, thus no worries.  best to go into a gun shop and check them out first hand.

every county is different but mine in rensselaer county took 8 months.  I started it in the end of February and got it back in the beginning of October of last year I believe.  I've got reservations believing the 5 week time frame, even if he was brazen and called in favors.

It all depends on the county and the judicial staff. Livingston Co. is about as good as it gets for the permit process.

What do you hope to do with the pistol?

Other than being concealable, target, hunting, personal protection (concealed carry) for which you need a full carry permit, or home protection, where anything goes. If it is your first pistol, .22 lets you practice the most for the price. .22s are getting pretty easy to find again.

After that in centerfire, probably 9mm is most affordable for shooting, if not versatility (where.38 special/.357 mag reigns, from self defence, hunting, target use, and still moderate cost). I would decide on your caliber / purpose first, then the actual gun, other wise its kind of putting the cart in front of the horse.

A glock 23 or 19. Same frame in either .40 or 9. It's small enough to conceal but not to small to hold and not to big to try and hide. I think it's the sweet spot, but I'm a 23 owner so I might be biased. The full frames are good bedside guns and the pocket pistols have their place too. Pretty much any gun in this size is a great buy from any manufacturer. The glock is nothing fancy but it's reputation for reliability is not make believe. You pull the trigger and it always goes bang.

During the winter I carry glock21 with a cross breed super tuck summer is the S&W bodyguard with a pocket holster or crossbreed mini tuck ... The bodyguard is not something your goin to want to take to the range and put 300 round threw but it has the features I wanted in the summer size I wanted

The Glock 21 (.45) is my gun of choice because it's small enough to carry (technically) and it will knock down just about anything around here, but if I were to only have one pistol for carrying, it wouldn't be the 21 because it's really too big AND the bullets for a .45 are very expensive. I would probably go with a .40 or 9mm. You need to think about the cost of the bullets as even if you're a billionaire, you get to a point where you're like "Hey, this is a tremendous waste of money." Yes, you can make your own, but I haven't gotten that far yet.

Also, I'm biased as I only have a few pistols but I can tell you that you can take a Glock, drop it in the sand, kick it off a cliff, poop on it, run over it with your car....and still it will fire and you can field strip it in <10 seconds.

I just got my permit and my first pistol. After much hands on and research I went with a Glock 19 Gen 4 9mm. Cheapest findable ammo out there. I am 6-2 so I wanted a gun that did not disappear in my hand but not be too big to occasionally conceal. I am not disappointed.

I will get a 22 after I hoard up a few thousand rounds of 22. But unless you can be at a store at 9 am every morning good luck on that!!
