fasteddie
I don't go out unless I have to . It is 0 degrees right now . When I get too bored , I can go to the basement and shoot a few arrows . I may do some reloading in March but really don't need to do any . ants
Im itching to take a walk around the property but the crotch deep snow won't let it happen for a while. I drove by one of the fields at around 5. I saw 5 deer around 100 yards from the road. I thought they were bedded down but they started to run when I stopped the truck. Thats when I realized that they weren't bedded but standing in snow that was up to their chests. Add in razor sharp winds and Im staying in for a while. grampy
For me it's getting out there on snowshoes. I go at least a couple times a week. Even was out there in minus forty wind chills two weeks ago, but I just can't stand being stuck inside. I love being in the woods in the winter and the deer are using my trails now in the deep snow. I have been cutting hemlock branches for them too. As much as I enjoy the winter woods, I have to admit, it's been a cold and windy one for sure. Elmo
Any other year I would still be out there looking for small game, predators, or crows. Even if I know I'm not going to see anything, just hiking through the woods with rifle in hand is all I need some times. This year has just been brutal with the weather.
sweet old bill
Not me at 73, I will wait till it is spring. We are even having snow in Myrtle beach SC today, with 1 inches maybe and turning then to rain later in the day. But this week no going out to the local Sand dune archers that I am a member and shooting the bow, practice area is covered with water from lots of rain in the pass 3 days, but come Sunday it will be sunny and 68 degrees they are calling for so I will be out there with the bow... Doc
Right now I have two thermometers that say it is -16 degrees out there. That's not wind-chill, that's actual temperature. I am sure that before daybreak, it will drop some more. When temperatures start with that nonsense, the only outdoors that I do is to scamper from the house to the car and that only happens when I really need to head out town to get some necessary essentials. As far as what's going on out in the woods, that is limited to me sitting on the couch sympathizing with all the poor critters that have to try to survive in those brutal temperatures. You know how they are always telling you to be sure to bring all pets indoors? Well unfortunately the woods-critters (other than those that have underground accommodations) just have to tough it out. And I am sure there are some that won't be making it. But, I figure humans are on a slightly higher level of development, and as long as I have protection against that kind of brutal weather, I guess I will take advantage of it and stay where I belong. Indoors! .... lol.
fasteddie
I am anxious to get down to Geneseo to see if my Pod Blind got trashed by the weather but i'm not walking 3/4 of a mile in deep snow in this copld weather to find out . I'm heading for Canandaigua in a few minutes to check out the Runnings Store . It's up to 8 degrees already !
growalot
It was same here Doc...but we are at 0 now. with a steady wind....I would never have complained this winter or last fall...if it had not been for these God awful winds,,,,Yet I pray they do not decide to subside when summer gets here...I really have more problems with hot weather than cold...until winds are factored in. fasteddie
Drove to Canandaigua and back today . Did a lot of rubber-necking but never saw any deer . That Runnings store is awesome . It is huge . They had a cot and chairs back by the camping / hunting area . I wondered if it was for folks to take a break . Great store ! It's not one that you just go into and wander around for a few minutes and leave. It used to be a big old Walmart before they built the new super store. I kind of describe it as being a Tractor Supply and Lowes on steroids. Nothing amazing about the prices one way or the other, but the merchandise selection is almost a one-stop-shopping experience. By the way, they are my main supplier of licorice.
genesee_mohican
In a normal winter I'd be grouse hunting, scouting, working on stands, cutting firewood. This year I bought a pair of snowshoes to get around and get some exercise. Trying to make the most of it but mostly on hold.
landtracdeerhunter
Made it down the laneway yesterday, as far as was plowed. Maybe 3/4 of a mile. Squirrels were active in the trees, rabbit tracks all over. Deer trail right out of the woods heading into the red willow brush. Sure was nice to get out in the sun, what little their was.
