What's The Deal With 22 Ammo?

I have read all the hoolpla. It all seems like BS to me!

While out this evening looking at a new bow, the g/f wanders off to look at 22 rifles just to shoot targets. She doesn't want to hunt, but was thinking of buying a 22 to shoot at targets. On the way home she asks me why the shop sold the rifle, but not the ammo. My reply  was "We have an *** **** in office who created a stupid law to ban everything!".

We talked, and I honestly could not give her an answer that made sense.

Might I suggest that if your gal is interested in target shooting an air gun may be the solution, ammo is cheap and plentiful, they are more powerful than ever and honestly it's fun to shoot. I practice almost every day (weather permitting) with either my .22 air pistol or .177 rifle once I made a range at home.

Actually the blame lies within our own ranks. We can blame whoever we want, but the problem is hoarding shooters. Politicians may have caused the climate that promotes hoarding, but it is our own selfishness that brings it all to reality.

We have 22 in stock here for the last few months now in the Binghamton area. It was bad for about a year but seems to be better now.

The ammo manufactures are playing some games though and I got bit. Was in Gander Mountain in Syracuse a couple weeks ago. they had a few bricks of American Eagle hollow point. 10 box bricks. 5 box max per person. So since I was with someone I got a brick. $3 a box so a pretty good deal, right? Well I thought so until I opened the brick (It has been so long since I actually had a full brick in my hands...lol), well the boxes just felt weird and on closer inspection they were 40 round boxes not the normal 50. so instead of the 6 cents a round I thought I bought it was almost 8 cents a round. Not the deal I thought I was getting.

Culver --- American Eagle 22 ammo has always been 40 per box . I found that out in the last century when I bought a brick at Dunhams in Southtown Plaza .

 

About 10 years ago , I gave away almost a brick of Remington Thunderbolt 22 ammo . It was the dirtist 22 ammo that I had ever shot . It really dirtied up my Ruger pistol .

Still cannot find it easily in the Syracuse area.  The super expensive match grade stuff is available at some stores, but its well over $10 for a box of 50....No thanks.

 

I bought an air rifle last year just for the fact I could readily buy pellets...and the pellet rifles of today are pretty accurate.  Mine will hollow out a quarter sized target at about 30 yards.

22LR ammo is being produced like mad from all manufacturers.  problem is there's a shortage so people feel the need to buy more.  to buy a lot isn't all that hard because a lot is cheap enough for the average joe  ...if there's no store limit.  the problem is some people are a jerk and feel they need to keep buying more and more of anything 22 cal so it can sit in the closet at home and many times sell it illegally for ridiculous costs.  while it's their right to buy what they can, they know the situation and aren't being considerate of others needs who actually want to shoot or need just a little.
 

I shoot 22LR competitively and I'm telling you it's 5 times harder to find that ammo versus bulk or cheap high velocity 22LR you can get in a box store.  the most common being CCI standard velocity (it's cheaper and accurate).  I can't buy misc packs 50 rounds at a time.  each match bullseye round is 30 rounds if you don't check your zero or practice before.  i'll shoot 2-3 a week during the winter.  I can't keep sighting in my gun every time and not all standard or sub-sonic velocity ammo cycles dependably in a pistol.  so I need lots of ammo of the same brand/type/lot.  ...and it's expensive at about $ 0.12 per round.

I feel your pain.  just have to keep looking.  get what you NEED and step aside for others to get some.

That is EXACTLY what it is. Ammo manufacturers are at 100% production with .22 ammo.  The local GM gets as much as they ever have, every week and the same selfish douche nozzles are there every delivery day (usually Friday) to buy all they can, to hoard and/or resell. I have seen it more than once. If you are one of these people, that buys up all the 22 ammo you can, while already sitting on a pile of it, you are a selfish, useless little douche. You are screwing other sportsmen/shooters. Hope the wall of 22 ammo you're hoarding, falls over and crushes you stones!!! Douche!!

I have a couple basic air rifles, both cheezy Crossman M417's. Actually they are pretty nice little air rifles. She doesn't like them. Says they are a tool to teach. Bah...W/E...LOL

 

We haven't been calling around for a place to get the ammo. It just seems odd, even to me that a shop would have a bunch of the rifles for sale and no ammo. Her words, "Would someone buy a car that didn't have tires on it, then have to go get the tires somewhere else?". I see her point.

 

Hoarders are a huge PITA! When she had her shotgun we had a hard time finding the ammo that would have been best for her to hunt with. Like #4 shot, and when we did find a box it was expensive. I don't even want to talk about the sabot slugs. Actually she sold the ammo to biggamefish from this site for $50. The box of #4's and the two boxes of Hornady SST's were more then that.

 

I am not sure why she is thinking of buying another firearm, I asked and got the look, so I shut up.

 

I just can't seem to wrap my head around the 22 ammo issue. Isn't that still the go to caliber to start teaching our young with?

I've seen them with my own eyes.  I didnt want to believe it, but yes, one Friday morning, I went to the GM there and they were lined up outside and rushed the counter once doors opened until it was gone.
