Doc
So, is this shortage problem getting any better or is this going to be the way it is from now on (or possibly even worse)? I mean, what's the point of buying the .22 rifles if you can't find ammo?
G-Man
That's why I switched to 9mm carbine, I ca n reload ammo is inexpensive on sale and available
Borngeechee
It's like I don't want to shoot what I have because ya never know when your going to get more. I always get alerts from online retailers when in stock but thanks to Cuomo I can't order it
loworange88
I've seen it come and go in spurts. I'll see it here and there for a period of time, then I don't see it for a long time. CNY has a problem with "hoarders" the local stores get hit early in the AM when they get a shipment(S) and it all gets bought up. On the flip side....17 HMR is all over the place near me. Doc
So, what's the bottom line? Is the future of the .22 caliber going to be limited only to the hoarders by ammo shortages? How far is this nonsense really going to go?
growalot
I talked to a guy from the upper Midwest...ppl are hording them...yep...just like ppl that are buying silver and gold...ammo is being bought...what was it he said..." Need a gal. of milk...here's 5 rounds in exchange." He wasn't kidding and apparently that is a very common thought out there...the longer Obama and the democrats are in office, the number of people preparing is increasing....from when he bought his ammo...his return has doubled if need be. The_Field_Ager
Is 'hoarding' really hurting if stores are limiting purchases? Makes no sense unless folks are turning up with 5 or 6 other family members.
diplomat019
Ive been to stores in florida and there were stacks of 22 ammo. dbHunterNY
the hoarding on and off is localized. locally some might get their fill and it'll stay on the self for a couple days. most will only sell you a box of 50 though and are breaking up any bricks they get, unless you're at a big box store. then nobody knows any better. seen it show up in waves and then none for a while. figure it's just how the distribution from the mfg goes down throughout the country. they're making more of it than ever before.I think the hoarding will continue as long as those in office are prone to putting the squeeze on ammo and guns. 22LR is cheap so it's easy for the average joe to pick up a hoarding habit. I don't foresee it going away any time soon. It might get a whole lot worse if Clinton gets elected to steer the ship.sweet old bill, if you were as far away as you are you'd have some in your hands. your situation is the exact reason I'd give any up. that or my family and friends asking for some as Christmas or bday gifts. lol

dbHunterNY
The other thing...thinking regional is competition shooting...I believe our gun club has that ...I hear guys shooting down there all week and then the have the competitions on the weekends any competition shooters, including myself, much prefer better quality stuff that's still relatively cheaper. standard velocity ammo and sometimes especially for rifle sub-sonic. the high velocity Remington Golden Bullets, Winchester Wildcat, etc. just aren't consistent enough and accuracy depends on your gun. we prefer to have large amounts of the same lot too (half or full cases). seems the going rate is $600 per case (5,000 rounds) when I got either Eley Sport or Aguila std velocity target. Hoarders is the reason stores put limits on it. If the store put out all the 22 ammo they had, one or two selfish A-Holes would buy up every last round all at once. Limits have been in place for about two years now. How bad can the hoarding be at this point? Full disclosure. I haven't bought .22 in about 2 years, before the drought really set in. Thing is, people where sayin it was coming long before it actually hit, so once a week I would buy a brick. I have several thousand rounds now, but I got 'em all when there was no apparent shortage. I see no improvement locally, I do look from time to time, usually everyone is out, but even if I see a stray box of cci I just can't be bothered. I have moved onto different calibers now. From what I am hearing here, we have a distribution problem. Not a hoarding problem. Edited June 25, 2015 by Papist

The local Gander MTN and I'm sure other stores, have a line of A-holes outside waiting on Shipment days, and as soon as the doors open, they rush the counter, buy up all that the store has, and move on to the next store. I've seen it with my own two eyes. The clerks will then say they see the same faces week after week of the same guys buying up all they can. Other store clerks have said the same thing at different times. Walmart, Dicks, Herbs, Gander.... I havent really hit up any of the "local" smaller shops, only reason is from where I am in Cicero, its a drive and half to get to some of the smaller shops, and at that point its not worth MY time. And yes like you...I have moved onto other calibers to fill the void. But I was never the type of guy to shoot up a 500 round brick in an afternoon anyways. EspressoBuzz
I'm sure the hoarding will end once the anti-Christ is out of office, I think the run on guns and ammo start the first day he took office.

The only way to really hamper the hoarding, in my mind is to ration it.....lets say hypothetically speaking; Cicero Gander MTN, made a policy that to buy limit supply(in ultra high demand) ammo(items), said customer needs a "store card" that MUST be scanned for limited supply items, and if you reach your limit for a period of time(week, month, quarterly) Then you aren't allowed to purchase this item. However there seem to be all sorts of issues or problems that could occur with this method, not to mention the ammount of pissing and moaning that would stem from it, and the super paranoid wondering who can see how much of any item was bought blah blah blah.... Plus none of the stores would do this because they are turning profit margins at the end of the day. Yup….I have seen the same thing at the same GM store. Its always the same faces. A few of those guys are more than A-holes. I have seen them bitch about limits, try to get in line twice and try to buy other customers 22's. The cicero GM is having CCI Stingers on sale Saturday. The same guys will be lined up outside an hour before the place even opens. ….Guaranteed
ny hunter
I was at the GM in middletown 2 weeks ago.I was surprised at the amount they had on the shelf, when I asked the gentlemen behind the counter he said it well all be gone first thing monday morning. He said the same bunch of guys well be here before the store opens and empty the shelf....So the hoarding is the problem....and I think it well go on no matter how much these guys have.... EspressoBuzz
I just want to ask one question of all the guys who have witnessed the hoarders first hand, and I realize the answer will be anecdotal at best. I'm just curious how many of the people spoken of in the above posts are black. The ones you see in line time and time again, waiting outside the store before opening, etc. Statically depending on where you live it should all average out to be no more than 2 in 10.
