I'm going to go ahead n call it , it's going to bust loose Sat / Sun after this warm up and lows in the 30's high in the 40's , at least here in WNY .... My advice , get some sleep in the next day or so n be in the stand as long as you can stand this weekend !

Just said the same thing to a friend. Lower temps, new moon (if you believe in that) and rut will combine to get things rocking.

So maybe I have learned something from that bad shot. Advice is congealing around not taking shots so far. I'm not good enough for it, even though I perform well at the range. Perhaps field distance should be acceptable accuracy at the range divided by 2, which puts me more like 20 yards.

Good plan. Even if you are nervous and shot isn't perfect, it will be much better than a less than perfect shot at 30. Think angles and how distance from the mark grows exponentially the further out you go. Plus, deer have less time to react. You will get it done, no doubt.

. I will say this the deer that I hit over the weekend most likely killed and did not recover was a error of stand shooting. Not my form or the shot just the point of aim, the deer was closer then I thought she was and with the steep angel of the shot and the arc of the arrow I hit very high to the point the arrow hit almost vertical. If I had aimed just below the deer it would have been a perfect hit.... Pure mental error on my part and I will be the first to admit it

I wont shoot deer right below me. The kill zone is small and even a dead deer can result in a long tracking job. Much easier to wait until they move away a bit. Kinda like Larry said, wait and choose.

So back on topic, it was very slow this morning. Washing hunting gear and watching movies the rest of the day.

Yesterday we hung a hangon six feet above my buddies ladder stand. First time tried filming. He called a buck in. Not one he wanted to shoot but it was cool filming him. Hung around stand for a while. If I ever get technically proficient enough to post video, I will post it.

Here he is, just a photo of the camera screen:

Core  the guys have heard me preach this in the past so it is not chastising...Studing shooting from and elevated or towards different elevations is just totally different than actually shooting from them....... I can not stress enough that if one is taking to the trees......their last 2 weeks of practice before season should be from the trees especially new shooters...3 things that magically leave your mind when seeing a deer coming into range...bend at waist...do not grip the bow and breath...those are 3 things I start repeating in my head the moment I see the deer...it relieves that pressure valve a bit as it were.

How many pin's do you use. I was messed up like 10 years ago with to many pin's. Went to 1 pin from 10 out to 30 yards and problem solved. 1 pin and you bear down better i believe and make better shots, Kinda like crosshairs on a scope, you can zero right on and pick a hair!

How nervous/excited are you getting when it's time to take that shot . I practice archery more then enough and I would say an above average shooter. However when it comes time to take a shot at a live animal I become a total wreck ,my heart feels like it's gonna pop through my chest and can honestly say that nerves over come all the practice I put in before the season.

I used to think I was calm, but yesterday while the deer came into range I had time to realize my heart rate had indeed gone sky high.

I got to the range at lunch today. First volley of 6 arrows I sent at the 30 yard target. 5 were within 2" of center, one was 3" off, so that would be a 6" group including the bad one. My range accuracy just isn't translating, so I think I will have to follow the advice to simply keep distances much shorter.

Bflo, I will think more on that, too, thanks. My stance was definitely weird on account of the safety harness.

growalot I will remember that: waist, grip, breath.

How many pin's do you use.
Three right now. It is a bit of clutter, two might be better even, like a 15 and a 25 for example.

However, I think we've taken this thread too far off now, so any other ideas please feel free to post here http://huntingny.com/forums/topic/29941-first-shot-in-four-weeks-missed-again/?hl=%2Bmissed+%2Bagain.

Dicks was fresh out of camo shorts, so I made a camo speedo out of some long johns! They're cutting corn

on 3 sides of me hope that keeps deer in the woods. Our oldest daughter is up in a ladder stand , learning to climb , harness and sit still for gun season .

Here's a sideways pic !
