Average Distance SZ ?

Just Curious .... what might be the average distance for a shot taken in the southern zone .  I myself have not taken a shot over 100 yards in quite a few years .  Luckily deer are aplenty where I hunt .

Hunting in the woods, probably 50 yards..

 

Hunting fields, probably 100-150 yards..

 

The longest shot I have taken in New York recently was 225 yards, according to my buddy's rangefinder.  That from his enclosed, heated tower stand that overlooks several foodplots..Max range from that stand is about 400 yards.

I gun hunt my bow stands so 50-60 yards is about the longest.

I was out yesterday with my 100 foot tape, putting up distance markers from my stand.At 20 ,50 and 100 yards, the longest shot I could get is 125 yards,safely.

When I gun hunt, its usually no longer then 70 yards max when in the woods. Out in the open I can sometimes take up to 125 yard shots but even that's a bit of a stretch.

Area I hunt is rifle/shotgun area. I have no need to use a rifle as shots are always confined to 75 yards tops. Hunting hardwoods. Most deer are shot inside 40 yards.

I shot a deer 2 years ago at a little over 200 yards and thats by far the longest shot I have ever taken. I would say average is about 50yds.

I agree Turkey feathers , but consider this. I have hunted with 12ga (mostly pumps) for close to 40 years prior to rifle season here. I like to practice a bit, and it's no fun after a while of that 12ga pump beating my shoulder .

My .270 is a joy to shoot plus it slimmer more comfortable package. My accuracy has become more pin point as well.

I agree that a rifle is more cumbersome that a clunky 12ga....I use a .30-.30 in tight quarters...and a .30-.06 in open fields when you are looking to reach out and poke one from 100+ yards

Here in shotgun area I set up my stands with 75 and under shots. Wouldn't mind poking to 125 on a field. Rifle I'm comfortable at 200.

My longest shot at a deer is 150 paces with a Remington xp-100 in 6mm br rem. That was a 1 shot head shot in an open bean field with a good rest. But all my other deer have been 75yd’s or less mostly less.

I would have to say that my "average" shot is about 90 yards.
