Ive done them in a marinade and then cooked on the grill. I like my steaks rare as well, but the bear was very good even cooked all the way through.

I am no expert on the matter by any means, but I do think I recall reading that bears are often full of trichinosis, and cooking is the only safe protection from that scary disease.

I shot one a few years back only because i find it to be a real trophy in NY and only a few are shot each year in my entire county, this one happened to be the only one shot in the township that year. In my eyes a real NY trophy. Shot her high up on my property  and thankfully was able to get the UTV right to her.  If not for the UTV not sure what i would have done, she was 230lbs and theres no where to really grab them to pull. By the way lots of corn out my way and that bear tasted fantastic. Plan ahead on how to get the bear out before you squeeze the trigger and yes the meat needs to be cooked very well to avoid getting trichinosis. Would i shoot another , doubt it. That one NY trophy taken off my property is good for me and doubt it can be repeated.Made a rug out of mine and love it.

That thought kind of crossed my mind too. I am a ground stand hunter, and aggravating a short tempered big meat eater that would be on me in a second or two with a weapon that has zero stopping power does kind of make me think twice about what kind of weapon I would consider poking at him with.....lol.

I would definitely think twice about shooting one with my crossbow or ML, but if it is not a cub, or a sow with cubs, then I am definitely shooting with my 30/06 or 30/30.  The reasons to shoot with those outnumber the reasons not to (having a few followup shots available quick makes the difference).  I hope my father in law would pay for the rug.  I know he would be there with his loader tractor or side by side ATV to get it out of the woods and into the truck.  The processer up there (Nolt's in Lowville) only charges $50 to skin and process an average-sized one.  I have tried bear meat from a 200 pounder that a friend killed a few years ago.  We cooked a roast in the crock-pot, and made bear stew.  It was better than any venison or beef stew that I have ever had.   No triconosis worm can survive 6 hours in a crock-pot  He said that the larger ones are not as tasty, but I suppose what they eat also has some effect.   It is true that you do not get much boneless meat out of a bear.  Most of their weight is carried in bone, fat, head, and hide.  Field dressed, that 200 pounder yielded about the same as a 75 pound button buck.   If they were a fish, they would be a sheephead compared to a bass in that respect.   At least they do not take up much room in the freezer.

What a worthless waste of 6 seconds of my life to read this.  It's a function of life my friend. Bears don't do much damage to deer population in the long run.

They ruined my hot tub . tore a hole in The barn wall to get in .ripped down bird feeders. Chewed up and carried off 3 d targets..including a block i got so they wouldn't get confused thinking it was an animal. Not to mention carring off my Webber grill and breaking the burners.( near damage isn't covered) I'd much rather see them as an occasional visitor in my area..  Usless things.. Can't open window on ground floor or porch as the Damn bastereds will get in the house.. Kill every one you see imo

Could care less about deer population they are as thick as fleas anyway.

Obviously your bears are hitting the bath salts. Bears are simply a privilege to have around. Sorry they didn't cook you anything on your grill before they carried it off to a Bills pregame tailgate   Re 3D targets.  How are they shooting at 20-30 yards ?  Kill everyone you see ? Really?! Here goes another coyote thread   Lighten up Francis.

You can come kill one ..they are becoming a real nuisances.. It's a running joke they follow me from stand to stand.. Nothing like going to your stand in the dark and finding a heaping pile of near shot..
