What A Break For Us Hunters This Weekend!!

After all the horribly hot weather we have had this summer we had a GREAT weekend temperature and cloud wise to get r' done in the woods.  Cool temps and overcast clouds got the guys, gals and kids out hanging stands, brushing stands, trail work and plot work.

I know all this because Friday night I went with my father to Canadice to visit with an ailing friend and spend the night.  Saturday I hit it hard early in the morning; one rickety stand I put up on a whim last year really panned out but it wasn't the safest.  That one got pulled and a new one hung in its place.......

I checked a few other stands and all are good, apples are shaky at best but acorns look good. I hung another stand in a new area and am excited about the prospects of it.  Maybe it's too close to a bedding area but that's the way I roll, always on the edge. :)

I helped my buddy with a bunch of chores and that was time well spent and efficient.  Picked some apples and they're being made into a couple pies right now by the Mrs.

On the way home yesterday I saw numerous cars and truck parked along the road and I know they were hitting it hard too.  Dad and I stopped in McDonald's in Lakeville for a couple hot chocolates (he likes them, I got one just 'cause) and there was a guy and his family getting into a Power Wagon, towing a trailer and four wheeler.  A treestand was in the trailer and it looked like a couple bags of seed.  Doing what a family should be doing on a FINE late summer day!!

Went down with Joe today, racketed on stand that was up but not secured , chain sawed a bit, that stand is set.

Number three big stand was still on ground, got that up,and minor trimming , will come back Wed to finish trimming up . Heat doesn’t bother me, but I prefer cooler for this work, big plus was no bugs !

Was going to move another small ladder, but we decided it was to risky climbing even with a ground guy to steady, ill cut strap from ground Wed with my pole saw . Small tree, stand was leaning quite a bit and ladder was pulling apart as I had lost most of the clips , didn’t want to remove strap while in air .

I too saw other hunters with quads in tow, with treestands and pole saws sticking out ftom truck beds. The long awaited, perfect weekend for outdoor stuff!

Went to property this morning, burned up a box of 270 win with the Sako. Swapped cards from four cams. Got deer on all of em. Checked plots, deer are hammering the rye grass and winter wheat already. Radish and beets, not so much. But that will come with the snow and cold weather.

Picked up grandson on the way home. Spent four hours shooting compounds and crossbows, with broadheads.

Mrs. cooked up a delicious turkey dinner for us all.

Watching the Panthers game now with the boys.

Life is good!!!

I spent the night at my buddies house in Cuba to get some last minute bait sites filled and what not . I decided to take his 3 wheeler for a ride around his property before he got home from the legion . I got withing 30 yards of 2 of the biggest racked bucks i ever seen in the woods , they gave me a good long look before running away onto the neighbors property and out of sight .

Ha three cams. One is broke another the display doesn’t work and the on,off and third function I forget, the knob is missing and I have to use my knife to slide to “ on” , well I over slid it and it wasn’t on.

The third I brought home last time because I wasn’t sure that one was working ( it is ) . So I think all told ,with not even putting them out till maybe two weeks ago and them not working or on... I got one doe so far .

Know what ? I don’t care to much .

I pulled cards from the cameras and have plenty of doe, fawns and Jr bucks, none of the bigger bucks have been by the cams.  No worries, they’ll show up at some point. Hopefully I don’t get an itchy trigger finger first. :)

I'm in the same boat.  No big bucks , but gonna be tempted if that high 6 comes out that I did get on cam.  Usually don't get a lot of big bucks anyway but when they do show its usually near season or in it.

I did some work out back myself.  I have a ton of small short pines out back, about 2"-4" diameter in size that fell over during that bad blizzard.  Basically a tangled mess out back,  so i went back, and consolidated them into a bunch of piles so I can walk through there, and hoping it increases animal travel.  I only did a certain area, hope it was a good move.  I did see a lot of deer scat.  Regardless,  I wouldn't have been able to shoot in there.

Sounds like you had a great weekend Lawdwaz.

Were you able to get his xbow dialed in good with the Bolt?  What broadheads are you using (I forgot to ask you last week)?

Yes!! We got the Nikon Bolt dialed in perfect! Man, do I love that scope on a crossbow! So much better than the package scope that the Barnett came with. Sighted in at 20, it's dead on at 30, just a touch low at 40, about two inches low at 50. I don't shoot at deer any farther than 30 yards, with ANY stick and string, so it's good to go!

100 grain, two blade Slick Tricks for broadheads in both crossbows.

Thanks again buddy, for the great deal you gave me on that scope! Will be picking up another one in the off season to mount on the 370 Sniper.  Should have done it over the summer, but got too busy, and didn't.
