Was talking to a guy who had his shotgun stolen from the parking lot at one of the public land areas  in Putnam.

Beretta shotgun ,

Said thinks was someone in a red pickup

The guy put the gun down in the back seat of a his vehicle  and walked less then 100 yards to wash his hands in a stream  near the lot said  he was gone less then 5 minutes .

Came back gun was gone noticed a red pickup leaving the lot as he was walking back he said

Lesson dont leave nothing in your car unless its locked and out of sight especially a firearm!!

Crazy how fast thieves work! It's too bad he felt a fire arm was that safe not to lock door

Those  state land lot areas not to many people around alot of the times  so I guess he got a false sense of security.

He did not say but he may have just forgot to lock the door .

But he said it all went down in 5 minutes or less  .

I hate having to watch your back every time you turn around these days, and around every corner or intersection you drive through because no one can be trusted. Such a shame how this society has become..

I hope he finds out who it is, and this person gets his ass handed to him..

The guy was in his late 70s

He   worked  his ass off his whole life to injoy his retirement  doing some hunting and gets robbed .

Some people are such scumbags .

Did he report it? Maybe it will show up on local Craigslist and they can catch the guy

I’m of the belief I should be able to leave my wallet on the dash of my unlocked car , however I know that’s not true . I don’t walk 3 feet away without locking my vehicles, if I go get in my car and realize I have to go back inside my house to say grab my sunglasses on the kitchen counter ,I lock it for the 30 seconds that takes .

Its a simple press of a button . There is nothing of value you can see from the outside , when I hunt my soft gun case is folded over the seat ,so you can see it’s empty .

Some parts of the country it popular to steal cell phones, purses, wallets that are left on front seats while people fill their gas tanks, so I lock mine while I fill up if there’s anything in there .

Parking lots at gyms trailheads, and parks are prime targets ,they know folks leave things inside there. My town has a few parks popular with dog walkers, they break in even if they don’t see things as most women won’t bring their purse on the walks .

I do the exact same.  Sometimes I'll get a funny look from others filling up when the horn beeps, but don't care.  There are too many surveillance videos of thieves sneaking open the passenger side door to steal a purse, cell phone, etc.  You certainly do not want to leave a firearm unsecured and in plain sight.

That said, I hope the felonious scumbag is caught and justice served.

people such scum. i lose my mind every time have a camera stolen, never mind a gun . i would set up an ambush have a friends truck or something , leave an item of perceived value in the truck while waiting or hiding in the woods. see if anyone attempts to rob the vehicle. chances are this thief will be tempted to investigate any trucks parked in these public hunting spots. Then if you notice anyone attempt to steal from you you can handle as you feel is appropriate. this makes me super nervous as i hunt Putnam public land frequently. I always lock up and leave cases open but doesn't take much to get into a locked truck.

Don't assume it was another sportsman.  Thieves are known to hang around places where hunters are, just hoping for an easy change to steal a firearm.  It's one of the easiest things a thief can sell for big money.

Always make sure your gun is secured, and always assume someone is watching you and your gun.

Yes true in Putnam especially you get hickers bikers dog walkers joggers  beer drinking kids using those areas at times .

You never know could have  been  planned or could have been just opportunist who saw a chance to easily steel something to make a fast buck . I  have a hard time thinking that another hunter would do that .

Could have also been a anti hunter for all we know .

Obviously I don't know the guy, and I guess few of us do, if any.  But... say, if it was a Silver Pigeon, if 10 of us contributed $20 each, we could buy him a new one.  Nice way to help out a retired brother, and maybe get a new forum member, too.

I'd be in if others are.

You would need 100 people at $20 each.  They go for over $2000
