Dry or Wet flies

Dry fly fishing for the most part yes .. unless it's a warm morning . I start with streamers and nymphs waiting for hatches . If you see rises fish dry ...

Typically, it’s a late afternoon game but that can change with so many factors - river, temp, sun or shade, type of insect. 

No need to get up too early unless you just want to go fishing. In that case, there is no bad time.

The water’s coming down and clearing by me after a few days of rain, and with the temp going up, the fish will be hungry. I’m heading out at 4:00.

Almost got crushed by a rock slide few feet to the left. Apparently this is where that halloween flood was last October. I know it looked different.

Anyway I had one fish come up to the fly(olive caddis)but didn’t take it. Saw a few breaking water but the where to far away.

Other then the rock slide it was a fun afternoon.

I tried the ripples on both side in front and back. The fish came up by the bridge piling.
Not sure I’m going back there, but I remembered a spot around the block from my house going there tomorrow.

Anyone bass fish with flies? Another guy to told me there’s mostly bass in the river and streams around. So I figured I’d give it a shot. All I have is these they came in a kit.

Smallmouth in a river is a thing. Some fly guys love it.

Green trout! I had a blast catching smallies in the St Regis river last summer

River smallmouths fight like a freight train. One of the creeks nearby has trout and bass,and a bunch of other stuff too. Hooking a bass makes you think you got a 20" brown on there.

They will go for the same streamers.

i actually preferred fly fishing for bass more than trout.   Most of the streams for trout i always fished were so brushy that fly fishing was just too tough.  But Smallies on a flyrod is a damn fine time.

It’s definitely a beautiful area. I’m not giving up on it. If they weren’t doing construction on the bridge I would’ve went to the other side and worked it down stream, but I wasn’t messing with those rock slides. Going up stream got a little funky with all the brush,but looked like a good place to fish.

Tried the sacandaga River again with no luck. I’m going to plan a trip up in June and give it another shot. That’s a beautiful river I can’t believe there’s no trout in it. Weather looks crummy the next few days.

Went down to a local pond to practice casting.When I got there fish where slurping some kinda fly off the top a few jumped out of the water.I still didn't get my dry flies yet.so I tried a nymph it took awhile but one finally grabbed it.I had him on for about three seconds then it spit the hook. Tried for another two hours then I had to leave.I'm heading back this evening. It was frustratingly fun.

Do you guys use those indictors? the guy Tom R. from orvils seems to use them in a few videos. I have to admit I liked being caught off guard.

If fish are rising to something on the surface, you could try using an unweighted nymph as an emerger.  Cast is out, let it sink a bit, and then bring it up toward the surface.  They might hit it on the way toward the surface.

I'm going to lay odds the fish were taking mosquitoes  or caddis.

That’s exactly how it happened. I’ll probably never learn the names of flies, but this is the one I got the strike on.

Looks like a pheasant tail nymph to me...love that fly and the bead head hares ear

Your not fly fishing unless you and everything on you is at some point in the day stuck in some brush. You have a had a real good day if you walk away bleeding from a thorn bush.

Said just about every fly fishing newbie... I thought every decent fly fisherman had to have a PhD in entomology.  Some actually do  .. 2 books that helped me along were  Art Flicks Stream side  Guide  and Hatches by  Caucci and Nastasi.

I went back around 4:30pm they where still swirling around,but it got to crowded for me. I did catch my first fish a sunny. I wanted it to be a trout so bad I named it “sun trout”
