pryz366
a friend of mine has a blind with shoot through windows. what are your opinions on shooting through them cause everytime he has shot through them it has been a miss. btw he uses a 300 win. mag. and i was told by a gun nut that the mess messes with the bullet when it hits it. any opinoins
Lawdwaz
Wow. The easy (nice) answer would be to have your bud take his blind to the range and set up a target at 100, 200 or whatever and see how it does COMPARED to his usual 100 200 yard groups. Pygmy
I have killed turkeys and coyotes shooting through the mesh windows, but those were with shot loads, of course, I have shot a few critters with duct tape sealing up the muzzle of my rifle, and that has not affected accuracy. It's not exactly comparing apples to oranges, though, since the gas in the barrel probably blows the tape away before the bullet ever touches it. All that said, I would be surprised if the mesh affected accuracy, but I have never done any testing to check it out. Lawdwaz's suggestion is the best one, to find out for sure. Forest Hunter
I have a blind with removable mesh. I prefer bow hunting over rifle so i think with arrows it would make less of a difference since the mesh would be cut by the broadhead and the arrow would just follow. I would rather just shoot with it off so if it did make any difference i know that if something goes wrong like any hunting attempt does i can't blame it on the mesh. I would set the rifle on one of those sled rests so the gun would point at the exact same spot each time you shot it. So you could then see if mesh did make any difference to the bullets trajectory and where it in the end hits.
growalot
my blind came with explicite instructions "Only to be used with broad heads" it tells you not to attemp shooting anything but broadheads with a cutting surface through them....and I am just asking here....why would anyone duct tape the end of their barrel and then fire it?
cynthiafu
yeah why would you duct tape your muzzle ?
Paula
for testing or when its raining?
Skillet
I wouldn't use the shoot through windows. It's hard enough for everything to come together and give you a shot, without adding one more variable into the mix.
Pygmy
Well, I can understand your asking this question, since the original premise of this thread involved hunting from a blind, where one would be somewhat protected from the weather. My hunting with tape over the muzzle of my firearm involved hunting in wet weather conditions with no shelter involved. I have spent up to two weeks at a time in the Alaska wilderness when my rifle was absolutely soaked every day, and there was simply NO shelter from the weather. However, I've also done a lot of local hunting when it was raining or snowing, and taping my muzzle helped keep the wet stuff out of my barrel..This is especially important hunting with a blackpowder rifle, since the charge is more likely to be compromised by a shot of water down the bore. nyantler
I have seen guys use electrical tape over end of their muzzleloader to keep it dry but never duct tape.
Pygmy
Joe..I have used both. Both work, but duct tape seems to stick a little better.. I have also used finger cots ( mini condoms) and cut the fingers off latex or plastic gloves and used them. Of all of them duct tape seems the most durable. Paula
i use balloons
Lawdwaz
I use electrical tape also. Rifle, shotgun & ML.
Hunterny28
I agree with the electrical tape over the barrel of a ML. I dont have to muchexpiernce with the shoot through windows. I alway have them up when I used my friends blind. I dodnt like having them down to get int he way of a shot or some other varaible to cause an issue. I will see how it works on my new blind this spring, but will end up keeping them down. I have had hunting partners have good expiernces with the shoot through windows. Like stated above, try to have him get out there and practice shooting through them.

Lawdwaz
Interesting article on this http://www.americanh...ffect-accuracy/ Although I enjoy doing a "test" like we talked about at the start of this, I guess this link puts it all to bed?? erussell and his magic fingers comes to the rescue!! Culvercreek hunt club
My blinds actually say not to shoot a gun through them (as well as expandables). I always though like was mentioned in the article the muzzle blast would melt the nylon fabric. I aslo have to believe it is louder than the dickens with the muzzle in the blind with you when you touch it off.
WNYBuckHunter
On my blind, I cut small slits in the mesh windows to poke the muzzle out of. Not because I was worried about destroying them, byt for the reason Culver mentioned, it's loud.
Doc
The mesh screens on my blinds have zippers to simply drop down out of the way. When I'm in it, the windows are always wide open. If a deer notices the difference, or can see that a window is open ....... it's already too late.
