Amazon wouldn't go bankrupt, but the profit margin would decrease, price's would increase and sales would drop. That would piss off China's elite and then they'd have to make President Biden say something about it. I wish I could wear blinders, but alas , I need to keep my eyes wide open so the US doesn't turn into your fascist dream world, where the serfs are slaves to the Gov't, live in tent cities, defecate on the streets and have to wait in line for food. Oh wait, that's already happening in the fascist state's of California, Washington and Oregon, you know, the shining star examples of the progressive bastions of freedom, or was that supposed to be Detroit ? In terms of reforms , you mention that you would like to see a fusion between capitalism and socialism ; but don’t we already have that? Would you like it to be a little more socialist then? I think our current system of government is defined as a democratic republic , with an economy that’s free market based , but also includes a lot of state Funded programs , otherwise known as social safety nets . If we went more left , we could expand our safety nets , but would it totally eliminate poverty ? I doubt it . There are those that just cannot help themselves , follow societal rules And / or are just plain unlucky . Sadly , I’m afraid that will always be the case . I am with you in terms of the inequities you do mention , though . One thing I don’t like Is that our system doesn’t allow For a “second chance “ in certain cases, probably in many . I had an ex GF whose 36 yr old son just got out of prison after doing about 7 yrs. He ABSOLUTELY could not find a job , and he tried— I know it cuz I watched him go through it. Now , I’m not saying he should be pitied or given a hand up in any way cuz that’s not fair to the rest of us who played the game right and followed all the rules , but at least give him a chance to get something , right ? I mean , Walmart wouldn’t even hire him for Christ’s sake cuz he had a record !! To me , That amounts to continued punishment even after your debt to society is paid . And what is he going to turn to as a alternative when he can’t get anything cuz the system is so arranged —crime , of course !! Unfortunately, there are no easy answers as I’m a big supporter of a criminal justice system that holds individuals accountable for their behavior — trust me — but there needs to be a better plan to get these people back on their feet and contributing to society .

You are right,we do already have that. I think it could be improved upon, like most things. I totally agree about your statement that some people will never be able to support themselves. I know a guy through my wife who was screwed grom the get go. The mother was drinking during pregnancy so he ended up with fetal alcohol syndrome. He does not connect many dots. He has a hard time holding down a job. He worked for me for a very short time and i am using the term worked loosely. He did manage to father some kids, not sure how many and i think neither is he. I have no clue what to do with people like that, but i dont think it is their choice to live like that. I also completely agree with the 2nd chance for prisoners. Debt is paid,so it should be a clean slate.

A law mandating every person eats 3 servings of Fruit and Veggies everyday would be good for everyone..... How about a law that nobody can use tobacco products.... How about a law nobody can drink alcohol..... A law that you have to wear a helmet so if you fall you don't bump your head..... A law that you have to wrap yourself in bubble wrap when you leave your house so you are less likely to get scratched walking by a tree branch..... At what point is it ridiculous to you?

Grouse
"To the economically illiterate, if some company makes a million dollars in profit, this means that their products cost a million dollars more than they would have cost without profits. It never occurs to such people that these products might cost several million dollars more to produce if they were produced by enterprises operating without the incentives to be efficiently created by the prospect of profits." ~ Thomas Sowell, South Florida Sun-Sentinel, December 26, 2003

In the old days the inmates were required to work in the prisons. Now it must be voluntary becasue that would be infringing on their "rights". I don't remember if it was this thread of another but I said many of these situations boil down to one word...."choice". No one made the guy you know do what he did and contrary to what the left believes is right, in the real world, actions have consequences. SO if he did 7 years It would have been a felony and a pretty substantial one probably. What's he done to prove he has turned his life around? Did he apply for some entry level apprenticeships? maybe your ex helped him attend a community college to try and better himself?

Jail time is not a debt to society, jail time is a “timeout” out of society after proving one is incapable of being a part of it. A jail/prison sentence doesn’t mean change, it instills change but it’s up the individual to bring that change to the outside. Some do/will others never will. There are many, many, too many programs to assist cons in getting jobs once they do their time. If someone chooses not to take advantage of it they’re probably not smart enough to stay out of prison anyways. It’s not legal for most employers to ask if you have a felony unless it’s a sex offense. However a large gap in employment usually is a dead giveaway. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Dinsdale
Building trades has plenty of guys with a record. Some decent who made a wrong turn, some who should not have been let out. Seen it all in over 30 years at it. Biggest skill is manage to show up on time, and stay off your cell phone. Both of those are unbelievably difficult for most. And then they complain about wages and not getting a raise, but that's a different topic.

They take away their right to vote but allow other rights to apply. Makes no sense to me. Inmates either have rights or have their rights suspended during incarceration. I also think they should have all their rights restored after paying their debt to society.

First, prison is supposed to be punishment for your crime and justice for your victims! Rehabilitation, if possible, is a secondary nice to have and not the purpose or primary goal. Rehabilitation is possible in some inmates, poor choice situation examples; and not others, mental illness and pathologic personality disorders. There is too much emphasis that the criminal justice system and corrections system is about justice for the criminal and rehabilitation/educating same. Society, the victims, and restitution have been lost.
