What is it that makes us always want to get into somebody else's harvest choices? Kind of pointless isn't it?2 points

You would think he would know where his brothers blind was,,,2 points

Be it a big buck, small buck, big doe, small doe. I will have a buck tag and a doe tag in my pocket this season. First thing that might come by my way and gives me a good shot will get shot at. I make NO bones about it. I hunt to kill something for the freezer, so NOTHING will get passed up. If I want to only LOOK at deer I don't need to buy a hunting license to do that.2 points

Well there is this guy who has hunted for maybe the last 65 years of his life. Camped at Indian lake, Catskills and hunted the Finger lakes. Has more stories about hunting then you would care to listen to. My 6 hour drive to camp would be filled with stories from the past, I've heard them a zillion times but when he tells them it's like the first time hearing them. He would wear his boots and gloves he brought back from Korea, the tent we camped in, from Korea. After a while he didn't wear gloves and I swear he lost the feelings in his hands but he was still able to pull the trigger. He has passed down some really nice firearms and hunting equipment, each of us has something of his. Yea he is really angry right now, this will be the first year in probably 65 that he will miss the hunting season. He actually left his bride the day after coming home from Korea to hunt at Indian lake! He had to be put in a nursing home this year because he can't walk anymore. It got to a point for 24 hr care and that could not happen at home. My brother in law has spent the last few seasons with him on opening day, getting him out to a spot so maybe they could take one more deer together. That never happened but it didn't matter he was out in the woods. I'll miss him at camp and for sure the ride up. My gun season is dedicated to my father in law Gus. We took a lot of deer together and may I'll take another one this year so I can tell some stories by his bedside. Be safe this year and bag a big one!1 point

I'll take the Saturday opener any day! If anyone feels that strongly about the Monday opener, they can still sit around camp over the weekend, BS, shoot their guns in, and just wait until Monday to hunt! LOL1 point

Was sitting on the ground, gun hunting a few years ago. I had a this year's deer come right up to me, sniff me (within 2 feet), and then slowly back away. The hardest part of the entire experience was to not make eye contact with the deer so that it didn't spook. I swear to god my heart was going to pound out of my chest.1 point

Now there's a great story! Sounds like the rut was in full swing that day. I bet if there was ever a day you were glad your camo was keeping you well hidden, it was that day, huh? LOL1 point

Any deer taken legally is is a trophy. We get too hung up on this site with other peoples ethics. Don't shoot does, Don't shoot small bucks, You should pass on this and pass on that. Only shoot mature bucks. Do you see where I am going with this? Pretty soon we should shoot nothing at all, remember the license you buy from the DEC is for hunting and you can shoot anything that is legal be it a doe, buck, small or large it's your choice. Depending what DMU you are in, so don't have someone rain on your parade if you shoot a small buck if it's what you want it's your choice period. Good luck hunting to everybody.1 point

I'm told is the real deal..... Josiah Cross, Texas Ranger, Clairmont Garrison Supervising Ranger, Ret. (a letter found in his desk drawer the morning following his retirement roast) Things that I found helpful by living this long and being honored to stand, work, friend and fight shoulder to shoulder with the Texas Rangers for 35 years. If you ever need my services, I'll be drunk in my goose blind. In the meanwhile contemplate my advice below. I will miss all of you, but don't be strangers. Show up at my cabin with your goose guns, dogs and finest bourbon. Josey Cross, T.R. Ret. The purpose of fighting is to win. The sword is more important than the shield, and skill is more important than either... The final weapon is the brain. All else is supplemental. 1. Don't pick a fight with an old man. If he is too old to fight, he'll just kill you. 2. If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck. 3. I carry a gun because a cop is too heavy. 4. When seconds count, the police are just minutes away. 5. A reporter did a human-interest piece on the Texas Rangers. The reporter recognized the Colt Model 1911 the Ranger was carrying and asked him 'Why do you carry a 45?' The Ranger responded, 'Because they don't make a 46.' 6. An old Ranger was attending an awards dinner when a lady commented on his wearing his sidearm ‘Ranger, I see you have your pistol. Are you expecting trouble?' 'No Ma'am. If I were expecting trouble, I would have brought my shotgun.' 7. Beware the man who only carries one gun. HE PROBABLY KNOWS HOW TO USE IT!!! 8. Second place in a gun fight is first loser. Hopefully the undertaker has the skills needed so your casket can be opened for your family and friends. 9. The round comes before the sound,.... Always keep a loaded chamber. 10. I was once asked by a lady visiting if I had a gun in the house. I said I did. She said 'Well I certainly hope it isn't loaded!' To which I said, of course it is loaded, it can't work without bullets!' She then asked, 'Are you that afraid of someone evil coming into your house?' My reply was, 'No not at all, I am not afraid of the house catching fire either, but I have fire extinguishers around, and they are all loaded too.' The last bit of advice I can offer,..... 11. Never get into a poker game with a guy named after a city.1 point

I am with you on the Muck Boots. Just switched over at the beginning of this bow season from a pair of Gander Mt. Guide Series boots that weren't the greatest to walk long distances in, but were warm. I am currently wearing Muck Artic Sport boots and I cannot say enough great things about them. Started out early in bow season with just a thin sock and have worked my way up to two pairs with toe warmers when needed. They are great for walking/stalking great distances too. I started wearing them after I noticed all the farmers around where I hunt had them on. I figure these guys earn their money working out in the cold , and that is all the proof I needed that these boots are top notch.1 point

Such a shame, goes back to knowing what you are shooting... Know your target and beyond...1 point

I understand that you are looking for a reliable processor. in my opinion the best person is you yourself..dont know your situation and whether you have a garage or the time to do it but, i find that this is just another part of the whole hunting experience for me and i enjoy doing it just as much as i enjoy persuing, cooking and consuming the animal...1 point

As long as a person plays by the rules, it is a personal choice what to and what not to harvest. Who am I or anyone else to say it is wrong or right. That is why we have laws. Ones personal choice is just that, a personal choice. I guess after the years go by the thrill of the kill diminshes and the joy of the hunt takes over, which has me looking for something I want. Does that make me more ethical or a better hunter umm nope. Again it is a personal choice. One guy I hunt with has been hunting 15 years. He has harvested a few does over the years. This year he shot a 5 point 135 pound buck at my camp. He was proud as can be, and I was very happy for him. Would I have shot that deer? Probably not. Was I glad he did and he was happy with it. You bet I was.1 point

Doewacker, lmao, your right. After you've shot a few, you find you don't use words like "could have if i wanted to". All 15 of them may have busted you on the draw or jumped the string or you may have punched the trigger on that live target. Nothings for sure til you got them on the gambrel..1 point

hahahaha I love guys like you, never killed one but could have. You know what is good practice for killing a big one, killing a medium sized one first.1 point

My first was at 16 years old. A spike horn I dropped at 40 yards. Gutted it myself, local guy came by and congratulated me on the kill and gut job. On my drag out met an old timer. He to gave me the thumbs up and asked if he could retrieve the heart! The next day I went out without a gun tagging along with my friend. We met the old timer that afternoon, he thanked me for the heart and asked "where's you gun son?" I told him remember the deer from yesterday? He looks at me and says "go get another!" My spike horn was a trophy to me and the old timer was priceless!1 point

Dave, very well said! My first was a doe. She was a trophy to me. I have her hide hanging on my wall and a gun rack made out of her hooves. I'm a meat hunter 100%. Doe or buck don't matter to me. As far as my buck tag, well, if it happens it happens. If not so be it. I'd rather have meat in the freezer than a rack on the wall. God willing, I have plenty of hunting years ahead of me to fill those buck tags.1 point

Good comments all. I remember my first deer after 3 years of hunting. I was just a teen and I shot a button at 87 yards with a shotgun and dropped it. While I am gutting it a guy comes up the trail from down below. He says to me yea he went buy me a bit a go and he was just a little pup so I let him go. No congratz or nothing. In a manner my mom raised me better than after he turned and walked away I flipped him the bird and finished up and dragged him out as happy as can be. Never cared a whole lot about what people I do not know and respect thought. Still don't!! I am always happy for any safe, legal hunter who gets a deer, any deer.1 point

Every Deer killed is a trophy to the person who shot it!! please keep this in mind when you look a some 14 year olds or (anyone's) button buck, or doe or 6pt yearling. If it doesn't meet your own personal standards, congradulate the person in a sincere mannor and just walk away.... I get sick seeing some teliing the person who shot it what did you shoot that dog for? Hey they wanted it they shot it!! Belittling someone only seems to cause more problems than it solves. Now if its to you own members at camp a little razzing may be in order in good taste1 point
