Lot of pros & cons regarding fixed vs mechanical. Original selling point of mechanicals was they flew about the same as your practice field points. Now a days, the big draw is the larger cutting diameter mechanicals (Rage) can achieve. Of course, you're talking about a slit (2 blade Rage) as opposed to triangular fixed broadhead wound. Which is better......? Have heard complaints about mechanicals not functioning as advertised or not getting a pass thru on angled shots. Ill stick with my fixed blade and avoid any possible mechanical malfunctions at the moment of truth.2 points

First of all, I don't want to turn this into an antler restriction debate, please!!! One of my favorite things about running trail cameras over the summer is being able to watch individual bucks over multiple years. To me, it's just as fun, fulfilling and rewarding as actually hunting. It's a fascinating process to see a buck mature. This year I'm really struggling to get pics of the better bucks in the area. There are a few bucks that I've been watching for several years. This guy is one of them. Last year @ 2 years old he was a nice wide 8-pt. He really blossomed this year @ 3.5...even though something went haywire with his right antler. He could be a real monster if he makes it through another season. However, seeing how this is NY and not some managed property in the midwest, I don't think that I could refrain from sending an arrow at this dude if given the opportunity.1 point

Killing "or culling" bucks from any herd because his antlers aren't meeting your standards is NOT deer management.. it is however trophy management... they are not the same thing. One is based on YOUR standards.. the other is based on herd health and balance. The buck looks to be a healthy buck of at least 3 years old with a big 6 point frame... shooting him for "deer" management purposes would be pointless... I would take him simply because he is a good mature big racked 6-pt... six points that size don't appear too often.1 point

Welcome aboard! Great site and info on many topics about hunting NY state. Great people too! Don't be afraid to post we like the extra input at any skill level. We cover a lot of differant subjects and tend to disagree on things which is always fun!!! Translation: We argue a lot because we have so many differant subjects from youth hunts to Blaze Orange to Cross Bows not to mention antler restrictions. Point: We(Hunters) are all dominant type personalities and tend to get a little bit over the edge sometimes, dont take it personal, we are all friends at the end of the day as a united hunting front wanting to preserve our treasured rights as our four fathers did... Does not matter if you are hunting squirels in the back yard or deer in some deep remote location if you are looking for good information you came to the right site! Hope you enjoy it as much as I do...1 point

Yep, he's on my friend's dairy farm. I assure you it's the same deer. I've been watching him since he was a yearling in 2010. I got pics of him after season in 2010...all through the summer/fall of 2011...after season in 2011 and found one of his sheds this spring too. Deer, like people are all individuals and you can tell them apart by certain facial features.1 point

My Uncle had one in a 94. I think it had the big lever loop and the saddle ring. I always loved that gun as a young kid and maybe my young memory isn't right. My cousin got it when my Uncle died and he sold it for gas and beer money.....cousin never hunted.1 point

I had a gray squirrel in a Havaheart yesterday morning. No need to kill him at this point so he got released on good behavior, but still on parole.......1 point

It's high because the # of tags issued is much larger than the #of tags actualyl filled. It's a relationship allotment.1 point

Its been scientifically proven that efforts to effect the gene pool in a wild heard of deer are fruitless. The only way it can be done effectively is behind fences. I believe phade was referring to the original poster calling this deer a "management buck" which is a term high fence operations use for "cull" bucks. It gets thrown around alot on TV shows.1 point

some phones have a slot for a mini sd card. use the card if you have a slot and you just plug it into your computer to down load and you dont loose quality.1 point

I would take him out. Not for management reasons but more for the fact that he's a big boy and a really good sized 6. Plus u can't eat his antlers anyway. Goodluck. Bill.1 point

I would definatly take the camera and leave a nice note saying that you have it and call them. Tell them a place where you can meet so you can see who it is and get a pic if possible. Then tell them that you don't let people hunt your land and they where tresspassing. From there you can give the camera back or tell them it is at the police or with the DEC. Sometimes it is better to be nice than mean. I say this because if he slipped in on your land once he/she can do it again and if he wants wreck your stuff or take it. If you were nice and he just made a mistake you might make a new friend out of it. I know there are the Aholes out there too but sometimes being nice is the way to go.1 point
