  1. Nice spike there... A well shot spike is better than an un recovered 10...12..16 pt buck every day.......point...every recovered deer is a trophy

  2. My local gun club as well as the gun dog club and the DEC are sponsoring a youth pheasant hunt today. No charge to the youth. Birds are supplied by the DEC, lunch and ammo by the club and good bird dogs to hunt over. It is a great day for all. I just hope we do not disturb the bow hunters too much.

  3. None of these stupid laws do one single thing to prevent any type of crime, and the politicians who pass these laws know it. What they also know is, if they can make it next to impossible for gun owners to legally buy, possess, or shoot your guns and ammo, you will either give up owning them, or pay thousands defending yourself in court on bogus gun law charges. Hell the gun owners and retailers don't even know what the laws are. Often times the cops don't know either! But they will arrest you on the presumution of breaking a law and let you pay a lawyer to prove you didn't break one. I've seen this scenario play out many times involving members of the NJ Arms Collectors Club. The time to beech about these laws is prior to them being passed into law. But some folks think they are OK and seem "reasonable" when they are proposed because they only listen to the sales pitch the politicians spew when they propose the bill. They need to take the time to look into the possible negative, or abusive, effects these laws will have on them and educate themselves on their threats to our personal liberties. The government wants to control gun owners and the leftist politicians hate your guts. Gun owners better start to realize that. I don't hold my breath expecting that to happen though.

  4. Is there a early season on them? or do we need to wait for the migration. Seriously I really don't get this AR thing. Do i like to shoot a buck with a nice rack? you bet. Do a pass a bunch of spikes croch horns and little basket rack 6 or 8 points? affirmative. When the season is drawing to a close do i put the hammer down on said deer that i let walk a month, week or days earlier? that would be yes as well. My family burns through venison like no tomorrow. Generally i can put enough in the freezer without dropping the first thing that has bone on its head. That being said its a luxury and my choice. One hunter should not be restricted just so its easier for another hunter to wrap his hands around a nice set of antlers. If you don't like some ones hunting style or view learn to bite your tongue.

  5. I agree, starting threads to battle will Not be tolerated... It's trolling at best. I shut down the other AR thread because we don't need the drama and there were 2 other threads on the matter. If the OP continues with trolling and starting arguments here, that will get shut down too. Your new to the site so before you start up threads to start fights and conflicts, I'm telling you to think twice. Thank you

  6. Ethics don't sell. Morality doesn't sell, The big buck down is all that matters to tv shows anymore, They have gotten so bad i don't even watch them , When they hit a deer the night before and then talk about jumping it up and coming back in the morning, Then they show a very stiff carcass laying there, its pathetic, Its all about the dollar and getting sponsors, scent lock, rage, moultrie, Camo companies, this broad head is better than that one, Its all bull crap, every person needs to be them selves and decide for themselves what works for them, Not what some tv host did on tv, Like Craig Morgan using a crossbow to kill a speed goat at 85 yds its simply irresponsible of them to show things along those lines, Every illegal thing done while hunting or every animal that survives a bad shot that gets seen with an arrow sticking out of it reflects poorly on all hunters not just the hunter who did it, We are scrutinized every minute of every day and the non hunting population only See's the bad done, not all the good that comes out of the sport,

  8. A lot of gun owners think unless the government decides to knock on everyone's door one day and demand all the guns, they aren't trying to take them from you. Nothing could be more wrong. Laws are constantly being passed that insideously encroach on every aspect of your gun rights, to the point where it will be impossible to avoid breaking some gun laws just by owning one. If you don't show up on the government's radar when you break a rule, you will get away with it. But if you go through a divorce, get pulled over on the way to the range or hunting, or any number of innocent little things, you may find a cop telling you that you are under arrest for something you had no clue was a violation of the law. Then if you are convicted of a felony, (which most gun law violations are) you will be heavily fined, possibly jailed, and completely stripped of your 2nd Amendment rights and all of your guns must be turned in to the court at that time. This is what happened at Ruby Ridge in Idaho as well as the Branch Davidian complex in Waco, TX. The government never expected these people to refuse to comply though, and because these cases blew up into national news, everyone heard about them. But there are hundreds of similar cases every year that you do not hear about because the victim of the law chose to comply, many times because the goverment offered to lessen, or even drop all penalities and fines, if they did. What really slays me is MOST GUN OWNERS SIDE WITH THE GOVERNMENT WHEN IT ABUSES A GUN OWNER AND BELIEVE HE MUST HAVE BEEN A FELON IF HE GOT ARRRESTED AND CHARGED AS ONE BY THE GOVERNMENT. They have no clue how the gun laws, designed to strip gun owners of their rights, are really designed to work. The government is NOT your friend. The government does NOT like gun owners. Gun owners better begin to wake up to this fact.

  11. Columbine: Okay Carjacking: The invention of the word? Yes. The act for which the term was coined? Do you predate the invention of the automobile? Gang Violence: No People blowing up federal buildings: At home or abroad? Sure, he failed, but Guy Fawkes I'm pretty sure predates you by quite some time. This is nothing but the product of fear mongering over what someone could do with a firearm being hammered onto and into us for decades. Prohibition of alcohol saw the largest rise in organized crime in American history. Gangsta's of today have nothing on Gangsters of Capone, Lansky and Schultz's gangs. Gun control isn't about guns. It's about control. As for the question, I'd guess it has to do with trying to CONTROL who has access to pistol ammunition. Consider, it is unlawful for a felon to possess ammunition. However, there is no mechanism in place whatsoever to prevent him from walking into a store and purchasing ammunition, paying with cash, and having a virtually untraceable felony transaction. Right in a commercial retail establishment, not in some back alley buying rounds out of the trunk of Tony Pepperoni's Cadillac.

  13. There really is no "broad brush" right population.. everything depends on how many deer the area can support... as far as buck:doe ratios are concerned.. 1:1 is optimum but probably never achievable here in NY with hunter attitudes... if the ratios ever got to 3:1 that would be quite an accomplishment. Hunters scream that there aren't a lot of bucks or any quality bucks in their area but are not willing to do what it takes to get there... For every 100 deer... why would hunters want 80 does and 20 bucks... when they could have 60 does and 40 bucks?

  14. scientifically all whitetail deer ar esupose to be 8 pts. they grow bigger just as you develop muscles as you grow a 12 year old kid is like a 1.5 year old buck. 2.5 is like a 16 year old ,3.5 22year old . 4.5 is like a late 20's early 30's adult. A lot of breeding is done by 1.5 yearolds, and as the bucks get older less is done by the respective age classes. it is not nessary to have mature deer in the herd for rproductive purposes. As for the number of deer it is irrelevant, how many hunters do you have per square mile? a large take will hurt more than ar's can help as you will highgrade the herd quickly. the giant 4pts and 6pts in my area are proof of that..untouchable by 4 pt a side. my area 640 acres has a buck take of almost 12 per square mile. every 8 and better is shot. leaving inferior genetic less and 7pts remain to grow old. You are much better off learning to judge a deer's age on the hoof try to shoot 4.5 year olds regardless of horn size. that is the main reason i am against mandatory ar's in ny. we did our volentarily and took us several more years to straighten it back out. qdm is not ar's it is an entire method of habitat and deer/ non game management. Stop thinking of ar's as the salvation open your eyes and look at the whole picture!!!

  16. I am not JetMec and Jetmec is not me. Didnt say I dont know him though. We are definitely on the same page. I shot a few spikes in my day also, but havent since 1999. I own a small piece of property that is abundant with deer. Its a much different style of hunting I guess because I see young bucks almost everytime im in the woods. Sounds to me like most of you are hunting much tougher pieces of property. I dont really care what you shoot, but I wish my area would implement the AR program because we have way too many fill the tag hunters who kill all the young bucks I pass up. Maybe I should start killing them all with my bow, so come opening day of gun there is nothing but doe and button bucks left. What do you think JetMec?

  20. So lets see between your two member names you have a grand total of 39 post and out of 39 post here is 14 quotes from you. Seems to me between some of them telling us what to shoot is more than an opinion and then theres the disrespectful crap towards fellow hunter. Yeah its a sure great start to getting your "opinion" out there and respected. You are doing a great job keep up the great work on preaching pro AR. I cant tell you if Im for it or against it. But I can tell you that if its people who spew crap like this that are for it then it sure is a strike against the pro side for me to side with such crap coming from a pro ar's mouth thats for certain. Your stance can not be respected with the garbage you post. I would say sorry but Im not the one whos strategy to get there "opinion" across with utmost disrespect towards fellow hunters.

  24. Sam: Just because somebody has a degree does not make them all-knowing and can't be bought. And Gary Alt was a hatchet man, did his job and like all hatchet men...was paid and given the golden parachute. If you hunted Pa. you would see that the hervbaceous cover and mast crops can support many times more deer than are here. Two other factors: one is the addition of mego..macro food plots...acres of turnips, clover, brassicas...and one deer. Also, the mild winters have taken out of the equation any deer kill mortality. No, what is driving the issue from my perspective is two things...one is elitism from our brother deer hunters who think that they have a higher plane of ethics than somebody who hunts because they need the meat, and two, the timber interests that are concerned with the way that deer shape the future of the forest. Pa. hunters got sold a bill of goods by being promised that AR's and the necessary depletion of the doe herd (to let the bucks grow even bigger horns...) that "Joe Hunter" would have his day and see a trophy buck. I drank the KoolAid too. I thought, let's see, let's give it a try...we can always go back. But the timber interests and the stubborn trophy hunters are standing in the way of going back. And what I fear... not so much for me,...but for the young Pa. hunters...they are not going to go out there and sit for days and not see a deer. They are going to quit and get on their computers....

  30. Sorry, but you are wrong about what the sides are. There are many guys that I know that have very high standards for themselves, and love to hunt and shoot big bucks that do not agree with mandatory ARs. Also, stop fooling yourself, ARs are not in place in Illinois or many of the other big buck states. There are other reasons in those states that bucks get as big as they do. You dont even have to look to other states, look at Western NY. We have no ARs out here, and the same long season as the rest of the state and we have alot of bruiser bucks. Please, explain how and why. You say you have bad genetics in your area, well how is AR going to solve that little problem for you? I dont think youre an idiot, I just think you have some of the facts wrong on this subject. Just my opinion.

  31. The difference would be that he wouldn't be 1.5... he would have another year of age and experience making him a bit harder to see or kill therefore increasing his chances of reaching physical maturity... my point though is that the 3 on a side rule is not designed to produce big bucks... just to protect the majority of the yearlings to give bucks a leg up on reaching an older age. Restrictions need to be much higher to produce trophy deer on a large scale
    1 point
  32. It can't be forced on you.. because you don't do it... I have been voluntarily passing on young bucks for almost 20 years... a 3 points on a side AR would never be forcing me to do anything... it would just be protecting most of the yearlings... the mandate is designed because most don't and won't voluntarily practice AR.. so the mandate is the only way to protect yearling bucks.. so if in fact that is what the goal is then that is the only way to accomplish it... NOW.. if the goal of AR's was to keep hunters from bickering with one another that would be a foolish mandate because we all know that wouldn't work...LOL

  34. It is true that does do not need to be harvested every where in NY and in areas with few deer doe harvest needs to be limited. ARs are about buck age structure which is improved dramatically by not shooting yearling bucks. And of course this should be instituted in the entire southern zone where it is supported by the majority of Deer hunters. Common sense if you do not shoot little ones they get older. Very Good Article on ARs http://www.eveningtribune.com/topstories/x1249727649/Are-antler-restrictions-the-wave-of-the-future-in-NYS?zc_p=3

  37. I look at it differently in that I think the laws are designed to make hunters take a better look at what they're shooting at before pulling the trigger... if you are not sure, don't shoot... I don't feel it is the laws fault that hunters refuse to take the time to make a proper identification or are unwilling to let a deer walk to make sure the law is not broken. It's become to common place to blame someone other than oneself for failing to do the right thing. Just because you have a gun that can shoot 200 yards, doesn't mean you should be shooting something that you can't identify. The remedy for your senario is not to do away with the law... the remedy would be get a scope if you want to shoot that far or just don't shoot that far. There will be other opportunities. Definitely not worth breaking the law over. I know you meant that there are those out there that will make the "mistake" you discribed... my point is that it is not an accident or a mistake, just plain irresponsibilty. I feel it would happen regardless of AR's and that it has happened before current AR's with the original 3inch law. I seems to be built into some hunters DNA.. regardless of the law.
