  1. BTW, the main point of this thread was not defending people standing over steaming deer at 8PM. It was carrying a loaded rifle out of the woods after hours. I never unload my gun until I'm back at my truck. I've had a couple of close encounters with bears, and if a coyote decided to cross my path and I had a safe shot, I wouldn't want to miss the opportunity. No one here is condoning shooting deer outside of legal hunting times.

  2. If there is no law then there is no violation. Prima facie deals with the evidence to prove there was an illegal act. To say there doesn't need to be a law for someone to get a ticket for breaking the law is ridiculous.

  4. Well I was up north for the Deer regular season opener. We knew there had been a ton of bear sign from the previous weekend of Muzzle loading. It was a very quite Saturday opener. not much shooting around the area. we set up a drive for the one big swamp one the property that is adjacent to a corn field on the next property. My cousin and I were drivers. Well I saw this fella running around the outside of the drive about 20% through the drive. I had no idea they could run that fast...not quite as fast as the handloads for my -06 (first ime I was able to try them on game). well if they are right about the % to add to get live weight, the live weight would have been around 240-250 young male. Not a monster and not much meat off a bear either but It has been 100% corn fed based on the large crop circles in the middle of the corn field. I am giving the hide to a taxidermist I use, Hope to get a discount on the next deer mount. (no way the wife would go for another bear mount and I have a Daughter that is headed to college...LOL)

  5. Anyone who would take a shot at you and say your not a hunter because your a liberal has a seriously flawed argument. They might not agree with your stance on something but that doesn't make you any less of a hunter. I have to applaud you at your commitment to get out and hunt. Keep in mind though its all about choice. You can choose where to live, work, play, hunt (so on and so forth). I find myself frustrated and want to complain about my situation (I have even done it on here before) but usually i end up stepping back and realize how good i have it. My wife's cousin passed at 26 on Saturday after a year and a half battle with leukemia. Kind of puts things in perspective. Make sure your spending time with your kids.

  6. Come on man, you keep adding stuff to these circumstances that would warrant a ticket. First it was a gun and bullets in a slow moving car, then you add a complaint of shots after dark, then a gutted, steaming deer, now its ungutted with 2 guys in the car. You just keep throwing crap at the wall until something sticks. Baiting.

  8. Sogaard My hats off to all you guys that put in that kind of effort to go hunting. It shows a lot of commitment. I guess your right that when it comes to hunting some of us have it easy but it is not without it's costs. Think about it. Water downstate comes from the faucet, waste down the sewer, garbage picked up at the curb, paid fire protection and medical emergency and for some even if the light bulbs go out or heat goes off you call maintenance. Have you ever pulled a well pump in the middle of the winter or have the well go dry in the summer? Ever have to dig up a septic tank or pay to have it done when everything that is supposed to go down does not? I pay to have my garbage picked up, haul my own trash to the dump, clean and fix my own boiler, sharpen blades, fix chain saw, cut trees, plow snow, mow fields, and weld stuff when it breaks. And I pray I never need the volunteer fire department or EMS, but thank god for the good people who put their lives at risk to be there if I do. We have to worry that the land we "own" and pay taxes though the nose for, with no public services, will either be contaminated with chemicals to extract gas from shale, become the home for foreign owned windmills that tower over our homes, or be taken from us outright through eminent domain. I drive an hour each way to work every day with gas prices four dollars plus a gallon and have no access to public transportation. With that said, we're a hardy bunch up here for sure and pretty self reliant and I wouldn't have it any other way. Yup, I can literally wake up in the morning, get my hunting clothes on, be out the door and on my stand in less than 30 minutes. But with all there is to do and worry about to live up here sometimes I'm so tired I just look out the window convince myself why "they won't be moving today" and snuggle back to sleep. LOL!

  12. Try Stoeger then, cheap gun but might fit your needs. Other wise you are SOL unless you increase your price range. A good one can be found for $700-$1000

  14. That's funny...apparently rocks have many purposes...My ...God rest his soul...archery guy once told me that..... taking a hand full of small stones with you in a tree stand can make a dull day active.. If you are in an area with oaks....just occasionally drop a stone or two in the leafs...any unseen or bedded deer with in hearing distance will eventually show up....He said it works around apple trees as well...

  15. Doe, don't forget we are black, so no need to put a bullet thru yourself to claim a disability. We are already on the "welcome" list by our skin color alone. LOL Although maybe with a disability we could get use of his cabin also?

  16. I don't drag by the neck, I carry them out on a alter made of fine cloth and nice prefume before I throw a celebratiion feast in the deers honor for its noble sacrifice. THen I hang it by the neck and hack the $h1T out of it with a knife!!

  17. I agree, COngratualtions and I'm sure you are a good shot but you start factoring in unknowns like her jumping the bowstring and that narrow window that you did hit becomes a wounded deer. Once again congratulations but I avoid those risky shots.

  18. Just make sure to drag it by it legs. I've been told that it's disrespectful to throw a rope around it's neck. LOL

  21. This thread has been amusing the hell out of me. I can't believe so many of you "dead red" hunters are so willing to roll over and not stand up for personal liberties and rights when it comes to an ECON officer. Remember, if you follow the chain of command up far enough, that ECON officer works for OBAMA! Maybe that will inspire you.

  22. Oh no doubt...be be assured...I have studied up on my rights since.......I'll allow a cop to arrest me before ever just opening my trunk on demand...But he had best have a realy good reason to....it's the principle ...they know the 90% of the ppl will do what ever they say just to get rid of them...BS Grandpa was a NYS supreme court JUDGE...a lawyer from a family of lawyers...said the biggest problem is citizens don't spend the time to know their rights.... police over step there duties and JP's should never reside in the towns that they hold court in...and never take a bench trial... Of course that was before all the criminal justice police shows...lol now a days...whether right or wrong....ppl are much more in tune to their POSSIBLE... as it were...rights

  23. As long as there are no rounds in any magazine or the chamber, he cant be ticketed for anything. Comparing that to a drunk in a vehicle with keys in the ignition is apples and oranges, that scenario is illegal period. Its no wonder to me that LEO, judges and courts get away with some of the things they do that are not within the law. Some of you guys just bend over and take anything they try to give ya. Sheesh.

  25. Tell him that trapping season is coming up and you would hate to have one of his dogs get caught in a fox or coyote trap, while they're out running loose. Make it sound like you're looking out for him and his dogs...

  26. Try the Agway in Binghamton they carry mucks for good prices, I picked up a pair of arctic pro's last yr that are outstanding. Got them for 100$ which is cheaper than any where else.

  27. Ok so first... Don't hate on the gut job lol. We cut them down the ribs to drain better. And second... Don't hate on the shot. (lol again). 30 yard shot slipped in front of her shouler as she was quartering toward me. Hammered her with the Rage 2 blades, slung from the PSE Dream Season which opened her up damn good. Got lung and almost came out the other side mid way down her body. found 8 inches of my arrow broken off. She went 60 yards and fell down about 5 times before she piled up.

  29. Oh no shooter, I understand 100%! Having deer hanging out in the back yard is an AWESOME feeling! There's a real sence of accomplishment when even the wildlife like to call your place "home" I'm not trying to take anything away from your post at all. Beautifull pad, and I can see why the deer enjoy it as much as you do!

  31. I do this too......makes a sound in a different direction from where you are. Gives me enough time to swap scopes to a red dot, change ammo to coyote rounds so I can walk out.

  33. Coming from a guy in the food biz that is sound advice and spot on. Just try to avoid unneeded risks with meat of any kind, cook to proper temp and or cool to proper temp and enjoy.

  34. I do the same thing regarding noting the times when the first shot is fired. I have to say that most of the time, I have absolutely no idea of what they are shooting at or how they can even determine that what they are shooting at is actually a deer. That just gives you an idea of what things might be like if there was not some kind of reasonable limit regarding start and stop times.

  42. Just to interject, the way in which the CPI is currently calculated is complete bullshit. Staple items like FOOD AND ENERGY are not included in the consumer common basket. Now I don't know about you, but I know that aside from my mortgage, feeding my family and heating my home are a pretty sizeable portion of my non-discretionary spending budget. Also, they represent an ever growing portion thereof. Notice the price of food going up, but the net weight or volume of the product purchased going down? That's an inflationary effect, I'm sure you'll agree. However, it's not calculated as part of the CPI, ergo the calculated inflation rate is artificially low. Sorry, but you can take that "inflation is less than 3%" bullshit and put it where it belongs. Out back in the manure pile.

  43. So I went out Saturday morning in the freezing cold. I fully intended on getting in a stand up on the mountain in a stand of oak's. But about 200 yrds from my stand I ran into a group of doe in another stand of oaks that busted out in all directions making all sorts of noise. I stood there contemplating wether or not to just give up and go home as the wind was in the wrong direction to hunt this stand. Instead I went back to the main trail and dropped all unneccesary equipment and stripped off my jacket and sweater and just went with the t-shirt and longjohns. And started a slow stalk up the opposite side of the mountain. It didnt take long to run into some deer wandering around under another oak tree. I tried a few doe and fawn bleats which got there attention but none ever presented me with a shot and then they moved on. About 20 min later I caught more movement and saw a doe feeding along a trail. I hid in some small trees and grass and waited till she walked by about 25 yrds away and sealed the deal with an arrow thru the lungs. Spent the day cutting her up and havent gone back out yet. But have a freezer full of meat.
