  5. Don't do it.I ain't giving second chances.I pay a lot to hunt this land.Put a lot of time in to scouting and controlling my scent.I put a lot into my entry and exit of my area with controlling my scent and sounds,so the deer aren't spooked out or get a pattern. I aint taking your silly excuses like i am looking for my buddies stand, lost track of the boundries,"oh this is posted?",I "had" permission last yr,Im tracking a deer, and so on. I have DEC and OC sheriffs office in speed dial.If you hide your back tag i will take a picture of your face for them. If you don't have blood on you arrow STAY OFF MY LEASE!!!OR PAY THE JUDGE!!!!! If you are LEGIT tracking a deer......Show me the bloody arrow and i will help. During gun season..................DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT!!!!!!!! I have my 12 yr old there hunting with a bow. Stay out...........You will be charged with trespassing even if you are tracking a wounded deer.No excuses during gun.You should be a better shot.sorry.If you need to Call the land owner. His name is on the posted signs!

  16. i dont know how you were taught or any other hunter here but i was not taught to let arrows fly at un ethical angles. if the deer is calm give him time to give you the right shot. Im sorry, there is nothing ethical about slinging an arrow through a deers mouth, you agree???? would you consider throwing an arrow at a deer quartering to you? WITH YOUR BOW? and you are right there are more then one kill zone, each having a lessor percentage of 1 killing a deer and 2 recovering it with a good blood trail. people miss deer all day long and wound them, granted... i think this is a prime example of a shot that should not have been taken, period. WTH are you aiming at with an angle like that? that is what you call a hope and prayer. hope you hit it good enough to kill and pray you find it. mo one is claiming to be en "ELITE" hunter, its very funny how guys are quick to think someones is portraying themself to be better then someone else when someone has something to say about a bad shot decision. If you think we should all be happy your wrong. the only thing im sure we are happy is the deer died and he was able to make the harvest other wise, CRAP SHOT....

  19. OK this HAS to be the funniest thing ive heard in a LONG time lol lol us deer hunters sitting for hours in treestands can get some awful strange thoughts goin thru our heads lol

  20. AND you opened it and were let down..hehe

  21. Well first let me say stuff happens, we all know that. Second, none of us were there to witness it so who knows what angle the shot was. He never really said in the other thread what the angle was just that it was a bad shot and the deer may have jumped the string and he was aiming for the chest. A deer is fully capable of doing a complete 180 by the time an arrow travels 30 yards. As far as the pic, that was and is bad taste and I see no reason why it needs to get posted in this thread either, those types of images are not good for our sport. Shame on you for reposting it here. Also if it was a poor shot selection made on purpose than you can question ethics, if it was just a case of something bad happening how can you call into question a hunters ethics. Bottom line, none of us were there and don't know what went down.

  23. I find it hard to believe he jumped the string but then i think back to the second buck i ever shot at. I was sitting in a stand along a tractor path in front of a big block of apples on my left and big thicket of spruce on my right that deer bed in. I had laid down a scent line walking down the tractor trail through the bedding area to my stand. I had also stuck a scent canister on one of the apple trees at 15 yards. I was sitting in my stand watching a couple bucks running a doe in the apples when i caught movement out of the corner of my eye. I turned slowly to see a huge 6 point with a snow white rack nose to the ground following my trail. As he passed my stand i drew when his head was behind some grass nose still to the ground. He stopped at my scent wick and as soon as his nose touched it he stiffened right up, legs locked and hair standing up (he smelled me on the wick). He was at 15 yards quartering away. I took the shot. Shooting my dads 1973 Fred Bear Whitetail II i watched as the buck dropped and loaded his legs to jump and had he jumped forward i would have cleanly missed. Instead he pivoted back to his right directly into the path of the arrow. I watched as the arrow drove right into the base of his neck / upper back just above the shoulder blades (spine). Only he didn't drop (obviously impacted bone but did not sever the spine). I watched as he ran up hill 40 yards to the other tractor trail and stood there for 15-20 seconds with my arrow sticking straight up out of the back of his neck. I am not sure if the broad-head even fully penetrated. He then took off back down the trail he came. I tracked him for 400 yards before completely loosing blood. Now i am sure that anyone that saw that arrow in that deer would have thought what a horrible shot. Who the $%#% would have taken that shot. But i am also sure that i am not the only one who would have shot thinking that they had a good opportunity to harvest a magnificent deer. I learned a lesson, don't shoot a spooked deer. And for the record he did live. He was shot the next season opening weekend of gun season by the neighbor and was now a 4.5 year old 7pt. The neighbor wondered how i knew he had a broad head wound between his shoulder blades. I replay that scene every year while i sit in a stand.

  26. bottom line is... the possibility for things to go wrong with a shot like that is inconceivable.... lucky is lucky, and thank god in this instance for the deers sake he was lucky and not wandering around with half a nose or missing an eye, or even worse, dead days later and never found...

  36. I drop things al the time. But years ago I bought a little device that you can lower on your rope or haul string and it will pick up almost anything. Not sure where i got it but a search on google you can probably find something similar. It has four springy wires that fold into its body when pulled out can hook into any loose things like hats or gloves or straps. Its main body has a strong magnet in it which will pick up metal objects. It has not failed me yet. As far as the urge to go, it wont help you there.. Good luck rest of season. JIM

  38. That was me this morning.the "BRANCH"But i saw the branch and i couldn't get a clean shot.It walked right toward me instead of into the clean shot zone. Then at 8 yrs he looked up at me and took off.Two more steps and i would have had a kill zone shot.If i would have ducked down lower when i was drawd i coulda have got him in the heart at about 17 yards,.But i was gambling on him walking left instead of coming to me.The vanilla i sprayed on the leaves is what messed it up.He was following the scent.LOL.He was and ugly rack kinda but would have been my biggest. But i aint a trophy hunter.I am glad in a way he didn't present that shot tho.Next yr he will be impressive with that split brow tine if he makes it.

  39. Ive cleaned out as much as I felt needed to be. If the site owner cleans it further, thats up to him. Again, this thread is for harvest pics and the associated stories. Congrats and attaboys are fine, but lets try to keep it on topic. As has been said before, foul language, etc will result in a suspension and possible banning from the site. Please abide by the rules, we do not want to babysit, suspend or ban anyone, but will do so if need be. Here is a copy of the rules for those that didnt read them before... http://huntingny.com/rules

  42. Set your stand where u want if you happen to see another hunter in the other stand, tell them you are the only one with permission as far as you know according to the landowner. I'd also lock your stand. You might find out it is another neighbor that hunts there knowing that the owner doesnt care or maybe they asked years ago and the owner has forgotton. Some times its better to make friends than enemys. You may need to recover your game from another property and it would burn the bridge before it can be built.

  44. Well, whatever .... That sort of thing is between the two of you. I just appreciated someone who dropped all the different buzz-words and labels and such and simply told it like it is for a change. Everybody thinks they have to have some kind of label. I don't want to be speaking for him, but basically what I got from his message was "Just hunt, and don't worry about what category you fit into and how you differ from other hunters". Sounds like some good advice to me. Hopefully we really do have more in common than what divides us inspite of how we like to dwell on the differences in these forums.

  45. You can't know that his genetics are bad... the same type of antler deformity occurs from an injury to the opposite side of his body... or even an injury to the pedicle of that antler... neither will produce offspring with the same antler configuration.I'm not killing him cuz his tail sticks up!

  46. Keva, I think he has a strong opinion about deer management in general, and he just didn't like the topic. Nyantler has a lot of useful information and ideas. Just easy to get riled up on these forums. I am just more laid back with deer hunters in general. I hunt how I like, and shoot or don't shoot what I feel makes my hunting better, If someone is happy with a 1 1/2 year old buck every year, I am not going to talk down to them or tell them to not shoot them. Every hunter has fun their own way. Hell, I know a couple guys that come down to a neighboring camp for opening week of gun season and are lucky to hunt a day the whole week. They sit around camp and drink, play cards, and eat high on the hog all week. They are always happy when we stop in to shoot the bull, and are having a great time. Hunting is made up of all kinds of people. That's is what some people forget.

  49. If a person buys a tag and is legal they can fill the tag what ever way they see fit, stop worrying about how and what others do. Basically I'm saying, just hunt.

  50. I would think with a plot that big, if they can strip it that fast, you may be above carrying capacity. Time to kill a bunch of Doe. Your buck racks will get bigger too with less competition for food.
