As long as you know whats in the background and are being safe, you are fine. You cannot tell me that you have never had a bullet cross a property line and be truthful about it. I dont care what the Encon guy said, they are not infallible. Using that logic, its trespassing every time I mow my lawn and a rock or leaf goes over the property line. Good gravy.2 points

that's quite a statement, my grandfather and his family hunted in Maine for years using buckshot and probably killed more deer than those people saw , but still wouldn't recommend it to anyone as the optimum deer weapon.1 point

So what is it about the 30-30 that makes it so inferior ? It has accounted for tons of venison over the years, as have many calibers with similar ballistics, like the .32 Win special, the .25, .30 and 32 Remington, the 25-35 Win. the .44 Magnum, lesser rounds like the .38-40 and 44-40... They all kill deer well with good shot placement, as does the .223, .270 Win, .308 or whatever.1 point

Shot last night. Third buck I had walk by in a 45 minute time span. He was the second biggest. The big boy lived to make it to Saturday. Good Luck and be safe this weekend.1 point

"Republicans had blocked the bill before the election, fearing that passage would boost the re-election prospects of the bill's Democratic sponsor, Montana Sen. Jon Tester." That kind of nonsense is one of the reasons this country is doomed. Its all about them (politicians and their careers) , never about whats best for the rest of us, and BOTH parties are just as guilty as the other.1 point

That's spot on...I killed my heaviest buck (175 dressed) chasing a doe the day before Thanksgiving. It was on state land, but in an area that gets little pressure, because you have to walk several miles to get there. It about killed me dragging the big SOB out. I predict that MANY bucks will stop chasing permanantly Saturday...hehehe...1 point

Deer are not exactly color blind, they just see colors differently than we do. They see yellows and reds as greys, but they do see the blues pretty well. It all has to do with the cones and rods in their eyes, and the way to figure out what set of cones and rods in the eye picks up what colors is a scientific process thats been proven by studying the cones and rods in people that are color blind to certain colors. BTW, not all people are color blind the same, its usually different levels and can happen with different colors. They also did not consciously breed out different colors of deer, thats not how evolution works. The deer that could camouflage themselves best lived longer and bred more often, and as a result, their genes became more prevalent.1 point

Couldn't be more wrong the ballistic coefficient is as high in a 243 95 gr Nosler as it is for a 30-06 150 gr Nosler. You can check it out yourself. Listen you can shoot what you want, the facts and the venison speak for themselves. I've dressed too many deer to count shot by 243 in the vitals. The lungs turn into soup. As far as kids shooting it due to recoil,.... I'm 43, 6' tall and way 200 pounds. I'm hardly recoil shy..... I have everything from 300 Wby Mag to 22/250 in my safe. The fact is, I'd take a 243 to the deer woods as fast as I'd take a 30-06.1 point

actually the smart thing to do is call the police and have them arrested for trespassing. You use an analogy of you being shot at several times. I find that a bit well never mind, but in the original post I did not see anything about the trespassers firing at the land owners. An entirely different situation. But you can bet if I was shot at, I sure as hell would return fire, and it would not be over anyone's head. Self defense. Condoning or in the east justifying such behavior and saying they were stupid for admitting to it, really is quite unsettling.1 point

I would recommend a cardboard box stuffed with old clothes/rags, a 12 or 14 inch box will easily stop an arrow going 300fps. I would also go 20/30/40. With my setup, the 10 and 20 are super close while there is an inconsistent drop between 30 and 40. After 40 all the pins are equally spaced out to 70 yards.1 point

Unless a hunter messed up the spot, these statements tell you a ton of info. The question is, what are you doing about it? It's like being given an open book test and getting a 50 on it. Sheesh...the answer is right there. They are not scraping and signposting as much right now because bucks are focused more on receptive does. The first time I see a primary scrape leafed over, it tells me where to go immediately. Find the does, and find funnels between bedding areas, and then find the thick stuff. One of those three options will pan out for you. Just don't give up, thinking the rut is over...cause it's not. The back side of breeding is the best time imo to take the top end bucks. Mature bucks are more willing to take risks at the end of the rut for the late estrous does. And, that time is nearing over the next week to 10 days.1 point

Did you consider that maybe that's where he was shooting the squirrel because that was the particular squirrel that was raiding his bird feeder, or making a nest in his attic? All year I wake up, slide the .22 out the bathroom window and ding the dang Starlings that are trying to get in my bluebird and Marten houses. Then later, after I get dressed, I go out hunting.1 point

I would think before you purchase property you walk it. If the buyer wanted them down before closing then I'm sure he could have worked something out with he origonal owner and the person who built them. I'm sure something could have been worked out if addressed from the start1 point

Just got back from camp! It was a great weekend. Had my brother, friend Craig and his son Zach at the camp. Saturday was great. Zach was down in the "bear den" stand, I was at a food plot stand and Jeff was hunting a cut corn field. We all did all day sits. Zach saw 6 bucks and 9 doe. Two shooters where in the bunch the real wide 10 point and the tall 8. These two came into him as close as 20 yards but no shot. The only buck chasing the does was the tall 8 pt and a small 6 pt. The wide 10 was not interested. I saw a small buck following a doe by my stand. I get a text from Jeff that he just missed the deer I shot three weeks ago, the broken 8pt. He said the deer was fine. 5 minutes later he texted that he shot a big 8 pt. I meet him at his stand at 9. We find hair and no blood. He said the shot was foward in the chest neck area. He swears the arrow was sticking out of the deer as it ran. We found hair in another spot 20 yards from impact still no blood. 4 guys looked over the whole area for a 10 hours between yesterday and today. Nothing found except an 8pt shed. The shot is on video and I will post it at a later date. It looks like the arrow hits the deer where he said, it's a bit tough to tell. I get back in my stand and have a deer come out late in the afternoon. He presents a clear 32 yard shot so I take it. The deer turns as I release and the arrow goes into the deer high in the back and take out an artery. He crashes 25 yards away, a done deal. not a big deer but my 5 year jinx is over. We go out Sunday morning and Zach shoots a nice 6pt. The deer quarters away from him and his shot is far back but drives up through liver. We track the deer for 75 yards. I jump the deer and he has a real hard time getting up and actually falls down twice. He moves off into thicker cover and we back out. We let the deer go for about 2 hrs. We resume the tracking and have decent blood and then it stops. we start doing circles and spend the next hour just looking for the deer itself. BTW te deer did cross onto my neighbors property. We have a rule to call each other and thats what I did. He got back to me and said it was fine and good luck. I was about 50 yards from Zach and started to smell a buck. There were lots of scrapes in the area but this was pretty strong. I headed into the wind and came upon a brushy area that was perfect bedding spot. Right in the middle was Zach's buck dead. He was so excited. The kid learned a lot from the tracking and the arrow placement on the deer. Here is a kid I mentored 3 years ago putting all he has learned into practice. His first buck will be mounted and he wants it to stay at the cabin for a while. A great weekend, doing laundry right got to be ready to leave in 4 days!!! Can't wait.1 point

11/7 am 27 Cold with a heavy frost. Hit the ladder stand out behind the house for 2 hours. Very quiet all morning until 8:15 when I ahd a nice one come in. We now have meat!! Story below. This may be one of the bucks that I am the proudest of taking. Sometimes it is just a lucky day or something but I feel I really earned this buck. It has been my worst bow season ever for deer sightings. I have been on stand during legal hours a total of 80 hours this season with 8 deer sightings. 1 deer for 10 hours is a very bad ratio I am usually 3 times that average. That being said I have been a bit discouraged with the activity. But I have been dragging my butt out every possible day. I think Zemmer18 from this site said once it is my persistence that pays off in the end. This week has been really cold and the sightings have picked up slightly. I actually passed a little 3 point at 30 yards yesterday, about the fourth passed 1.5 year old this season. It was very tempting considering I really do hunt for the meat. My family loves it and the freezer is scary low! I have been optimistic that the bucks had to start moving sooner or later. So on to the hunt. This morning was a frosty 27 degrees with a heavy frost covering the ground. I headed into my ladder stand behind the house and was set up by 6 am. It was very quiet all morning and I had not heard or seen anything. At 8:15 am I catch movement out front and see a deer crossing from my right to left about 80 yards out. Seeing that it is a nice buck but not working towards me I grab the doe can and give a couple calls. He stops but not really interested continues but does turn a little left. He cuts enough to get at 40 yards broadside which is my max range. He is at a small opening and I draw back and kind of bent over to line up with the hole and just tell myself this is not a good shot and let off. He then turns right and is headed out directly away from me. I grab the grunt tube and give it a couple blows and nothing, crap! Now what? He is at 70 yards…80 yards and going. I give a snort wheeze call with my mouth and he stops on a dime. I do it again and he spins 180 and back at me. He angles a little left and goes right through a lane but he is quartering to me. Then he turns and comes straight at me and now stops facing me at 12 yards. He turns a bit each way and actually gets broadside and looks away. Yea I start to draw and he snaps his head right back around! Oh cruds I am now pulled back like 3 inches and stuck. I start shaking, the bow starts shaking, my eyes are popping outa my head. I am thinking this is it he is going to bust me and be gone. After what seems like forever he turns away and I can let down, no way I could pull it then. He turns and starts walking away quartering away perfectly. I pull back and put the pin on the spot, double check pin so we do not repeat the miss I had two weeks ago!, and let it fly hitting perfect half way back. The arrow stopped on the far shoulder. He takes off and circles up and I see him go nose diving then summersault crash. He went about 70 yards. The whole deal took like 8 minutes and was extremely intense. I had to sit down until the shakes went away!! Got him dragged out and cleaned up he hit the scales at 160 pounds dressed. He will make some nice meals. He is a 9 point but I think most of the 9th point broke off when he flipped.1 point

The only public land I know of that is in 3M is Stewart State Forest which is overly crowded and a war zone during the first few days of gun season. Not 100% positive but looking at the WMU map, West Point looks like it falls under 3P.1 point

Shot this buck at 7:45 this morning and recovered him at 11. Poor shot and jumped him a few times. I didn't want to back out because of the heat. Taken out of Letchworth and is my biggest to date! Extremely proud of this big old seven point.1 point

just me but I would think being there raking leaves and mowing would cause as much havoc as walking in. I sometimes think that we have become way too technical and try to out think even ourselves when it comes to this stuff. Pick a stand go there and hope for the best.1 point

Picture. His attention was turned towards another deer...thought it was a doe. Turned out that one was my #1 target...I about cried. Was a solid 160 class typical frame. This guy had nothing on him rack wise but dwarfed him body wise. 209 lbs. guts in. Biggest neck I have seen outside of the rut time (late October early Nov).1 point
