So my mom turns 88 today and my soon to be 90 year old dad (both in great health and have wits about them) got up at o'dark thirty to go get breakfast for her. Then he preceded to go to the store and gather things to load a surprise picnic basket with. Cake included. They drove to Niagara on the lake for a birthday picnic. They just called, they were releasing helium birthday balloons over the lake. Rain held off for them. Just had to share as I'm blessed to still have them around.

I know lots of things. LOL

Had this last week. Wild turkey( the monarch bird I've been hunting for years) rubbed with Bearman dry rub, was marinated in oj and Italian dressing then wrapped in bacon over pecan chips on the smoker. Nice Belgian beer to go with it

The farmer is starting me out with one permit . If all goes well , I will get more . From the sheet I saw , he probably has at least 15 shooters . Just trying to help the farming community . I drove out to the properties a while ago to see what they look like . Pretty muddy and you have to walk quite a ways to get back to any tree line and far enough away from any dwellings at one spot . Can't park or drive in the fields where I 1st looked . At another spot , I drove about 50 yards off the road into an opening in a bean field and saw a doe approximately 120 yards out feeding . She glanced up at me took about 10 steps in my direction and went back to feeding . So , that area looks promising .

I shoot a one pin slider now with my new bow. set and zeroed at the bottom point at 25 yards. puts me in the heart from 0 to 30. anything beyond that gives me the time to range and adjust or I don't shoot. Best move I have made. The known yardage at the bottom setting is important so you can make that slide if you have to without looking.

I just can't see cultivating a piece of land, planting seed and letting it grow, and pouring a bag of store bought factory made feed stuff, as the same thing. Food plots have to grow (and maybe they won't) and can only be placed in certain spots. Farmers fields and food plots will sustain wildlife before, during and after deer season. Store bought feed and attractants are meant to attract deer to one small spot, while the hunter is there and it can be placed anywhere. It can't be put out in the middle of a block of tall pines where there is no sunlight & poor soil. If no deer come into it a "hunter" can move to a swampy area and pour some feed out there. No hits? move to some deep hardwoods and pour some out there. Guy who hunt plots and fields can't bring them to different locations. I get the "they both attract deer" thing but no way are they the same IMHO.

Borngeechee, I think you need to specify whether it's rifle hunting or bow hunting because that'll make a difference.

I prefer a Treestand while bow hunting to give me more visibility and hope that any of my scent would dissipate by the time it gets to ground level . I think a stand helps for close up hunting . When gun hunting , I prefer a blind to be out of the cold wind , rain and snow .

I used to do just that , now I let my son push - err I mean walk and stalk ! And yes you do see more deer that way IMO !

I know this isn't a choice but I prefer to walk and stalk and sit in various places for a short time. cover more ground and I think I tend to see more deer that way

This isn't about ethics, its about a farmers ability to make money to pay his taxes, buy pesticides, buy herbicides, pay the fuel bill and put clothes on his kids. If you want to ensure this new relationship with the farmer remains healthy, you will need to produce. When damage permits are issued, its because there is a pest problem - the pest being the deer.

What's to know . There is a sheet that must be signed by the Agent and the Permittee . It explains what has to be done and what is legal . If the rules / regulations are not followed with all conditions it could result denial of future permits and may be considered violations of State and local laws . Your little remark about blasting them at night with a light pretty much set me off . Even though permit holders are allowed to take the deer 1/2 hour before sunrise and up to 10 pm , I don't hunt in the dark .

It's kind of freaky how this Four Season guy flips out over nothing these days. It looks like he is on a campaign to alienate as many people here as he possibly can. Just take a look at this reply and see if there is any way that it makes any kind of sense other than the fact that he is simply losing it .... lol.

a lot of times they don't want hunters out during regular hours because the deer problem exists on working farms, which means workers out in the fields and customers at farm stands and out at the "pick your own " farms during daylight hours........the farmers aren't usually too concerned with offering a quality hunting experience and if you don't do it someone else will...I've been on a few and the landowners wanted nothing to do with guys who didn't produce, they were asked not to come back.

The last I knew, Charlie has 3 different presentations that he performs. It depends what the sponsor paid for. One presentation is about QDM, one is Whitetails through the seasons, the other one is his personal testimony. The first time I saw Charlie I saw the first two. The second time, just the QDMA, the third time I saw the first and third topics. No one is going to tell you to run out and join a church. Charlie will just explain how his faith has affected him in his life.

Not my thing, but honestly who cares. People who bait are missing out on the total experience, not us.. I would still take my odds ,with years of "real"experience, over theirs any day. At least with an older buck or doe. Not so sure about a 1 1/2 year old or younger though.

2014 Hit List

Wow. I have been a customer of Cableas for over 20 years and have had their credit card for about 12 years or so. I haven't received one thing in the mail about this store opening, no flyer or any discount postcard of any kind. I have purchased thousands of dollars in merchandise over the years. I thought the store opened later this week. I have only been to the Hartford store so I can't compare their other stores. Honestly, I wish Cabelas had stayed out of New York. Now we have to pay more tax $ on things we enjoy doing!!!!

Hhhmmm....... I'm going to be a zebra...so that's pretty accurate they are related to donkeys and I own the fact that I can sometimes be a Jackass...lol...but being a woman...I'll go into the next life never having to worry my "coat" is the same as any other zebras out there...

mechanicals have come a long way. the new rages look even better. I would hate to lose a trophy buck because of a broadhead issue, but I'll say that i've never stuck a deer with a rage that got away. There is no replacement for a poor shot, but i've had a handful that weren't perfect and they all died. If you're really worried go for fixed, you can't go wrong.

Can't say I've ever pulled an over nighter in the ADK's, but I have spent a good amount of time in the dark in unfarmiliar territory. This may sound like a trivial suggestion, but I've found those inexpensive reflective tree tacks to be very valuable around my campsites especially if you'll be exiting the immediate sight for any reason.(bathroom breaks, firewood collection, water runs.., etc) Chances are you wont be carrying your GPS when nature calls in the middle of the night, and all the flashlight power in the world wont help you find your way back to camp if you accidently get turned around in a thicket. Mark a few trees during daylight that fan out from your camp leading to these locations and you just might save yourself the frustration of sleeping in the fetal position while everything in the forest tries to suck the blood out of ya until the sun comes up!
