  1. Hi Wooly, here is my winning painting of Ruddy Ducks: Larger copy here. The competition is very tough and the other artists that enter this are truly exceptional. It's hard to believe I won! This will be the 2015-2016 stamp. There may be a "home town" event next year after the stamps are issued, in which case I'd be happy to sign them if anyone is into that sort of thing. It is an immense honor!

  6. I have eaten enough tags to realize that I sure don't want to let too many go by in bow season. When gun season rolls around, I become a lot more picky. Those of us that hunt heavily used state land without the benefits of agriculture in the area do understand how rare some of these opportunities can be. We understand that opportunities in such areas are not to be squandered ....lol.

  10. My son shot this bear last week. I got to watch the whole thing from my tree stand. While he was on the ground 20 feet away. I was very proud. He is only 15 years old and this was his first big game kill. He took the time to wait to make sure it was alone and then the bear winded him and bolted. He hit the bear with the first shot while it was on a full run. He is going to be a great hunter.

  16. Not to get technical here, but you CAN use lead split shots in NY. It is illegal to SELL but not use. Absolutely no law on the books that says you can't use it.

  20. When I was in HS I threw a perfect spiral with a Nerf football into one of those. Found out white faced hornets can fly faster than I could run . And that after diving into neighbors pool that they'd wait for me to pop back up. Hey, I never claimed I was bright

  24. So I had to go do more work yesterday. Moved 2 stands that needed it, and checked the straps on all of the gun stands. We checked the plots, and they have been hitting the brassicas hard already. We discovered the Ground Hog Radishes are already 8 to 10 inches long, and the deer are yanking them and eating them. Turnips are developing nicely too. At this point we just have to place our Posted signs at the roads, and everything is done. Time to start getting my gear ready for my first bow hunt!

  25. Ill be dropping the first mature buck or good size doe that comes my way. After that, the pressure is off, and if its a doe I take first, then Ill be horn hunting until gun season, or when I hunt the one farm with the DMAPs.

  29. My ballot choices are simple: Did you vote for the Safe Act? If yes, where is the spot I have to fill in for your opponent. Did you NOT vote for the safe act? If you didn't, you've got my vote. It is just that simple. If you voted for it, my vote is my expression of punishment for trampling on the second Amendment. Nothing else matters this year. http://huntingny.com/forums/topic/17272-lest-we-forget/page-1

  30. Dom, You need to have a garden to provide the veggies to go along with your fish and game to lower your grocery bill more. You can even grow melons in NY ( I grow mine on black plastic mulch):

  31. Trump is right about their water being flammable. Methane gas has been in those water supplies for decades. The wells tested and showing an issue after fracking began, were never tested prior to fracking. So it cannot be said there is a cause and effect relationship. If it were true, there wouldn't be any fracking going on anywhere. It's an unfounded accusation by people opposed to the energy source, just as they are opposed to the Keystone pipeline.

  34. I sit all day everyday... I don't get bored, don't sleep a wink and don't fade out. I wait all year for the season and I hit the ground running. Oh and the wife yells at me cause I drink 2 5 hour energy drinks every sit.... :/ This year I may not sit all day everyday since it's my first year up here. I'll put in some time and see how the movement is accordingly. Always saw many deer in the afternoon early season on LI.

  37. I'll bet they probably said that the law specifies the illegality of using baiting products, not buying, selling or possessing them. That's my guess. I would really like to see exactly how they did reply. I hope you come across that e-mail.

  43. I went to see my doctor yesterday to go over results of my C.T. Scan of my lungs that I had this past Monday, and it was great news. The scan showed no return of cancer, and I won't have to have another scan for 12 months instead of every 6 that I have been going to. It has been 24 months since my lung cancer diagnosis, and 20 months since chemo and surgery to remove my lung...and I am cancer free.. I wake up everyday and try to be positive, and the doctors news this week makes me very positive...can't wait till Oct 1 opener!!

  44. Above what others have said. The first legal, safe and ethical shot you have on a deer within you confident range, take it. Don't worry about size and age and all the others hot button topics. Enjoy it and don't stress about it. Find a companion, or better yet a few, to enjoy it with. For me the best part of the season if doing it with family and friends.

  47. So one of the best things that can make a season great is to be part of someones first deer...Our great friend Josh decided a couple years ago he would hunt with us and came out a couple times with his old 30/30, over the next summer he decided he wanted to get into bowhunting, so he set up an old bow and he needed a special sight because he cannot see well out of his right eye, he has a sight where he shoots right handed with his left eye...practiced up and hunted a few times last year with us...this past summer he wanted to get more serious, he joined our club, he bought a four wheeler and got a couple treestands...he has been hunting with us every weekend. He has passed on a few deer already because he didn't want to shoot a fawn or he didn't want to take a bad shot...this morning he had three bucks come through, and he took the first deer of his life...and it was with his bow...nice six point with a perfect lung shot...the deer went about 60 yards and died right on the four wheeler trail...regardless of how the rest of the season goes, being part of someones first deer has already made it great! I also think the seed has now been planted with his little son Tanner, he was proud of his Dad!
