  3. Deer were out pretty early feeding. Some turkeys decided they wanted a birds eye view of me before they take their bath. Thunder shower during the turkey pics.

  4. I got a call this morning from a friend in Pendleton who informed me that a flock of 80-100 honkers was set up in his rye field. Thats the good news, the bad news is I have obligations morning and evening until Wednesday evening, bummer. I grabbed a Migratory Bird stamp at the PO this afternoon, now I need a HIP number. Cigars are in the truck.............. Hopefully they are still in the area and nobody else gets into them by the time I get there but doubtful. I'll dig out the full body dekes from the loft, dust off the goose call, hunt down some triple B's from the cabinet and grab the SBE. Wait till the dog gets wind of this caper.

  5. My only pair of camo cover alls are ripped from the crotch to the knees. They still smell like last years deer, so I'll try to squeak another season out of them. I haven't made much of a fashion statement in the woods in a long time, lol

  8. my resident bucks are still in summer patterns, i usually get bucks end of september that are being dispursed by older/or more agressive resident bucks,or yearlings kicked out by mom . I have seen a lot more buck after really knocking doe numbers down and am as close to a 2or 3 to one ratio now.. to maintain that ratio i take 10 doe(not anterless but doe) a year. i think greater competition for a doe causes bucks to really move while searching.

  9. I believe the licenses are all the same. He'll have to follow the rules that are in place for ages 16+ as to taking of game. Once he turns 16 his "youth" privilege's end. I could be wrong. lol For instance he can hunt the youth deer season still and can take any deer. Once he turns 16, if you hunt in an area with AR he has to follow that same AR rule.

  11. I think hunter tactics play a larger role in this than most people think. Sure ranges come into play, but most people outhunt themselves. They take themselves out of the game early or make silly mistakes (learning opportunities nevertheless). These are also the same people that think the rut is the only time to kill a mature buck or any buck for that matter. Bucks don't simply materialize out of thin air. They have to exist somewhere. Why more hunters don't think about it that way is mindboggling.

  12. People worry about too much silly stuff. I am in public from time to time with camo jeans...nearly all of it is hunting related...running to the hardware store to pick up ratchet straps, or similar. I'm not wearing camo because it's camo, my prep jeans are just camo because they were $5 at Walmart and durable as all get out. People tell themselves stories too easily. The jamoke wearing the camo shirt or hat may be a stone cold killer and you might learn a thing or two. Or, he could very well be a wannabe hunter who has all the gear but hasn't hunted in ages or not at all. Then again, life's too short.

  13. Well they taste a little different, you'll have to sample a few piles to find out. The does are a sweeter and the buck's droppings are bitter/sour. Let us know what you find.

  14. The only time I remember going out in public in camo was when I showed up at the YMCA pool in my camoflage speedo.. Some kid told me that my wetsuit was wrinkled. I told him that I wasn't wearing a wetsuit...

  20. I get mine home as fast as possible, hang it up, skin it right away and then quarter it up and take it to the fridge. 2 back straps, 2 hind and front quarters I remove all the shelves from the fridge and put all the meat in there to cool. Works like a charm if you can do it.

  26. ...ditches or creeks behind your stand work well to help you drop down out of view. down sloping ravines and ridges behind the stand work even better for a couple reasons; minimal deer movement happens behind you and in the calmer evening the thermals will pull your scent down over the back side away from the deer/plot.

  27. I am an old Goat that has taken my share of Deer over the years and this thread got me to thinking of my past experiences with a wide variety of firearms. I am a big believer in shooting proficiency, practicing with your guns getting to the point of being able to hit the spot you are aiming at consistently. The heart lung shot is the one I prefer because it is a large area that is the easiest to hit and certain death will occur if a hunter does his part putting bullet through there. If I am presented with that shot and am using a firearm that I am proficient and confident in I will use any caliber with good ammunition as long as it is legal and within reasonable range. As for the the calibers I have used these are the ones I can remember. 222 Rem, 220 Swift, 243 Win, 280 Rem, 338 Win, 357 mag & 44 mag both out of handguns, 44 mag bullets fired from a muzzleloader, 45/70, 20 ga foster slugs, 12 ga foster slugs. Distances varied but the majority were taken within 100 yds with a few longer shots out to maybe 250 yds. Most of those Deer fell where they stood, the rest ran a short distance of up to maybe 50 yds and keeled over. The only two that went far was one Doe hit through the heart with a 44 mag bullet shot from a muzzleloader sprinted a little over 100 yds and ran smack into a page wire fence where she was stopped. Believe it or not a small Buck shot behind the front shoulder at a range of 35 yds with a 350 grain hollow point from a 45/70 went the farthest. There was a good blood trail so me and my hunting buddy had no problem following. We found him piled up almost 200 yds from where he was shot. Upon field dressing it was shown that the bullet had caused tremendous damage, how that Deer went that far I can not explain but it was certainly amazing. I had one instance where I lost a Deer, I jumped a Buck out from under a scrub apple tree in a fairly open field and cut loose with a 12 ga shotgun with slugs. I was pretty sure I hit him good, I found blood and looked and scoured that area for hours but I never did find him.The reality for me was that I more than likely did not hit him as well as I thought and shooting at a sprinting Deer is probably not a good idea. As for the original poster's question about using a 243 Win, in the right hands I think it is a great Deer caliber. Take it for what it is worth. Al

  29. no the youth licence is based on age when bought when licence year starts(oct 1), good for entire year, he lucked out his b day is later than oct 1in that he saved a few bucks is all. use to really hurt when applying for doe tags (oct 1 deadline) but lowering of hunting age helped that.. i couldnt get/apply for doe tag till i was 17 as my birthday falls in early nov as well.

  30. I have a drop away rest but my vanes have to be set a certain way to get clear from the riser (rest set close for tuning reasons). I fletch my own arrows and now do all my bow work myself too. The only reputable shop around is 40 minutes away and the guys are never there when I need them. Very satisfying to do the stuff yourself.

  35. Back in '87 a bunch of guys and myself packed in on horseback about two miles IIRC. We even had a couple horses drag wagons loaded with all the comforts of home. Wall tents, cook stoves, food and booze. 7 guys for 7 days and we NEVER saw a deer! (thats 49 days of hunting and seeing zip) I saw a bear but couldn't get a crack and another guy saw a coyote. That was it..................... Did I mention we had a blast? Oh yea, I just remembered.........on the way out one of the horses got spooked while tied to a road gate. The thing ripped a huge gash into its breast that took 75-100 stitches to close at a nearby vet. That sucked...

  36. I have hunted there every year for a while now. As some have said, the deer are hard to find! I have trail cam videos of some really nice bucks from the MRP, including this year. I also have video of many does, fawns, and yearling bucks. So... I don't think there are as few deer as some people think, but they certainly take work to find. There are pockets of substantial deer sign here and there, you just have to cover enough ground to find it. The terrain can be pretty rough and the woods extremely thick in places. My favorite part of hunting there- I have actually seen more Moose than deer! - Kevin

  43. Thats one of the issues hunting field edges. Once in a while you can get into a setup where you can access and exit safely. Otherwise, the coyote yip, getting a partner to drive up, and taking your chance is all you can do. Getting away from field edges is a better way to hunt for thr most part. Take your shot at a field edge set once in a while but dont hunt right over the food source daily and expect them not to know about it.

  44. Go get your camera Red. Just apologize to the nice ranger, and tell him you must have forgot to tag your cam when your cat jumped out of the truck and took off into the park. Make sure you leave a picture of "Felix" and your contact info with him in case someone finds him,lol

  46. If you're confident that you can hit and kill with it, whatever you're carrying is the best caliber ever made. I've lobbed a few 44-40 rounds over the years myself, Pygmy. Nice to hear somebody mention that deer were actually taken on a pretty regular basis before the word 'magnum' was even coined.

  47. I've had the UA Ayton hoodie jacket for about 5-6 years. Great jacket for bow hunting, until the snow falls, wind is whipping and temps get into 20s. At least for me, by then my bow is in storage. No complaints other than $$. FYI - Like most UA clothing, sizing tends to be on the snug-fit side. I typically wear a LT jacket, but usually have to opt for the XL. In late bow season with layered clothing underneath, it gets to be a snug-fit. So I'm suggesting not to buy w/o trying one on for sizing purposes. Not made or advertised as scent-free outerwear, but if you do your due dilligence with washing & storage - it is fine! Would I recommend it, sure. But..lots of other great camo clothing at budget prices available.
