We were in Fla. At a lighthouse a worker hears me talking guns with my brother in law, we start talking deer hunting. He says he goes back home to Wisconsin to hunt, the deer are small in Fla. A woman is listening and comes over and says, " I wish someone would come to my farm and kill them I got to many ". Oh I ask," where is your farm"? Illinois she says !! Everyone sign it even if the current Albany won't change it, they will get the message. Important to keep this up sign and support any Pro gun bill you see. I don't know if all here know the NYS police will be doing AMMO BACK GROUND CHECKS soon, as per SAFE ACT. So if you were thinking it don't effect you it will. http://www.nysenate.gov/webform/standing-our-second-amendment-rights2 points

Well, I messed up. I pulled two cards today that had been producing a ton of pics. When I got home I found my #1 camera had zip on it. That's very odd?? Not sure what happened with that............ #2 camera had some doe, fox and one awesome 8"+ bearded hen! I was pretty excited about the hen video until I deleted the entire card. DRAT! I was watching the news at the time and not paying close attention. Close your eyes-envision 20 seconds of high quality video of a beautiful, sexy bearded hen strolling by the camera, then hesitating for a split second. That's all we got folks. Sorry........................................2 points

Made offer last year, but no takers. It doesn't get used any longer since I have more toys. I have an older CVA Wolf that I no longer use. It's not the prettiest thing in the world since it's had a fair amount of days in the field, but it'll still shoot and good starter mz. Can include a scope. Would like to be in the Rochester area so I can meet w/Parent etc.1 point

Okay lets do this logically... Show me any proven evidence that coyotes have caused any real damage to the deer herd across NY.. or even better, irreparable damage... and remember, coyotes have been in NY for 70-80 years, maybe longer, no one really knows for sure... so this shouldn't be too hard. I'll save you a lot of time here if you like by letting you know you won't find any... because none exists... the hatred of the coyote in NY comes as a result of a myth perpetuated by bad hunters that have trouble seeing and killing deer... somehow lots of good hunters started buying into the myth.. and it's snowballed into the big fairy tale folk lore that we know now. Any animal that has been part of the ecosystem for nearly a century is a cog in the machine and an important part of the balance of nature.1 point

This is but another example of EPA and other government agencies working with activist environmental groups to sue and settle on claims that afford leverage to enact new regulations which they lack statutory authority to otherwise accomplish. “Sue and settle “ practices, sometimes referred to as “friendly lawsuits”, are cozy deals through which far-left radical environmental groups file lawsuits against federal agencies wherein court-ordered “consent decrees” are issued based upon a prearranged settlement agreement they collaboratively craft together in advance behind closed doors. Then, rather than allowing the entire process to play out, the agency being sued settles the lawsuit by agreeing to move forward with the requested action both they and the litigants want.1 point

It's pretty hard to pick a side on this debate. There are pro and con arguments on both sides. Understanding that coyotes have not always been involved in deer population control in NYS, I am convinced that they could be eradicated, and life in the woods would continue to do just fine as it did not that many years ago. There is no doubt in my mind that hunters do the job just fine. On the other hand, I do view coyotes as a resource. Trappers find coyotes as supplemental income that joins all the other species that provide them with cash. Yes in spite of fluctuating fur prices they do serve as yet another resource from the trapline. They also serve a recreational resource for sport hunting. They are something to hunt that was not available years ago. I have no problem with that. Also, I am a bit cautious about spreading the notion that deer populations can be controlled by introducing predatory critters. Understanding how many people put up with hunting as being justified as a necessary endeavor of population control, it occurs to me that loud emphasis on the effects of coyotes on deer populations could encourage thoughts of the introduction of some rather nasty critters that I personally would not want to have to contend with. And then there is a rather self-serving notion that I champion that hunting is the only effective method of deer population control, and is the one irreplaceable method of deer population control. I'm not enthused about the general population starting to believe that there may be other avenues of deer control. Looking at all this coyote stuff, I can see elements of truth in both sides of the discussion. I think the coyote has a place in our environment, and being at the top of their food chain, I do believe that like any other species, some form of human intervention is necessary. Not to the point of eradication, but simply to the point of providing some sort of balance. I still want to have this species available to hunt. Trappers want this species to trap. I think they are a resource to be managed, and not a species subjected to eradication or total protection. I do think that like foxes, and bobcats, etc., the coyote is a species that does not benefit by being romanticized, given some undeserved high status or viewed as some mystical animal and protected beyond reasonableness, nor do I believe that they should be demonized beyond reality and removed from the landscape. Both positions are outside of reality and necessity. There is middle ground that we have discovered for other species. That's where our thinking should lie.1 point

I had a few opportunities but the one shot I did take was not recovered. Funny I did not get anything because I was also on a deer management program in July-Sept. But I have to admit I had fun and enjoyed the hunts. Next year I plan on hunting some areas with higher population to keep my enthusiasm up.1 point

Owls, fox, hawks, skunks, coon, 'possums..all have an impact. Why are the owl and hawk proteccted when they do a number on small game? Would you be all far a season on them? Why is there a season on a crow? I believe the deer season is too long. Many of the farmers and golf courses wish deer were gone. Would I support shooting them all year? These people do have a legit complaint. Would I support it? I should, because less to get in the way. However I would not because IMO. it is just not ethical. Same belief as the coyote.1 point

I'm guessing we'd lose a lot of whitetail and small game habitats to over browsing, thus eventually losing our "preferred species" for an extended period of time until the environment could replenish itself. Many place around my area are already seeing this to some extent. Enter the coyote as natures natural form of balance to the equation and we can carry on with little to no concern outside of our part as hunters. Subtract the coyote from the equation and you'll end up facing overpopulation of herbivores that annihilate the landscape before moving on to greener pastures leaving a wasteland in their wake. Over populate with coyotes and the vegetation has a chance to restore itself to a level that supports food and cover once again to all the critters higher on our preferred list. As hunters, we always think we can manage the wildlife to custom fit all our needs the best, in a way that we benefit from it most through increased harvests, bigger antlers, protection of age specific whitetails...blah, blah, blah... Apparently we aren't as good at that as we believe or deer hunters have an irreversible case of tunnel vision Must be since our brains are so much more advanced than some wild k-9's, we start to let our own greed and selfishness get in the way before fully understanding what is taking place, unlike some savage dog running on primal instinct that's been working for them since the beginning of their existence. No deer hunter likes increased competition with another predator is what it all boils down to.1 point

Some people in other states, that are pretty free with their firearms laws, do not have many place where their citizens can shoot them. Upstate NY has lots of places to shoot but the laws are horrible. That's why we will still see people from other states wanting to shoot their rifles in NY state. I have no problem with police being able to own semi auto black guns and taking them home, as long as they have a big problem with me not being able to do the same.1 point

Right...I am sure that coyotes have a place in the deer management equation... but no more than other predators impact overall wildlife numbers... they are a part of mother natures plan. To single them out over the greatest predator (man) as having the greatest impact on deer numbers wouldn't make a lot of sense. Sometimes hunters fail to give themselves enough credit for why deer management in NY can be a challenge.1 point

Well, I can't say that I have seen a lot of evidence that coyotes in our area are having any serious impact on deer populations. Of course what I know about that issue anywhere else is very little. My familiarity with how coyotes impact anyone else's area is absolutely non existent. However, I could buy into the "coyotes are ruining our herd" claims if they were ever accompanied my some kind of documentation (photos, etc.). I do think it is way too easy to blame coyotes for every instance of thinning deer density. I think it is important to be sure the right thing is being blamed for deer population changes. Coyotes do make for an easy guess, but unless those guesses are backed up with evidence, the real reasons for downward changes in local deer density may be going ignored.1 point

I agree and I have no problem with coyote hunting... in fact, it's fun.. and very necessary to keep populations at a manageable level. I think some hunters have different opinions of what those levels should be though. And... honestly, I don't really know what those levels should be either.. I just know that the whole "coyotes are decimating the deer herds" is nothing more than highly perpetuated myth and they pose no real threat to 99% of NY's deer herd.1 point

i'm really not trying to be a smart-alec. Its just that the NYSP are really pushing things a bit far by pre-empting the legislature and courts with their own wording and interpretations. The safe act did the following: Banned all magazines with >10 round capacity, including those previously grandfathered. Grandfathered in 10 rd mags that were possessed at the time the law took effect. Allowed for loading a max of 7 rds in a grandfathered 10 rd mag. Ten rounds can be loaded under specific circumstances (e.g. at a range) How that applies to items brought in from out of state, I don't know. How anyone can prove that a 10rd mag was/was not owned prior to 2013 I don't know. The Skretny decision ruled against the 7rd limit. My understanding is that NY falls under two different courts and due to that the Stretny decision only applies to part of the state. From a legal standpoint, the 7rd limit is still valid outside that jurisdiction. I think it technically still applies in the rest of the state, but most would agree that the Stretny decision makes it a non-issue. Then there's the overzealous cop/DA who could ruin your day. On top of this, Cuomo has supposedly said the NYSP would not enforce the 7rd rule.n (I haven't heard him say it myself). The LAW has not been amended by the legislature. although you could technically call the court ruling an amendment or sorts. What has been amended is the NYSP guide to enforcing this provision. I am not picking on jjb4900. What was posted is directly from the NYS website. I feel this distinction is very important. The NYSP do NOT have the authority to write or amend laws. Neither does the governor. Only the legislature can do that, and the the change must be signed into law by the governor. Barring that, a court ruling (such as Skretny) can alter the interpretation or application of the law - or even strike it down.. The NYSP has been making up their own BS on safe since day 1. They can interpret, stretch or add to the law all they want - it doesn't make it fact. Yes - in practice they can arrest you for anything they want. That doesn't make it legal, not does it mean it will hold up in court. Remember - the NYSP "guide" can change at any time. Cuomo wants to "crack down" or someone in Albany gets a cross hair up their backend and they could totally re-define what that guide says - without approval from the other branches of government. Just because some idiots in Albany decide "this is the law" doesn't make it the law. We need REAL reform (or repeal) of the safe act. The 7rd limit - along with plenty of other sections - need to go. Cuomo deciding to "not enforce" certain sections isn't good enough. All the "has been amended" hype is just to get people to shut up. "See - we fixed the law. Nothing to worry about!" It hasn't been fixed and we need to keep the pressure up. Answer to the original question - the limit is whatever they decide it to be. Either way, the empty 10rd mag should be fine under the law (with or without Skretny's ruling). To be extra sure, only load with 10 rds when at the range and you are 100% compliant with the text of the law. IANAL - this is NOT legal advice.1 point

10 rounders are fine you just can't load them all the way up with 10, if you plan to use that firearm to protect yourself or family with . That wouldn't be fair to the criminal on the other side of the door. You can only load 7 just like the criminal will. LOL!!! Cuomo ROCKS!!!1 point
