  2. The Appalachian Eagle Project in NYS started camera trapping as part of our Golden Eagle/Scavenger research the day after muzzleloader season ended - 12/23. Things were slow then suddenly one site in Delaware County had a burst of activity. These photos are mostly from Delaware. Some may be from Otsego. The bear could be a big problem as deer carcasses are scarce. Bear removing one of the two carcasses it took. Bear resting after clearing out our bait. 4. I just looked at some of my old reloading data, and found a couple of letters that I had kind of forgotten. One was a letter from Bob Hagel, typed ( with an old fashioned typewriter) on an NRA letterhead, answering some questions that I had posed about loading for the 7x 57. It is dated Feb. 4, 1981.. The other is a letter from Finn Aagaard, answering some questions that I had about loading the .338 Win mag. It is dated April 4, 1990. Both letters are personally signed by the above gentlemen. Not STAMPED, but signed in ink. I'm wondering if the current gun scribes still take the time to do such things..

  8. You have to remember that most of those landowners that border that property want it also. It may go for more than its worth or if you overbid the guy that wants it and then ask him for access to it? Better get the checkbook out. Then again you may get lucky and nobody wants or can afford the land at this time.

  11. Anybody ever watch any of those game warden shows that sometimes show up on The Animal planet channel? I watch them everytime I find them. Good shows! Anyway, I can recall at least two of those where the investigation was begun because of a post on internet forums or Facebook or some form of social media. These were guys who were bragging on the internet about hunting violations (even with pictures). They never said whether the fish and game department monitored the internet sites or whether a complaint was sent to them by somebody finding these confessions on the internet. But anyways, arrests resulted. The point being, that it probably is not a very smart thing to admit to any law-breaking, publicly, on the internet. I don't want to get involved with any sort of aiding and abetting activity (lol), but I will just say, "Don't be so damn stupid".

  12. Love pork roast in the crock pot with sour kraut . I put it in the crock pot with pepper and about half the kraut juice from one bag. let it go all day then the last 1-1/2 to 2 hrs, add the rest of the Kraut and juice. Serve it with a side of mashies with kraut over the top of them and a nice dark rye bread…..sometimes I cook it stove top in a big pot, if I plan on being home most of the day. DAMN… might have to make it tomorrow .

  13. One change yo the menu; Lipton Onion Soup Mix was put over top of the roast right out of the bag (dry) and it was perfection! Been quite a while since we've had a pork roast. For the past 5-6 years it's always been Wegman's pork tender loin in their Club Pack, the best value in meat section. We put the 'kraut (drained) in the pan first then put a a rack in to hold the meat up over the 'kraut. 2 hours at 350 for a 3lb boneless roast. Darn good!

  14. I was very surprised to read this post tonight, as a friend of mine who lives in Kentucky and I were discussing meeting in Ohio for the late muzzleloader season as well, but he can't get the time off from work. We were just talking about doing exactly what you are doing, and the same state forest. We did make a trip to Ohio two years ago, rented a cabin for five days and hunted the pre rut during archery season. Loved it for the most part, and can't believe I have yet to go back. I saw three bucks the first morning, and passed them all as I wasn't traveling to Ohio to shoot a 2 year old 9 point or the two smaller bucks that also came in bow range. Unfortunately I did not see another buck during the trip, but it was great to hunt a place where I knew there were really nice bucks around. Neither of us shot bucks, but both of us could have. If I remember correctly we both passed on does. We hunted Woodbury, which I believe is a bit north of where you are headed. Some of the bucks I saw in the back of pick up trucks while there were unbelievable. The guys in cabins around us that scored shot very nice bucks. Out of the five or so I saw killed, just one was under 120". I'd say one I saw was every bit of 170+. Some things I was a bit surprised by: 1. Woodbury was 90% briars and thorns, at least the areas we hunted. I had never seen anything like it. I had spent a good bit of time studying topos trying to find spots that most people might not hunt or might have to walk farther than they'd like. I then tried to find good funnels and pinch points using the satellite imagery. Didn't pan out well as I couldn't walk almost anywhere off the trails. It was insane. I have to assume that most of Ohio isn't like that, but a lot of Woodbury was. Next time I'm going to call the park and speak to a ranger if possible to ask about the terrain. Its worth your time to do so. 2. Most of the hunters I met used bait. I didn't, and really don't like the idea personally, but it is legal in Ohio. I have heard that some state land or parks in Ohio no longer allow baiting, but I have not idea how many do or don't. 3. The area of Ohio you are going to is incredibly hilly, I believe. Ups and downs, more so that flat. That was my experience as well, and it made predicting the winds tough, as currents where up and down all over. 4. If Zaleski is anything like Woodbury during the archery season I saw a ton of out of state trucks. There are many others who apparently think like you and I, or read the articles about how great the hunting is in Ohio. 5. When you find that perfect spot don't get too excited till you have been there in the dark. If you turn on the headlamp in the dark and the place lights up like a runway in different directions you will realize you the area might have already been hunted pretty hard. Guess you never know till you try, but a lot of the good trees I found had climber marks on them already. Hopefully that means that you have a good spot to hunt, and not that it means its been burned out. Won't matter for your first trip, but if you are scouting for the future just keep that in mind. If I were to go again there are some things I'd consider doing differently. The first time I had looked for places others might not want to go to, such as tougher terrain or longer walks. Many of the other guys I met focused on finding the edges of the park near private land. I privately thought this tactic was too obvious and too easy, and that everyone would be doing that. I didn't see a ton of deer trying to get back in as far as I could, but that could be simply due to the spots I chose to hang a stand. The other guys did much better using their plan. Might want to consider edges of the park. Hard to believe that everyone else isn't doing the same, but it worked for them for sure. Of course the upcoming rut might have aided their plans as the bucks were cruising. I also wouldn't be afraid to take a trail camera with me. While it is state land you can certainly get into some areas that might be worth putting a camera up to help you find the deer. Since my one and only tip to Ohio I have spoken to a few guys who hunt there yearly. They told me that the place I went (Woodbury) has been flooded by hunters over the past 10-15 years. They focus on the smaller parks to the south of Woodbury, and two of the guys mentioned Zaleski as a great place. That is why I was thinking of heading there next month. I was planning on using the trip to scout for next fall. If the weather changes and there I snow on the ground, I may end up going by myself anyway as the fresh snow would really help me prepare for a trip next fall. Your post here has got me thinking about it again, and that is not a good thing...going to have to come up with a good enough reason for my wife to approve... I wish you the best of luck, and I think you will have a great time. If you go I'd love to hear how it went and what you thought if you would not mind. Like you said I wouldn't ask for your hunting spots, just some ideas on the terrain, deer you saw, hunting pressure, etc. I'm 45 and not getting younger, I need to start taking these trips yearly before I get too old! Merry Christmas!

  16. Karl Gundel from Tivoli wrote to the NYOD knocking Bow Hunters as being selfish , blah , blah blah . He pretty much grouped all bow hunters as being selfish and wanting the woods to themselves . This guy stated that rifle , muzzleloader and cross-bow hunters need to form an alliance against bowhunters ! Nothing like wanting to divide the hunting community ! I hunt bow , gun and ML and take offense to this dip-wads letter !

  17. This is going to be a weird story that happened to me while hunting deer during the muzzle loading season in area 6G. Now the land I was hunting on was state land but at one time years ago the U.S. Navy was stationed there takeing up a very small area of the land. I have hunted this often and one thing that was weird was when you got back far in enough, compasses do not work. At the time this happened in my life, I was a very experience hunter who over the previous years had filled many deer tags. In the military I was a expert marksman but I cannot elaborate any further on that. Ok , i hunt with a 50 caliber Traditions muzzle loader. Before I go in the woods, I always test fire on 9" paper plates at the club range. To make sure the gun is right on target. I pre-weigh all my fast loaders. I usually carry at least 10 on me.The gun was shooting right where I wanted the sabot to hit on target. I cleaned the gun two days before the opening, went to the range and target test fired two sabots on paper. all good hits on paper. One I shot at 40yds. and the next 75yds. All was well. I am telling all this because whats going to happen after you guys read this story, some one will say, oh the gun sights were off ect.. On the opening morning, I parked my car and dressed for the occasion. Made sure I had all my gear and walked in a short distance from my parked car It was plenty daylight and the season was open.I took out one of my pre measured fast loads, checked it and then dumped in the powder. Following the powder, I started a 50cal. sabot bullet down the barrel.Rammed the round down the barrel with my ram rod.I absolutely made sure the sabot was fully seated. I have a mark on my ram rod to tell me the round is loaded fully down in the barrel. Set the gun on safety and loaded on a cap.. Ok, I walked in to where I saw a good place to sit on watch. My compass by then was not working. There was a dead fall that I was sitting on with my 1" thick hard foam seat under my butt. My view was good from where I was and of course there were tree,s here and there, some up right, some had fallen. I got very still and started my watch with my eyes scanning always looking for a deer comeing or as a hunter should o watch for deer. Now here it comes and this has always baffled me how this could happen.I looked good scanning the whole front of my watch. I looked to my left and turned my head front and you guessed it. There was a dam doe standing broadside to me straight out about 35 to 45 yds. from me. A perfect set up for a shot. I was really startled wondering where ta hell this deer came from. The doe was slowly eating grass with her head down with her side to me. Ok, I thought and very slowly raised my Muzzle loader.Got a perfect target line up on the does shoulder area. Took off the safety. Made a good aim and boom. The smoke came back towards me and I looked and the Doe was still standing, still eating. Absolutely no reaction to the shot. From what I could make of this was the deer never heard a thing ect..I slowly got a tree between me and the doe and went into a slow moveing reload. Ok I got reloaded, and by then the doe had grazed much closer to me Like 25 to 30 yds.. I slowly aimed at the does shoulder area useing the tree as a rest. Boommmn and the doe did a flip and fell down. All right I thought. I walked over to where the doe lay dead and checked my slug hit on the doe. I couldn,t believe it.The slug which should have hit the shoulder area instead went through the does neck just under the head. What in the hell is going on here I though. The very next morning I test target fired the gun at our club range and it was right on.To this day I look back on this as a very weird take on this doe. It was as if I was inside a time shift which where I saw the doe in each shot ,, her location to my eyes to shoot wasn,t perfectly showing me to where she was in front of me.There for both shots , 1 missed completely and the final hit was at least 4 feet away from where I aimed. The neck hit. Was the Navy doing some experiment tests in this area to cause this effect. ? Dam,I do not know what happened that day All I know is things were not right.

  18. Why would one not be willing to use a .223 for deer, but have no problem using an arrow. Now granted, the .223 would not be my first choice, but it is just as effective as any arrow for killing a deer... like an arrow, shot placement is the key... not a lot of room for error... but, we're talking about KILLING a deer here.. not splitting the atom.

  21. access is your real concern understandingly getting a easement from your surrounding land owners is a start but that can get sticky quick. you would no doubt need a attorney to write out the agreement, is there any a joining land owners willing to sell a easement or right away to the properties? I speak from experience people tend to change there mind quickly about letting others cross their property especially when hunting is involved!!

  26. To use your words....."I love you man!!!!!".... To have Hagel's data on my favorite 7x57 is great, I hope you can post it or pm me, I'd love to hear what he had to say. But to HAVE A LETTER PERSONALLY FROM FINN AAGAARD!!, that is so awsome I can't believe it, and he was a very humble man. I have all his books, some multiple copies, as well as Berit's remake of his Aagaard's Africa. You are a very blessed man. Keep them safe and read them often, they don't make humble, authoritative writers like them anymore.

  27. Yes the NYB bashing does make a good rallying cry for a few gun hunters who simply are envious of the fact that through effective organization and lobbying, the bowhunters today enjoy prime season times, durations, and bag limits. Yes, that is what it is all about. Just straight-up "envy". And now that bowhunters are beginning to enjoy success, all of their advances have brought some attention to themselves. And the envy grows until now you have open warfare from a handful of these guys who jealously look at what bowhunters have accomplished over the years. Yes, I have heard and read all the bitter comments about how the bowhunters are killing off all the good bucks before gun season even opens, and how the bowhunters are getting all the advantages of the rut, and all the other endless nonsense that really is just lashing out at all the benefits that bowhunters have worked long and hard to accomplish.

  36. Onion soup mix is great for a ton of dishes. We mix it in our ground beef dry and then make burgers that are delicious. Also put it in the meatloaf. Great stock for venison roast in the crock pot, or venison stew. I make pulled venison and cook the meat in the crock pot in the soup mix for flavor and then drain, and add BBQ sauce. Have also sprinkled it on pork chops as a rub and then grilled and topped with bbq sauce. The possibilities are endless.

  37. Maybe if there was actually a place for NYC folks to hunt dove, you might get more of a response. Most hunters that I know who reside in the city are already struggling to learn the ropes for species they can easily access within reasonable distances, such as deer and squirrel. 38. Go back and read all your posts, that's a pretty bold statement to say to someone you know nothing about. As stated before, to you and anyone else, please don't shoot smokeless out of any muzzloader that isn't intended for it. As for your other comment about taking your 54 against any inline, another very bold statement. My white will clover leaf anything that goes down the barrel. So if I use a 336 ignition in my thunderbolt is it a muzzloader??!! Also please call Jeff and tell him it's not a muzzloader, please let me know what he says. Sorry to the original post for getting off topic. Steve
