I don't understand all the fuss. Allowing the use of a crossbow during the archery season isn't a big deal. We've had it for years in Pa. I've experienced ZERO negative impact from guys using a crossbow during bow season. It's just another method for hunters to use. Me personally, if it were my home hunting State, I would ask that crossbow hunters be allowed to hunt the entire bow season anywhere in the State, not just a certain time frame or certain zone. I never understand why fellow hunters stand against those who prefer another method of hunting. In Pa over the years and to this day, I hear bickering between gun hunters and bow hunters. It's childish and ridiculous. Hunters as a whole should support increased methods and seasons. Our numbers are slowly but surely dwindling so there really is no time for bickering against one another.7 points

Buying points is a great thing to start for you young bucks...........Even if you don't have the time or money to do a hunt now but would like to someday, start accumulating points NOW. 10, 12 or even 15 years from now (blink of an eye, trust me) you'll be in great shape to draw a dynamite tag. We all have our own theories as to why hunters are dropping out, but not too many theories as to what to do about it. Most sign on to the weak attempts around special youth seasons. We throw our support around that thought and then declare that the problem is solved. I always thought that such programs are marginal at best in terms of effectiveness and instead supported more aggressive plans that in my mind would be a lot more effective. My favorite thought has always been for direct DEC involvement in public school assembly programs, and even school courses that taught outdoor activities including hunting and fishing. What a perfect way to recruit youth. Replies to that thought always involved a fair level of ridicule and comments that basically said that such a thing would never work and could never be accepted and implemented. Well imagine my surprise when I picked up the outdoor section of our local paper and learned that for the past 8 years, West Virginia has been doing exactly that and with an accompanying reversal in new license sales. Instead of the 20% drop in license sales over the last decade, they recorded an increase in sales of 9% per year since the school curriculum included a hunter education class. And apparently 6 other states have since introduced legislation to do exactly the same thing because of West Virginia's demonstrated success. A little out-of-the-box thinking has been applied with real positive and provable results. 17 states have passed laws to create "apprentice hunting licenses" which allows kids supervised by a trained mentor to sample the sport before completing the required 8-12 hour hunter safety course work. Other states have passed constitutional guarantees for hunting rights which essentially is a governmental endorsement of hunting. But here we are in NYS patting ourselves on the back for special youth seasons and then declaring success and walking away from any further thought on the subject. There are some states that are actually addressing the problem of shrinking hunter populations and showing positive results.2 points

I think this point is lost and can't be emphasized enough. the "modern" approach to hunting is much different than it used to be. There is a focus on hunting alone (or with one buddy) and taking a low pressure approach to get that wall mounter giant. Our hunting has gotten just like the kids sports. it is an all year event. trail cams, shed hunting. scent control, food plots, tree stand setting and on and on. Years ago it was more of a social event. As a very young kid I spent many a freezing day tagging along with Dad. I didn't look forward to sitting for hours on a hot seat in inadequate clothing, clinching a lighter fluid filled hand warmer for dear life becasue it was fun. The few minutes surrounding getting a deer every couple years was fun but it was the social aspect that was the draw for me. The stories, the ribbing each other, the tailgate lunches on state land parking areas, the early morning breakfasts and hearing the game plan for the day laid out like some Super Bowl chalk board talk. playing cards at night at a ratty old camp and having a dinner that would about harden your arteries from the first bite. Today it seems for many like more of an individual sport. it's a shame, I miss those days.2 points

This one was taken in the afternoon around 4pm. back in 2013, think November 7th? In the one picture, I snapped a picture of a small 5 point that almost walked right up to my stand. This big guy must of smelled his prints and followed his trail right to my stand as well. rest is history!!! 1st 10 pointer taken in my life. Great feeling. Last picture is his mount on my wall.2 points

If Raphael's name is on that list then that would give the allegations of affairs with 5 women a lot more credibility. Cruz just looks like a weirdo. I can't listen to him when he talks. When he shook his finger at the camera and said leave Heidi the hell alone, it reminded of George mcfly from back to the future talking to biff. Sent from my SM-T810 using Tapatalk2 points

You know, way, way back, somebody came up with another piece of technology that was all about making hunting a little bit easier. It was called a gun. When bow seasons were established, it was done exactly for the opposite reason of making things easier. It was done to up the challenge level. We seem to have finally completely buried that aspect of bow hunting and continue to march along that same path of "making it just a little easier". With that mentality, who really needs some special season? We have finally corrupted the basic reasons for a special bow season to a point where everything is considered legitimate simply on the precept of making things a little easier. And we are able to justify every incremental step using that same phrase. But what is lost now is the fact that bow season was meant to be a reversal of that mentality.2 points

Yeah people like to "bicker". Like when bowhunters said that bow season should be for bows, there were a bunch of people who wanted to argue with that, basically saying, "were coming into your season whether you like it or not, so move the hell over". Think that's bad, wait until the muzzleloaders say the same thing to the crossbow people. No matter what you may have worked years to set up, there are always those jealous people that come along afterward and want to shove their way in. And then the bickering begins. It is inevitable. There's always somebody who wants what you have. We all know that there are a whole lot of rifle hunters that would just love to have access to the bow season, and someday will be coming for it. And then, once again, you will hear "bickering". Get used to it. I won't end until there are no more "special seasons".2 points

That's good in theory, but deer don't do what you expect, moving a bi pod tripod or mono pod takes movement and time 2 things you try to minimize, maybe if your in a blind, still hunting, tree stand hunting when deer comes from behind, it's a whole new game.. not as easy , you have to learn a whole way to hunt2 points

Larry better get that thing checked, it's turning green. Maybe a topical cream for fungus or something. The vinegar only makes it smell tasty.2 points

And yet people miss completely with a gun every year ,and it's the epitomizes the top technology available. Getting close and controling yourself is a hard thing to master, some never do or do in part, it's the rush called buck fever.... a gun hunter who decides to take the course and pick up a crossbow has to learn to master this .. 30 yards is still max for most shots with a crossbow.. that alone can be unnerving to a lot of peope.I know someone who is an nys Olympic shooter but shakes so bad with a bow on a deer he has never taken one, and stopped hunting with it. He's fine with a gun though.2 points

My girl. I just put both pics in one image. Top pic is from X-Mas Eve a couple years ago. Bottom pic is from a camping trip early last summer. If you notice, she is guarding my beer gift in one and the steaks I am cooking in the other. LOL2 points

Grolsh in the cork top bottle! Then Stella Artois and Heineken. I mainly drink Bud though. I buy different beer from time to time depending on what looks good in the cooler. If I am camping, where I tend to get carried away and often pop a top around noon, it's usually either Bud Light or Coors Light.2 points

A THREE inch hole in the paper at 30 yards ? I would like to see a picture of that...A 3" pattern would nearly decapitate a gobbler at 30 yards. A pattern that dense would be a definite disadvantage to most hunters, who take their birds at normal ranges, from 20 to 40 yards...2 points

Fasteddie, you shot a crossbow 1x 40 yards . I assume it was off a bench..... hunting with one is a but different if you choose to hunt off the ground, still hunting, ect. My rifle can tack drive at 200 yards off a bench , only took 15 min to sight in, off hand I'm lucky to hit the target at 200 yards. ... Same will hold true for crossbow. I fell into the ease of shooting it, sighted in off a bench took it out hunting and it's unwieldy Ness cost me a shot a a very nice buck. 99% of all people against it seems have not tried it other than off a bench, or haven't tried it at all. Yes they are accurate if you can hold them steady while keeping the limbs clear of obstructions.1 point

Yes they are like wooly already said, combo peacock call, pilliated wood pecker. I have also used a silent dog whistle, a elk bugle, and a horn off a 82 Honda moped . All to great success An owl call works as well but those are other options1 point

Not 100 percent accurate you have to make sure bolt is seated right that you drew it back right holding it level and all that....it's not point and shoot....it's still a complicated piece of equipment that requires full attention while lining up shotSent from my SM-N920V using Tapatalk1 point

Why wait for a school program? Why can't we do it ourselves? If every single one of us gets at least person introduced to hunting so that they also become life long hunters, guess what? Our numbers double. I hear people say all the time. "Take your kids hunting. That's your responsibility as a hunter." No...to me, that's simply your responsibility as a father/mother.1 point
