  1. Since The Mermaid and and I have been together, she has talked about a gun that belonged to her father that was supposedly buried SOMEWHERE in her sister's cluttered upstairs, but hadn't been seen in years. Well, Sister Gracie called yesterday and said she had found the gun(s)..It turned out that there two of them. I hurried over to identify the long lost treasures. She brought them down the stairs wrapped in old pillowcases. The first one was an old Stevens M94 16 gauge single shot marked Wards Western Field. It has seen lots of use, and the bluing and case hardening are mostly gone.It has a plastic stock and forend, and the buttplate is missing. It seems mechanically sound and functional, but hardly rates as a valuable heirloom. It looks like the gun that kept in the milkhouse for years and years to deal with varmints around the barn. The OTHER one, however, was a jewel... It is a Winchester M1892 saddle ring carbine in 32-20. Despite years of neglect, it is still in at least NRA "Good" condition. The stock is sound , with a few dents and digs but no cracks. The barrel bluing is pretty good, with some surface rust and minor pitting. The receiver has more bluing wear, mostly from handling and carrying, I suspect. The screw heads are not buggered..It doesn't appear to have been taken apart by an amateur gunsmith. As far as I can tell the bore and rifling are in good shape, albeit in need of a good cleaning. The action is tight and crisp. All parts appear original. It was made in 1912. I am looking forward to giving a good (gentle) cleaning. I don't intend to shoot it. Perhaps we can find a nice place to display it and someday one of The Mermaid's sons or Grandsons will inherit it.

  3. I went back in this past weekend, 4/14-17/16 to camp and scout. I was the first canoe camper into Lows Lake this year, probably because the gate was closed and I had to cart my outfit in 3/4 mile to the put in. I surprised a good size deer standing in some water/grass but other than that saw no tracks or sign from the canoe. I spent some time around Tomar Mt again, not much sign, some trails but no old rubs. Again, I'm not your best or hardest hunter, pretty much just enjoy the big woods and the Adirondacks. I'll be heading back in come fall for sure. The wood stove came in handy, temps down to the low 20's in the morning. Canoe and campsite, Virgin Timber Landing west end of Lows Lake, 15' wood canvas Chestnut Chum, my tent evening with Tomar Mt in the background, Daytime scouting, ice had just left the lake so I hugged the shoreline. Pack contains my lunch, a set of clothes and some birch bark, matches punk wood for a quick emergency fire. Good trip.

  6. I only got one UGLY reliable turkey gun and you inspired me to waste a shot this morning on some of my finest art work, lol Now I remember why I'm happy to only shoot this thing once or twice a year! God damn that hurts! 25 yds and all is well with me for this season.

  7. I got up to the Adirondacks last weekend for some more shed hunting. I found a nice 4 point right away. Maybe a mid 130s buck, but pretty good for that area. (#53, 4/15/16) Fleur saving me the trouble of having to pick it up myself... Fleur found this ancient 4 point buried in the leaves. It looked to be 8-10 years old, maybe even older. Hard to believe the porcupines didn't get it. (#54, 4/15/16) Fleur came through again deep in a spruce swamp... It happened so fast I wasn't able to get good pictures. (#55, 4/15/16) I managed to find one more for myself at the end of the day. (#56, 4/15/16) Group photo:

  8. After a few years of searching for a Savage 10ML-II and not wanting to pay the 1,000 price tag they have come to be the past few years. I found one Saturday at the gun show in Syracuse for a very reasonable price. Could not be happier! I took the breech plug out and found everything to be pres tine. Only problem I had was getting the vent-liner out of the breech plug. The prior owner must have forgot to ant-seize the threads. Calling savage to get a new breech plug on order. My next test will to be to locate some IMR 4759 or some N110.

  9. Well this came back and is actually bigger than I remember. This is the only buck I have ever seen while hunting. Not surprising I guess since this last season was my first. I love the hole towards the end of the right antler. Another neat thing was a scar on his cheek the taxidermist said went most of the way through his skin. It all adds character. I put it on a piece of old oak that I pulled out of my brothers house during a remodel. We are guessing the board is at least 100 years old but probably much older.

  11. Thanks Grampy I do get alot of enjoyment up there at Lows, and with no wind it was great to be back. I scouted around and found a good supply of beaverwood for this falls trip too. I haven't fished Lows in many years but back in the day the floating bog was the place to be for bass. My campsite was close to that portage over to the Oswegatchie. My son and I did pretty good with the brookies above the falls one year, but we paddled in from Inlet. Thanks

  13. And not a fan. Over the years I've noticed a few times that birds a few days prior and after a full moon tend to get tight lipped. Talking to my brother he agreed He and Doc Pellham ( a few may have known him ) hunted quite a bit together and on one particular day had birds who sat in the tree tops nary a gobble until almost 10 and then the entire tree tops erupted. So my opinion to anyone going out for the youth hunt , don't give up hope if no gobbles at " go time ". Sit tight , birds may just be wonky with the moon and not touch off til later morning.

  16. I have been a diehard Mathew's owner for over 20 years now. (2 bows) But, after going to the Sportsman's show in Hamburg last month, and stopping at the S&S booth, I think I may make a switch to the "ELITE" brand now. Sooo, a new bow will be in store for me before the start of our bow season this fall.

  18. I too have found that full moon nights can keep birds on the roost a bit longer, in the morning. Looks like a good morning, weather wise for the young hunters on Saturday. Should be no problem if you have to wait them out a while. Best of luck to all who are participating!

  26. I've been collecting used toilet paper rolls since I was 17. You never KNOW what may have value some day. I keep them in the attic right next to my belly button lint collection. I'm starting to run out of storage space, but I'd hate to sell them for less than they might be worth a few years from now.

If only those casings could talk, I'm sure they'd have a lot of stories to tell! You can't put a price tag on sentimental value!

  33. This pic is of 3 of my great uncles in Italy. They were out rabbit hunting back in the late 30's, early 40's. The dogs were hunting when they started baying very different than when they were on a rabbit. My great uncle, standing on the passenger side running board, took off running towards them and found that they had encountered a pack of wolves. By the time he got there the wolves had already killed one of the dogs. My uncle raised his side by side and took aim at the first wolf. By the time the smoke cleared and his gun jammed somehow, he had killed three wolves. When my other uncles arrived the remaining wolves had run off. Needless to say it was a day that they wouldn't forget for as long as they lived. The only remaining great uncle still alive is the gentleman standing on the driver's side running board. He's in his mid 90's now and I call him every deer season from camp to tell him that we're there and he loves to hear how we are doing and how many deer we killed. He hasn't hunted in years but he loves to hear the stories. Least I could do is call him and let him live it through us.

  35. I agree with that statement 100%. It would just take a simple 5 questions each year when you buy your license. It could all be automated, and simple. That way you dont have a crap load of guys walking around saying things like "my voice doesnt count because I have never gotten a survey". Its about more than just accuracy.

  36. I checked some auctions and similar M92s in that condition are going for upward of $1500, maybe more if you find a collector who's looking for one. I may shoot it a few times, Grampy. It wouldn't hurt the value. Cool little carbine . If it had the oversized lever loop it would look just like the one John Wayne carried in many of his movies. And ya can take that to the bank, PILGRIM !

  37. You're wrong about that. They are living where there are not enough jobs, thanks to Democrat control of their economies for so long. The people who vote for Republicans in the south want jobs and a better life. It's the people who vote for Democrats down south that want the checks to keep coming.

  39. I agree with you there!!! You'll notice that most of those shows are filmed on private land with a lot of birds as well. That's the other part that is misleading to the new comers of this sport. It's not that easy as they make it out to be on those video's. On public lands where your in constant competition with others for the same birds, and hunter ethic's are thrown out the window to get a bird at all costs. yeah, it gets old watching those video's for sure.

  41. Will be headed out this afternoon to pattern my gun. Will be using those same XR's as you except in #4's. Going to try to see what they will do out of a new choke tube at 30-40-50 yards. Winchester 1300 with a 3" chamber and a Pattermaster code black .665 choke tube.

  42. I agree with uncle nicky. And I've always wanted to try different styles of spring turkey hunting, I'm sure afternoon hunting is slightly different than morning when it comes to strategies. But I'd like to see for turkey numbers first. I know we're only given 2 tags per spring but they all don't get filled with our half day hunts. And many areas have low turkey numbers. Which could be for many different reasons.. just saying Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk

  43. No reading comprehension issues here. Classy personal attack tho, coming from someone who always whines about seeing that on the site. Bored, yes. Bored of reading your typical novel style post. So yes, I'm sure I skimmed through and missed your meaning. I don't like your posts, so I don't spend much time on them. Trying to create controvery? No. You're the one who just can't let the crossbow issue go. Instead of trying to use your obviously superior grasp of the English language, to bore people into seeing things your way, maybe it's time to get over it. It's happening. Not if, when.

Unless he plans on getting organized and forming a special interest group to push what he wants changed none of this matters. And what in the hell is with that nasty part about Mike?
