  3. For Christmas I bought my daughter her first deer gun. A CVA Optima 50 cal. I figured she should get a few years of learning just how to use it before she will hit the woods with it (shes 12). A couple of weeks ago I had a great deal on some Vortex Crossfire II 3-9x40 scopes pop up on eBay, so I grabbed 2 of them. One for her and one to put on my Encore. I had been using an old Bushnell on my Encore for the last year or so and I hated that piece of crap. The other day I popped the scopes on the two guns. I think I got the rings on the CVA backwards, so I have to change those around. I cant wait to take her out and get her started with it after turkey season is over.

  6. I can be as harsh a critic of the DEC as anybody, but even I have to recognize what a difficult job it must be to take on some of the major problems that have developed over the years. Just looking at the diversity of conditions, habitat, culture, and populations kind of points up the difficulty factor. And then consider that the majority of NYS that the DEC is responsible for is privately held properties that they have no direct management of. Lately, I tend to soft-pedal my criticisms quite a bit. The only thing that still can get to me is the arrogant attitudes of infallibility that comes out at most of these kinds of communications to the public. When you listen to their presentations, they seem to be selling the fact that they have everything under control, and it is only the stupid sportsmen who are too ignorant to understand how perfectly they are able to manage all things concerning the environment. Sometimes I think they would get a whole lot more support if they would drop the arrogance and admit that they don't really have everything under control and likely never will have that capability. Anyway, I will once again listen to their story and try to sift through what has a high likelihood of being fact vs. what is wishful thinking.

  8. I had a chance to toy with one a few weeks ago. I ended up getting a pair of ATT models this week. There are Verizon models but are more expensive to buy and run. Set them up and I have to say this cam is pretty fun and has a ton of new capabilities. The phone app is convenient and useful. I can check battery voltage, change settings and then some. Even request higher res images. I am receiving 1280 size pics, double the 640 of prior cell cams I have used. I can also give guest access to others to see pics. That's good for family or club ground. Cam is built well case wise. Solid battery banks and batteries will not pop out on you in the field. This cam is black flash and has good illumination for black flash as I am getting usable pics at 30 to 40 feet. Haven't tested beyond that yet. I'll have it deployed out of the backyard and in the woods this week. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  9. being around the capital district and dealing with the state, you can't just tell them they're failing and what they NEED to do. it'll just promote selective hearing. dealing with any state entity you have to ignore the their persuasions that they've got everything under control. no state entity is going to be open about screwing up unless it's blatantly obvious to the general public. none of this deer management stuff is, even though some of us hunters can clearly see it. instead you relentlessly bring something up as a "concern by the public in general". also in open public meetings be polite and "put the spin" on your concern same as DEC does. others in the crowd may very well may back you up.

  12. Had to share my excitement. Ordered exactly what I wanted from black widow and she shoots as good as she looks. So happy with it. The deer should be afraid, very afraid. Lol And not too shabby for a 58" hunting bow:

  13. This is why anyone who references the Huffington Post needs to check his education. Self defense denies an attacker his rights? What? What even needs to be said about this? It's so blindingly moronic it wouldn't be worth posting about except that there are so many people that let websites like HuffPo do their thinking for them. If we (gun owners) were the monsters they portrayed us as, they would be afraid to speak out against us. http://downtrend.com/71superb/huffpo-shooting-in-self-defense-is-illegal-because-it-denies-violent-criminals-a-fair-trial

  14. Pretty soon, when the anti-gun politicians finally get the laws they want, anyone will be able to make one phone call and all of your firearms will be taken. You will, by law, then be denied the right to 2nd Amendment self defense for 3 weeks. Then you will be able to petition the court to have them returned. I'm sure the deck will be stacked against you at that time too. It's happening right now in California and you can be sure it will spread to every state, that already does everything it can to infringe on your right to bear arms. Firearm owners are letting this happen without a fight. It's a disgrace. http://www.thefederalistpapers.org/us/california-lawmaker-wants-to-expand-secret-gun-confiscations

  16. For landscapes/static subjects you can try HDR as suggested. For a single frame though, if the dynamic range of the scene exceeds the range that your camera can capture there isn't really anything you can do. The "answer" is to shoot at times when the dynamic range is lower such as early or late in the day, or when it is slightly overcast. Harsh, direct mid-day light generally sucks for photography. You can retreat to the shade, but if you are getting dappled light through the canopy it won't be any better (can actually be worse).

  23. I'll roost sat evening. Though I'm sure they will be in their normal roost areas. I can narrow it down to 50 yards or so roosting the night before instead of 100 to 150 yards.

  24. I have no idea how it would handle all the variables of negotiating the heavy snows (some of which should not be attempted by any kind of ground-traction vehicle). But I think it is a great idea. I spent a lot of decades commuting around 40 miles (each-way) in all kinds of weather, and in the company of all kinds of idiots stalking the roads, and the romantic aspects of driving left me a long time ago. I would have been very happy to have reliable technology take over that aspect of my life. I would have had a couple more hours of sleep every day so I could have stayed awake longer at home and actually got something useful done instead of babysitting and piloting a pile of steel-on-wheels through the countryside.

  29. I'll buy that, Doc. I think one of the biggest problems, is that the DEC is into too many things these days. Years ago, they seemed like they were doing a good job. Of course, that was before they were tasked with fifty million other issues.

  30. It would be nice to be able to buy a car without a lot of expensive technology and government mandated upgrades. The cost of new cars rises with each of these things. Plus, the technology tends to be defective when it hits the used car market for those who can't afford a new car. There will also be massive lawsuits when it fails and someone is killed, further increasing the costs of the car and it's insurance, passed on to consumers. You may be willing to trust your life to mindless technology, but I'm not.

  31. Att models runs around low 300s for a deal. Most in the mid 300. Verizon is usually 50 or 100 more. Running the cam with the app and the data plan is around 11 a month but you can start and stop service without issue. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  38. Drivers have had it so rough these past few decades.... I can only imagine how much work it was to drive before all these technological break throughs. - sattelight radio - televisions - rear bumper cams - ABS - P/S- P/W- P/M- P/L - AWD - GPS - A/C - Heated seats - side mirror defrosters - air bags - automatic seat belts - zone temperature control - crumple zones - direction signals - horns - road sensing suspension - automatic transmissions - key fab door lockers - windshield wipers and blue joooice - all weather radials - synthetic oils I'm sure I left a ton out, but don't forget the most important "Jetsons-age" innovation..... ******* IDIOT LIGHTS and cup holders! I can think of no other reason why America is becoming a nation of fat LAZY people....rob! Where the hell have you been? The damned things practically drive themselves already in case you haven't noticed. Don't think because you turned a few dials and punched a few buttons you get the crown of "Mr Motivation".... good grief!

  40. I think turkey are very aware with everything going on above them, sometimes more-so than what's happening down on the ground at their level. I was watching some birds out in the field the other day when a vulture shadow suddenly appeared to be chasing them to the edge of the woods. Those birds had their eyes glued to the sky until they identified it as harmless and made their way back into the open. From a hunting point of view. I've been picked off in a stand by MANY fall turkey while bow hunting. Spring turkey hunting from a stand just doesn't appeal to me in the least. I'd rather have them gobblin' and spittin' in my face no matter how much harder it is to remain motionless and hidden.

  41. Nada. Youth hunting last Saturday, no action. Sunday we had 2 birds at 200 yards displaying for 45 minutes but couldn't coax them in any closer. Tipped over 13 birds from my tree. Hoping for the best. Perhaps a double for daughter and I. That's my hunting fantasy at least. I'd give anything for that double though

  45. Our saturday was a little bit of a let down, i didnt get a chnace to roost any birds friday night so we setup on a great roost spot. The weather was quite crappy, Thick fog, rain and some wind.. that didnt clear out til close to noon, and we could only hunt til 9 saturday morning. Well long story short, not one bird flew out nor gobbled anywheres nearby. until about 630am a bird gobbled behind us about 600 yards out in or near the "big" field... We made a move and setup on what was atleast 4 or 5 birds.. sounded like full fans mixed with jakes.. couldnt see with the fog. Well we tried our hardest to work some magic but whether it was us or the weather.. the deal went in the birds favor.. they gobbled to every 2 or 3 of our calls but seemed to have no interest in committing. The boy still had fun watching the squireels and seeing the several dozen deer we encountered. He kept saying i hope we get one, i hope we get one. I told him i hope so too, but just dont get upset if we dont. the day will come that we get you one.. until then were gonna learn these birds, and thats the best part. He smiled and agreed. that ended our Saturday hunt, later that day after my events ended he asked if i could take him out during the regular season so he could sleep in on sunday instead. lol, i said happily that would not be a problem. so Sunday was a sleep in day for myself. was bummed a tad only because the weather was much better, and the action may have been too, but we will chase them again soon.. Congrats to all the kids and mentors that successed, youth seasons are awesome.

  46. Took my little cousin out Saturday morning for the youth hunt. Right off the bat had a love struck tom in full strut spitting and drumming all the way down to us. I think the nerves got to him a little bit as he let one rip before I could talk him through the shot. The bird was in full strut with his head tucked firmly against his body and you could guess what happened. After a few minutes of learning from the situation, I struck up another bird within 15 minutes of the previous shot against the same exact tree. Getting a little aggressive with the calling and a few double triple gobbles from him we had this bird hook line sinker. We watched this bird strut all the way across the field to 15 yards. Nolan made sure this bird wasn't getting away! He did everything right in my eyes this time and we had a bird down and happy camper. The hunt will go down as one my best turkey hunts to date. Bird had 9" beard and sported 1" spurs. PS. Forgot to add both the miss and the kill are on film!

  47. Thanks for checking them out guys! Wildcats- I just use an entry level DSLR. Nikon D-3200 with a slow 55mm-300mm F/ 4.5 - 5.6 Nikon lens. I shoot most all of my critters in aperture priority. When I moved my blind last night, I did so with the rising sun in mind. The first pic I posted here is the money shot I was looking to get, so I was pretty pumped when I got home to see the sunlight glowing through his fan the way I had planned! Sometimes my best hunting set ups are not the best photography set ups, and vice versa. Whenever I have a chance to "scout" an area, I try to pay attention to the little things that will make for the best photo shots as well as the places I can kill an animal when the time finally arrives. I don't hesitate to snap a TON of shots as well and sort through the best of the set when I have time. I took over 300 pics out there today with these guys.... these were just the first ten that I got around to working on.
