Been hearing reports of nesting snappers so I shot out to look for a few this evening. No luck with them, but I did find a couple green herons hunting frogs down in the crick. These things normally give me fits trying to get close enough to them. Today they acted like I was invisible! Must have been drunk on frog slime,lol

I've read some reports that it took the kids several minutes to make it through the obstacles before he was able to enter the gorilla pen. The mother was busy trying to take the perfect selfie at the time. Multiple witnesses said that the kid was hammering about entering the gorilla pen for several minutes but yes, kids do say the darnedest things. Those witnesses also said they watch the kid struggle for several minutes to enter the pen. Several problems here if all of this is true. #1. I understand when you take your eyes off of your kid for a split second, they can get into trouble. But to take your eyes off of your kid for several minutes? Forget that you're near a dangerous animal, what about the large crowd of people? You're not afraid of your kid wandering off with some stranger? #2. If all these people saw a 4 year old scaling a fence and crawling through thick bushes, after they had heard him say he was going to go into the gorilla pen, no one said anything or tried to do something. It's a total breakdown of society. Lastly, I do honestly think the gorilla was trying to protect the kid but also, having never handled one, did not know how fragile there are. He was probably threatened when the crowd start yelling more violent than what he was use to. All the dragging he did with the kid was to eventually find a quieter corner which he settled into. I think an innocent gorilla was killed. I think the zoo did the right thing for killing it. I think this whole tragic event could have been avoided if the mother would have paid more attention to her child. I have a paid family membership to the Bronx Zoo so I take my son there several times a year since all my visits are free after my annual payment. The Kodiak Bear and Polar Bear exhibit is setup the same way. A wooden post fence, a think strip of bushes, and a moat separates the bears from the audience. I have a firm grip of my son's hand at all times in that area. Even in the children's petting zoo area, I'm still no more than an arms reach from him. Not just for his safety but also just in case he grabs a chicken a little too violently so I'm also doing so for the animals sake.

Went out Thursday evening and caught some oh so nice stripers. Check it out..

I love pits, & wouldn't own any other breed. But if you can't control them, and don't train them right, you shouldn't own one.

Back around 1968 or 69, I went up to Gasport to hunt pheasants opening day, back when there WERE lots of pheasants to hunt. Three of us drove into Buffalo and visited a few ballets on Chippewa Street the night before season opened. One of the places had a girl dancing who must have weighed 400 pounds..She looked kinda like LULU on Hee Haw.. One of the guys that was with me was fascinated by her and was right up front watching her jiggle around the stage. She finally looked down at him and said " You ain't MAN enough, Honey !..."

you said it, a bigger fine for poaching is great. this is going to happen. only the most brazen poachers will still do it with increased fines. majority of your poachers only do it or continue because the fines are small to the point it would get reduced to nothing. poachers do get caught. It's already law to report your deer, it just needs to be pushed to be enforced. I only think that reporting an unused tag would eliminate the inclination by DEC to think it may have been filled. so I would be for it, but a law like that isn't as easily pushed through the process. this one is feasible given the system and process needing to be dealt with. if anyone reading this hasn't contacted Flanagan's office yet they should. the bill needs to get voted on in the next week if it's to be passed in time for the beginning of this hunting season, as the senate goes into recess and the law has a grace period to take effect. sooner we get this passed the sooner we can focus on other legislation to help make the deer hunting better. like putting it into law that we have "the right to hunt and fish". right now it's a legislative privilege that isn't guaranteed year to year, although it's taken for granted that it'll be there.

how close you are to a substation or utility poles to tie in makes a big difference. also the infrastructure of the utility is somewhat unknown. they need to be able to support the power coming into the grid real time. it isn't stored in batteries or anything and then dumped into the grid when it's convenient.

I've caught dozens of snappers but the biggest ones I've ever seen are in Harwood Lake, true dinosaurs in there and lots of them!

Daughter just sent me this from my folks house. There is NO surrounding woods for a mile or more and nothing but houses around. Dang, wish she could have gotten more of my folks incredible flower garden, lol. He's prepping for the Lancaster Garden Walk again this year

Both my grandfather's served and were both there on d day. One grandfather was on the ground, he took a round in his shoulder earning one of his two purple hearts that day. My other grandfather was in the air that day, he was a navigator. I always think how lucky I am they both made it through that day and the war, otherwise I wouldn't be writing this. Im not in favor if a wall. It will be a burden in the taxpayers once again. just cause im not in favor if a wall doesn't mean i am happy with our current situation. But you gave some good points in your response that would curb illegals. How about we start enforcing our laws already!!! Lol. Thats where we could start. Also look at why people are coming. If we didn't incentivize them they wouldnt come illegally. Hit them in their pockets and we solve the problem. But we have politicians who pander to illegals for votes yet on the other side we have farmers who hire illegals to save a buck. Lets heavily fine those who knowingly hire illegals. and the people whonare already here illegally we need to make them taxpayers. Nobody is getting rid of them and thats the reality if the situation. but the laws in place need To be enforced and we can no longer incentivize illegal aliens.

I think you really hit the nail on the head. Most deer in the big woods are killed within a distance that most any gun can be effective. The most important thing is confidence in your weapon/caliber of choice. Most times in the woods you don't have time to range and get settled before taking your shot so confidence and comfort with your chosen weapon is very important in killing the deer.

Same here. Been running a "trap line" around the yard for about a week now. Must have caught 100 of the little diggers already on 3 sets. Just using a few sunflower seeds on them so no gooey mess. Might have to do a euro for a nice addition to the trophy room,lol

Awesome bucks, but they will most likely die of old age if not hit by a car. With little or no hunting access it is cool, to at least see what a few years of age can do for a whitetail buck.

This is a horrible pic because they were way at the edge of my lens' range, but I snapped away anyhow. The story that leads up to this is the best part. I'm so happy to have been there to witness it all first hand! I'll load some more from this encounter when I have time!

Thanks for checking them out everyone! WJ- they are Reds no doubt about it. This den has been active each spring for well over 30 years now. I have a few sightings this year of momma red leaving the den. Suprisingly, you guys seem more understanding of my encounters than some folks on a photog forum I post on but I'm in no mood to argue with them. In their opinion, I may as well have killed these little guys on site by getting so close and "conditioning" them to human interactions. I certainly understand the point they are trying to make, but I don't think they realize my history with these dens on a yearly basis. Some have even taken my attempt at humor with the "Kibbles and Bits" comment at face value,lol
