  5. Firearm bear is In Dec for 6 or more days. Oct this year will be the first bear bowhunt since the 50s or 60s I think but don't quote that. It's gonna run 3 days, than 3 w muzzleloader. Bears are one of easiest animals to kill w bow usually expiring under 40 yards w even 15 yards being common. Not sure why but they die easy. You wanna see spots pm me n I'll show you areas to try. You can even bait if you stay on ground but there's so many you prob wouldn't need to

  8. Guys I don't see the crossbow alone doing much damage even though I dont like em they are limited range. The number of guys who try may increase n that could up the harvest. Bear in mind guys who don't bowhunt may not automatically get within the 20 yards or so. Don't think crossbows alone w decimate herds

  9. You are losing me a little bit with the sniper thing. My position on the wall is that if we build the wall under a Trump presidency. It will have a lasting effect. So when the people elect a progressive down the road the wall will still do its job. We already know that liberal progressives will not enforce the laws in place.

  10. thanks to all for the congrats and good wishes. spent the first few days of my retirement at our property in Franklinville. always something to do at a camp. I think I am mentally prepared for this...... a couple of stands to put up with shooting lanes to clear, another trail cam or two to put up, a new rifle to sight in, traps to clean and prepare for trapping season, a couple of properties to check out where owners want some critters removed, a new motor on my old boat that needs to be wore out fishing, the company I retired from gave me several hundred dollars in fishing stuff ( glad I did not get a watch) so I need to see how many of those lures I can loose. and the list can go on. I think my mind is in the right place. thanks again to all.

  11. Who cares whether a crossbow is archery or not. They aren't loud powder burning guns either. Quiet enough not to ruin anyone's archery hunt. So let them be used in early season. Yes, they are easier than a compound, which is easier than a recurve, which is easier than a spear. Again, who cares. Let the hunter decide his preferred challenge level. I have said it before, but I would prefer to see someone hunt with a crossbow than a compound if they are more likely to injure game with the compound. Why should a hunter be required to hunt with whatever level of challenge I choose. As long as the archery season isn't ruined with shots going off (yes I realize that happens for the short youth season and am fine with that), I don't care what legal weapon a hunter uses.

  12. To me this isn't a breed issue. While some breed have been "designed" for specific characteristics, there are good and bad in each breed. I am more of a supporter of dealing with the problems. to me if a dog bites or attacks it goes down. no questions. 5 pounds or 200. I won't own a biter.

  14. Agreed 100%. The unfortunate difference, is that a Pit has a lot more ass than most other dogs. When a Pit does bite, it's going to do more damage than a shitzu. Again though, I love them. I think I'm finally ready to get another one. I've been looking at rescue Pits lately. Can't wait.

  18. Logged on to huntingNY and a 24Hr Campfire thread broke out. You should post this over there.....they love pitbull's are the demon seed threads. LOL I have a rescue pit. Good dog. But frankly the minature schnauzer I grew up with was a total POS that would bite anyone, even us kids. It liked my mother..... I blame the owners not the breed.

  22. They are according to the IBO, several other archery organizations, and way more than 50% of the states. There is one reason that someone chooses a compound over a trad bow - they want or need something easier. There is no other - trad bows have been used effectively for 1000's of years. Just have to put in the time to become proficient and/or accept some limitations. Kind of funny how 2 recurve hunters on this thread support full inclusion, but some compounders want their level if easy to be the bar. There is a word for that.

  24. Have have seen bears in 4 spots of public hunting lands in the early bear season zone in Orange county. Bad-part is the Palisades commission doesn't allow firearms until Nov. 1 in Sterling Forest, which is where 3 of those spots are. I have had 3 encounters and a sighting in the distance of single bears while out turkey hunting this Spring. I am seriously considering a bear hunt for the first time (just don't tell my wife).

  25. So coming home from finding cam vandalism I check out the trees in plot...deer broke top off of the Dunstan I planted last year( tubed and fenced)..go to check the peaches and I round one side of fencing, Angel the other. I nearly stepped on the little thing and it pops up under my foot and runs...right into Angels face!..Well I heard my alter ego emerge(,I call it the drill Sargent) when a resounding baritone NO! emerged from my mouth...Angels head swung my way and then back to the fawn as it dashed behind the weeds to under the blind..Again NO!...She is such a good dog...though I could see in her eyes....." but Mom PLEASE!"...I can't blame her for wanting to chase...they don't normal nearly jump into her mouth...she never moved a muscle....lol...She stayed one step behind me all the way home with the Eeyore look on her face...

  27. I understand the sentiment and shoot nearly daily so that I can hunt with a barebow recurve. But really, why should someone BE REQUIRED to show the same level of dedication to hunt early season. I hear the same crap about compounds on traditional bow sites. I would prefer to give everyone the opportunity whether they want to work harder or not. As long as its not hurting my hunt, I don't care. Honestly "the you should work harder to hunt this season" argument is a slippery slope unless you are at the bottom of that slope - i.e. hunting with a homemade selfbow, wood arrows and flint heads.

  28. They are either archery equipment or they are not. A crossbow does not morph into something else when different people shoot it.

  31. I heard that the first two head shots, at the kid missed and that the third accidentally hit the gorilla in a very soft part of its otherwise very dense skull, and killed the poor innocent being, ..Sons of Bitches!!!!! Also the zoo was using cheap reload .243 ammo, in order to save money. Those cheap rounds are known for being inaccurate.!!!!!

  33. Thanks guys! I enjoy this too much to make a job of it moog. It's easy to see past my screw ups and imperfections when there's nothing on the line. My editing style and knowledge are too basic, and I'd rather shoot with no added pressure or expectations. I'm always on the move stones unless I'm shooting deer at dusk. Most anything I find while hiking through preferred areas at specific times of year. I really don't have the patience to wait for critters to show up so I'm almost always active and look for them where I think they'll be. The only exception is once I find what I'm looking for sometimes I have a hard time walking away from it. I've gotten so wrapped up in taking pics that I looked up and couldn't remember where I was,lol Once I find what I'm after I just try to keep up with it... or at least one step ahead of it by predicting what it will do next. Ha- I also wouldn't be able to get away with that if I was on someones payroll! OSHA regs and all,lol....

  34. Doc I m like you went from the corp world to retirement and never looked back. Started my own little archery shop and had it running for about 12 years, then wife asked me to close down so we did not have all the traffic at odd hours at the house. Now it still is a great place to live, have my own 32 target 3D course setup on 5 acres of land. Have one or two buddies that I shoot weekly with. Love to fish in the local ponds. Life is good for me at 75. Most of all still the best wife in the world who put up with this old fool. Great kids and now grand kids.

  35. I know there is a lot of discussion on the use of crossbows. Especially those in the bow hunting camp. But that being said what about allowing those 60 and over given an exemption to use the crossbow all bow season. Seems we are making many exemptions for youth hunting but what about the elderly hunters who have filled the coffers all these years. They have paid their dues and should be afforded an exemption also. JMHO

  36. I just read an article that summarizes a great recent study performed by North Carolina State University. The article explains that "the six-state study, part of the eMammal project, used citizen science camera traps to determine whether recreation activity disrupted wildlife in 32 protected forests. Researchers did side-by-side comparisons of protected areas with similar habitats but different hunting regulations, and compared sites on and off hiking trails." This reinforces the findings in the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources study done twenty years ago that found Raccoon Hunting has no effect on Deer movement. I would like to find the actual study data and see if they involved any parks near me. One interesting finding was that while hunted species were found slightly less frequently, predators were found more frequently. Especially Coyotes! What I derive from this is that it is not the activity that impacts the animals. It is changes in activity that impacts them. Suddenly flooding the woods on opening day of Deer season has an impact. Consistently hound hunting the property does not. Read more at: http://phys.org/news/2016-06-hiking-minor-effects...

  44. I watched that with skepticism, being CNN has a liberal agenda. The story is a joke. But what's funny is it only proves Trump right. He said he's going to build the wall with precast and it is going to cost 10 billion. That's exactly what they said would be best and exactly what the cost would be. What's laughable about the story is, cinder blocks haven't been made in 70 years or so. The poured concrete example was also a joke. What kind of climate is the Hoover dam in? Diplomat to your point that the wall will cost us money out of our pocket. Trump has said he will offset the cost with the trade deficit we have with Mexico. Even if that proves not true. I would rather spend taxpayer money productively, putting people to work and cutting off a flow of continued tax burdens coming here. One other thing. The wall would be a great symbol of commitment to enforcing our border. We have been duped for thirty years, allowing our country to slowly be invaded. The wall speaks volumes. I agree with you that your ideas would work. But only with leadership that wants it to work. Another Obama in office and he pulls the resources away and they start flowing in again.

  46. Sorta on a side note. I've always suspected my dad of 92 was in WW II but never had positive confrimation as he's never talked about it. He has a 30-40 Krag with ramp sights I've thought maybe from the war. I asked my 2 older brothers and 2 older sisters and all were aware but said he declined to ever talk about it. Sorta feel jipped not knowing where he was but NOT going to ask if he's avoided talking about it for 70 years. My sister sent me these pics. Marine ! The only reason I got confirmation was about month ago he was in hospital and nurse asked if he was a veteran and he said "yes".
