  1. Sat at a spot last night with hopes of filling a doe tag. Around 4 pm had 3 deer move through but too far off. Then moments later had a solo deer off in the distance work in my direction to pop out at 30 yards through some thick stuff. I saw rack and my heart started thumping. I got to my feet and while waiting for a moment to draw I got hit hard with buck fever! He started working to within 20. He was facing me head on. Ha legs shaking and I thought I was gonna pass out. I was in mid draw and he picked me off. I was stuck. Between being cold hungry and shaking from the fever i was a hot mess. I couldn't control my legs shaking and he bolted! I grunted and stopped him around 30 yards. I finished my draw out the pin on his body and let it rip. Shot went higher than I wanted and I heard a CRACK! He bolted and the arrow fell out in 15 yards and that's all I saw of him. Thought I got 6" of penetration from my perspective in the tree. Instantly I thought I hit shoulder from the sound and reaction. Called my dad and buddy and said I just hit the shoulder of a buck. My heart must have been 200 beats a minute. I waited 30 seconds and got to the ground. I sat at the base of the tree till dark and then went to the impact spot. Immediately I saw blood in snow. I said man muscle blood? Then I followed blood to the arrow. I love rage hypodermics but the hypo shaft that screws into the insert broke off! Wth! Never had that happen, but the arrow shaft was covered in blood! I left the arrow and in the snow I saw the prints and kept following the spray paint of blood. I said maybe I got lucky. I looked up and saw body! Couldn't believe it. He went all of 50 yards. Didn't hear a crash between the snow and me crying on the inside. He was dead in about 4 seconds which I feel great about. I was so pumped with emotions. Biggest NY deer for me and first tag that was used in the late season. Upon field dressing the broadhead shaft broke while cracking a far side rib. Blood trail was insane. Gonna enjoy this one for a while! Threw him in the truck, grabbed a pick , filled out my tag proudly and drove to my dads house to share the story. Thanks for reading boys! 4. So my dad dropped me off today. He retires in a week and will be spending the fall/winter in florida . He won't be hunting anymore , I made a point to thank him for 25 years as my hunting partner and mentor . I had to keep it short and sweet ,I know it was emotional for me and i could tell it as for him a little bit. We never really express feelings like that ,never have.

  6. Made some hellish drives thru snow lately but I don't do ice.Freezing rain at 32 degrees. Got dressed , drove 4 blocks and came back home. Gear off , on couch watching tv for a few hours. Slid thru 2 stop signs. On a straight away I gave it a little gas and almost went sideways. No sit it in the woods is worth driving on ice in the hills for. Careful everyone and hope to join you later

  7. I have hunted over my Airedales for birds most of my adult life with pretty good success, they are flushers and when hunting with flushing dogs as long as the hunter can keep up with their dog to the point of the flush so the bird is in range all is good. At this stage of the game I am still taking my share of birds but keeping up with my Airedales is getting tougher as the years pass and I finding myself missing more and more opportunities because of out of range flushes. Around ten years ago I decided to try out a pointing breed, an English Setter male named "Stickers". I could not have been more happier or pleased he was a great bird dog and I had a ball with him on upland game and we took our share. He was a foot hunter's bird dog deluxe he worked fairly close and was staunch on point and as long as you could walk you would kill as many birds as you wanted with that guy. As fate would have it Stickers for what ever the reason had a stroke at only four years of age, I did all I could for him but after a couple of weeks he faded away and passed. Been raising hunting dogs all my life and this was a first and to say I was devastated would be putting it mildly. This is a painting of Stickers done by my grand daughter So for the next few years I just continued to hunt birds with one of my Airedales with decent results but I sure missed Stickers. Although I toyed around with getting another Setter I never pulled the trigger that is until a month ago when surfing the web just looking of course I found a litter within driving distance that I really liked. To make a long story short I took the drive and came home with a little girl whom I named Matilda, Matty for her call name. I am in love with this little gal and she is doing everything I want so far, I will still have to hunt this fall with one of my Airedales but next year Matty should be pointing birds for me if all goes well., I can't wait! 10. I didn't take up bow hunting until I was older (in my 40's) and my young son at the time became very interested in hunting with a bow. Additionally, I have my own property and decided to get some more use out of it to compensate me for the high property taxes we pay in this state. Boy did i get an awakening. I began to see huge bucks that I had never seen before and that disappeared as soon as gun season started. My first buck with a bow turned out to be the biggest buck I have ever taken. I had actually seen this buck several times and saw him run off all the other bucks on my property before I took him. I have taken many nice deer since. I enjoy the beautiful Fall colors during the early bow season, the mild weather, and the additional challenge and satisfaction of taking deer with a bow. As for my son who is now a young married man, he is addicted to bow hunting and takes all of his vacation during bow season. valoroutdoors.com

  15. I love bow hunting but my true passion is chasing bucks in the ADKS. I bow hunt up there as well but the success rate is about 0. Honestly I like the whole year other than summer. I'm looking forward to deer season being over so I can start chasing bunnies and freezing my codds off ice fishing. After that I'll be trolling for trout and salmon until I can hunt wood chickens then I'll be lake trout fishing until it gets too hot. Not long after that I'll be sweating climbing in a stand with the bow. We are truly blessed to have it all in NY. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  22. I generally just tip waitresses, bartenders and the pizza delivery guy. Many years ago my parents used to leave a fifth of Seagram's in the mailbox every xmas for the mailman. At that time we had to walk about 1/4 mile to the mailbox because the route did not come down our road. I got lots of good exercise walking back and forth to the mailbox every day checking to see if my " Captain America secret de-coder ring" had arrived yet.

  23. Yes I own one. And the pic I posted was a way of saying - let's get real here - these cams are in tough environments and we must maintain reasonable expectations. Build up of snow and ice has more to do with the Indian than the bow. Setup matters. I've sold around $25k in cameras this year doing it as a hobby. I can assure you that you're the only one who has ever said this is a design flaw. Get used to it - more cam companies will be using this general design. Browning uses it. Reconyx uses it. Bushnell uses it. Generally speaking - the best cams on the market use it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  33. I remember calling in a gobbler for my wife. Big tom. She killed it. The whole experience is a very fond memory. What made it great was that the guy who owned the local sporting goods store came striding across the field saying..."didn't you hear me calling?" If you hadn't shot that bird I would have killed him." I just laughed and laughed. He was a decent guy, but what we used to call a big blowhard. I said, "Denny...you just made this a perfect day!"

  35. First thing I would ask is what do you consider an old doe? The next thing I would ask is how do you tell how old a doe is without looking at the teeth. You can’t use size that can vary considerably unless you are looking at fawns. You can’t use whether or not a doe has fawns or not 25% of all fawns born in the spring will have fawns next spring. Saying it looks old is just a guess. So all you can do to age a doe on the hoof is take a WAG.

  41. Headed back out about 1:45 to my in laws. I still hunted the whole time while trying to skirt the edges around where my buddy was sitting. He saw 4 total, 2 of them I pushed to him but over 100 and moving through the hardwoods so no shot. I saw 6 and only had 1 shot opp but passed as it was right on the poster line. Between morning and afternoon I saw 10, shot once this morning and hit a tree. Back after them in the morning and then all day Tuesday.
