  1. Animal loving anti hunter ! I ive been going for two impinged shoulders, after a few visits you get to know each other pretty well which helped. Today I told her that the day before I shot my bow to see how it went, ( three arrows only all in the center dot of the block at 20-25 yards) I could tell by her look all I needed to know. She could not hold back ,first saying "why do I choose to hunt them in such a cruel and painful way,as bow hunting causes great suffering. That was great to hear as I knew she did not know much just the bs from the PETA types, this allowed me to educate her while respecting her opinions. I got to explain that bow hunting was more of a challenge and that slob hunters don't want to do all that hard work bow requires, Bow hunted deer are " natural ,in there patterns and behaviors, the challenge is figuring it out. That a large percentage of deer I have bow killed never even knew they were shoot with an arrow, just snapped their head up looked around and went back to feeding, that most fall over in sight of my stand. She thought we lost most hit by arrows or that guys just shot them and never looked for them or just cut off the antlers. I got to address all those concerns. I told her I have killed deer by bow shotgun, rifle ,handgun, muzzle loader and car. That bow was a clean fast kill if both lungs were taken out,the car was the worst, and gun is clean and fast but some will tend to take risky shots in gun ,and we need to change that. What I,learned, she really liked that I said a little prayer after taking a deer, giving thanks for allowing me to,take an animal in a clean fast way. That she was very concerned with deers being hit by cars, and after one talk almost admitted hunting may be a better choice ,that the misconceptions of leaving deer to rot ,bad shots, pin cushiony deer, slob hunters is our biggest obstical to over come because her thoughts were not close to reality ,but by letting her talk then calmly explaining the facts and truth,it went rather well. Now we'll see if she fixes my shoulder in time for now season! My draw arm is mostly ok it's the left arm that hurts just holding the bow at full draw.

  2. It is an illness, suffered by many, understood by few. The only treatment is to sit in solitude in a tree stand or with another sufferer of this affliction. There is no known cure, though there is speculation that relentless purchase of hunting equipment would alleviate some of the symptoms, the results are inconclusive. The first step is admitting you have a problem, a difficult task for some, impossible task for most of us in the early stages of development, becoming easier as time go's on. My name is Fred, and I am a Deer Hunting Addict......

  3. You have obviously never seen Ted debate. When he debates he is all business and serious. The crazy persona is for the stage and the press. When he is one on one with an anti, he is serious and professional. And he knows the facts! Neither Obama, nor Hillary would ever even consider trying to best him in a debate.

  6. I'm watching Fox News and the Sears Optical commercial comes on. The lady in her robe is calling her kitty in from the back yard and instead of a kitty, a raccoon comes strolling in...................... Then you see the 'coon laying in bed with her!! Time for an eye exam......................................LOL

  7. Look into the rifle country of the Catskills. Lots of public land up there as well as some private land where owners will give permission if you ask prior to November.

  8. Love my model 94AE it is a great brush/short range gun. Most of my shots are relatively close. Easy to carry, follow ups are simple and it works. 3 bucks to its credit. Great round, good luck!

  9. Lol ..... careful you don't throw a shoulder out of joint with all that patting yourself on the back. Wouldn't that be a treat to hunt with somebody that never tires of telling you how great he is. I'm sure that gets real tired real quick.....Ha-ha. Oh and then gets his jollies by telling you that your deer harvest is substandard. That's just the personality (or lack thereof) that we need in hunting.

  10. I have a friend who uses a .44mag carbine for deer with "battle peep". i would say 100 yards is about max for the gun. Proper placement of shot may extend that 50 yards or so.but how many times do you get a perfect shot while hunting? I would be worried on penetration on a heavy quartering shot as i have seen his kills for the last 10 years and that is the only issue i have seen with it. other than that its a good short distance gun 100 yard or so. 75yards unless well experianced with it would be better imo.

  17. After 45 years of hunting, I find I have everything I need. But not everything I want. When I really look into wanting something, I often conclude I don't need it. I got new boots last year, so this year I don't think I need anything. I could write a long list of things I want though.

  18. I used a Marlin lever gun in .44 Mag on whitetail for years. It is a fine choice for a fast handling carbine with plenty of power to take whitetail out to 150 yards. A .44 Mag handgun can easily take deer to 100 yards. The carbine barrel gives you extra velocity with a flatter trajectory, while providing even more energy out to 150 yards before bullet drop starts to become an issue. However, putting a scope on one limits it's quick handling a little. Not putting a scope on one limits it's range to what your eyes can do with the open sights. Peep sights are a good choice for an upgrade to the open sights. I always used plain 240 grain jacketed soft point bullets in my .44 mag carbine. They worked well and I think will save you some money over your hard cast ammo, which isn't needed for whitetail at all. Actually, the hard cast ammo may not expand too well on thin skinned deer. Why do I not hunt with a .44 Mag carbine today? I actually found the deer I shot with it were all under 75 yards where I hunt, so I now use a Rossi .357 Mag lever gun that does a fine job under those conditions. It also allows more versatility for other hunting when I load it with standard .38 Special ammo. Plus I have a .357 revolver that I can match it with. You should never feel under gunned with a .44 lever gun when you are only shooting to 150 yards or less.

  25. Could'nt fine the thread you mentioned. Seeing the animals is why Im out there no one get enjoyment out of looking at trees all day. Im not saying I need the 15 or 20 deer a day I am saying that is how is was and now most are lucky if they see half that all season. I don't know what deer you were getting back then but 50 or 60 pounders were not what we were getting. I never said I do not like a challenge. I like hunting a old smart deer buck or doe. I am saying that some days I like to just go in the woods and watch the deer. That is hard to do when they are not there. As for ten a day being easy or 10 in a heard near the park, just drive down 19A every day as I do and you will see it is hard to see 10 deer a week out in those fields anymore. I don't want to see just big bucks I want to see deer period. You said you like a challenge yet you brag about how easy it is to find the big bucks. Just like other trophy hunters the only challenge you want is the challenge of keeping someone else from getting your big buck. As I said I am in the woods a lot.I buy a license to hunt and fill my freezer not decorate my walls and brag about the big buck I got. When I can no longer fill my freezer I will stop hunting but I will not stop going to the woods. The way you and many others think is why hunting is going down hill so fast. Sooner then later real hunters will nolonger have a place in what will be a so called hunting world. It will no longer be hunting it will be buying a product and that is something I will gladly step away from

  27. Don't know what area you're going to but where we are no one can ever get a reliable GPS signal. Bring 2 compasses, MINIMUM. I prefer 3 because there've been times that I thought my compass was lying to me and I've compared the three to make sure they were accurate. I have found one to be off from the other two but if I'd only had two I wouldn't know which was right. I try to have two of each of the important things. Compass, fire starter, knife.

  29. Well, I guess I'm just puzzled. I have a huge soybean field directly across the road from my property. It's been a dry summer and I have the only pond around for 3/4 of a mile or so. I have great undisturbed thickets/bedding areas. I have cams at on paths heading to the soybeans, my clover plots, and my pond. I have bucks moving through each Sept-Nov., but with the soybeans, clover, and pond, it just makes me wonder why some bucks aren't there year round... Whatever... as long as they show up when it counts!

  31. Not only does it happen all the time, the anti-gun folks are trying to tell the general public that it rarely ever happens. They're jumping on the "good guy with a gun" saying by claiming stats don't back it up. Of course they will once again be exposed as liars, as there are stats that back it up, and the number would be even higher if they had to report cases where a gun was only shown, but not fired, in order for someone to have stopped a crime.

  32. Dont worry Wooly, It wont be long and there will be no hunting on state parks. With guns anyway's. The bikers and hikers will soon out number and over power hunters and the state will fold for the monies. How the heck wll we hunt when Ny takes all our guns away? Here is where you pencil in Archery and X-Bow's if we are lucky!

  38. Recommend you review: http://huntingny.com/forums/topic/23280-what-is-is-your-pack/ That covers most of the hunting and safety related stuff you will need. As for setting up a camp, if its a semi permanent camp for more than 3 nights or for the deer season you will have to get a form from the local ranger and fill it out and return it him. He will approve it and return it to you and you post it on your campsite when you erect your camp. If you plan on back packing for just a few days you don't need to bother with it. Remember to go as light as possible. You want to have time and energy left to hunt. The deer are spread out quite a bit in the Adirondacks but seem to come out of the woodwork during the rut. There are some real dandy bucks up there. Good luck.

  39. I would set up camp near some water. Comes in handy for washing , etc. Keep in mind if you guys do get lucky, how far you'll be from transportation. Sometimes being way back in isn't always the best. Dragging a deer through Adirondack terrain is not easy. Lots of rock, boulders, downed trees, nothings level. For your first time doing this I would go easy on how far you go in. And as others have said, definitely a compass and topographical map and know how to use it. Weather is another factor. Be prepared for anything. Snow, rain, cold, warm. It's a lot of fun, but if your not prepared, it could turn into one of those "I'll never do that again".

  40. wrap the head and neck in a moist cloth, then lay the feathers and tail flat and freeze it in a garbage bag. Double bagged. Then bring it frozen to the taxidermist.

  42. I agree call the taxidermist, but this is what I "used" to do. Inspect the bird that you want done, try to pick a bird that does not have a broken bill, broken feet, or lost too many feathers. Put cotton in mouth and in anus, to stop body discharge.. blood, feces. Look for blood on feathers and clean with cold water, working with the direction of the feather.(it can be hard to get off if blood is left on too long) look for holes with blood, and GENTLY put a little cotton in it, if necessary.. PROTECT those feathers from breaking .. Dead birds don't grow new feathers.. sorry , I had to add that because I used to say that alot. Bring panty hose (If they still sell that stuff)... Slide bird head first into panty hose making sure that you do not bend, or break feathers....You can actually do that in the field to keep feathers from breaking. Watch the neck when you slide it in. With pheasants keep the tails straight.. If no panty hose...Use brown wrapping paper, or cut brown paper food shopping bag. Wrap bird , feathers down in that. (do not use newspaper especially if there is white on the bird because the ink may run from the paper to the bird. You can put the bird in a plastic bag to freeze it after you wrap it in panty hose, or paper... After bird is wrapped for taxidermist FREEZE it. This is what I used to do, but it's been a long time and may have left something out, or maybe other guys can add to it..I'm writing it from memory, which isn't as good as I'd like these days.. Hope it helps
