Hunting is becoming killing for some people. Why not just gather up a bunch of deer, put them in a pen, and let the "hunter" pick out the one they want? One stop shop for deer. Unfortunately that seems to be where it's heading for some people. No need for learning the way of the whitetail, woodsmanship, patience, even becoming proficient with your weapon of choice. Just drive up, kill a deer, pack it up and head on home. That is why I spend time here, on this site. The vast majority are real hunters and would never think of not hunting for their venison or antlers. It's up to us to keep "hunting" as it should be. United we stand. Divided we fall.

So some of you may remember my excitement this past fall when I got not one, but two bobcats on my trail cameras. IIRC it was about three weeks apart and they definitely looked like different 'cats and only 800 yards (WAG). None of the guys I know in the area have ever seen one or had one on camera and that was pretty neat to me. A friend in the area is a pretty serious trapper and just yesterday we were discussing how cool it'd be if he or his buddy trapped one but obviously you can't target them, it would just be caught in a set for fox or coyote of course. Well, darn the luck, he got one today! After a quick trip back home to get a board with a "V" notch cut in one side of it and round up his buddy to take pics, assist in the release and stand guard (!!) they got the female bobcat out of the trap no worse for wear. She scrambled back and jumped up on an old pallet and sat there, just feet away and watched as my buddy reset the trap! It took about 5 minutes to get things squared away and she sat there the entire time just watching. After they finished up at this set they ventured up the hill to check another set and a red fox was in that one. The funny thing is, yesterday I spent about 3 hours within feet or yards of these two sets, looking for the "right" tree to hang a stand in for next fall's archery hunt! I ran the chain saw for probably 30 minutes while clearing some downed trees as close as 30-40 yards too and had the 4wheeler there also. Obviously bobcats and fox think I smell pretty good!

That speech yesterday gave me the same feeling as fingernails on a chalkboard. She needs to fade away, not stage a comeback.

It's not that I'm not killing deer, I passed on 11 different bucks at home this year. I'm not seeing deer I want to kill.

No doubt they will/have been used. Trail cams tell ya when deer are walking by and that was ok'ed. A guy will fly a swamp and see whats in there and if he likes the looks of it he will get some guys together and drive it. I guess it would work better with snow on the ground as far as seeing. They let ya shoot pigs out of choppers for numbers control. Hunting is gone by the wayside from what it ever was. Now everything is designed to make it easier to kill and control. Not Hunt!

never hunted with hounds so what do I know but you want to run dogs consistently threw others property that is used for deer hunting during deer season (or close to it)because of a study???? Any bow hunters or gun willing to let him start this summer and during deer season run dogs consistently??? Im sorry but I think you would be hard pressed unless a owner had a yote problem. Ask the first three months of the year we probably would let you respectively a couple of times ~ consistently? No. I know a few posted some very good stories supporting this referred study but I do not believe our land is better off having someone consistently hound hunt it than not. I'm sure there was a study on how making the first two weeks of bow season doe only in some areas would drastically reduce the deer population. DEC should get a refund for that study.

I love these discussions, there really isn't a bad choice. With bullet technology the smaller ones that used to be borderline are now great . The old reliables are only better. There are guys like me who are still looking for the perfect cartridge and most all of us know that there isn't one but it sure is fun buying new guns and looking for it.

The average "drone" owner isn't likely to ever the develop the flying skills necessary to make it effective for hunting. Not to mention the skills required to translate aerial photography into an actual ground game. Technology has certainly made things easier than they were a decade ago, but it's not as easy as people think. I've been paid to fly model aircraft (drones) on several occasions involving agricultural research and/or crop reconnaissance for both Universities and businesses. A group of people in a command trailer would receive the down-link from my aircraft and tell me where they wanted me to put the aircraft. I was hired for my piloting skills, but it took a crew of people to take advantage of those skills, and an entirely different crew to make sense of the information that we gathered. Someone in NYS who knows their property well enough to actually do aerial surveillance doesn't need it for hunting purposes. The FAA has recently instituted a rule/law that all "drone" owners must register their aircraft and display the registration numbers on their aircraft. Law-abiding hobbyists are generally complying with this registration. I don't know if this legislation deals with hunting issues or not, but I'm guessing that if you find a crashed model on your property it won't have a registration number on it.

A big part of Representative Walden's point was that the Federal regulatory bureaucracy is simply unwilling to work with The People. His examples make that astoundingly clear with respect to his constituents in Oregon. The basic argument with this thread and with the 'Welfare Ranchers" thread is based on the assumption that the Federal Government bureaucracy knows what's best and that it can always be counted on to do the right thing. Representative Walden knows from first-hand experience that this is not the case.

Hmm, that's where I got the stuff processed back in November but he said he didn't make sausages! Maybe I didn't ask the right question...? This is the same uncle charlie he has a metal building behind his house and a whack of skull caps over the door, right? I just called costanza and I didn't understand their website properly: Jan 16 is the cut off for "frozen" sausage, but she said I can bring in frozen burger, they will make smoked sausages, and I can freeze those .Going to give it a shot. I have tried chilli--and I like it fine. I am also going to try burger with 80/20 ground beef mixed in as spaghetti sauce tonight but my wife is about to just say no to all of it, but she has showed hope that sausage would work. I don't have a grinder... or any cooking/culinary skills whatsoever. I can bake cookies and use a bread making machine, that's about it.
