Irish Spring bar soap as deer repellent
dbHunterNY replied to LET EM GROW's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
old thread got kicked back up i see. still i read back thru it. interesting to know how this works year to year. -
6 dudes from 8H walk in to get tags for out here and they get handed just 1 to share that'd be a bummer. it's unreal how many tags you guys get and fill out that way. i mean i lived and hunted out there but it's still hard to comprehend sometimes.
-
if i know i'll have the time or need to fill them, i'll apply for area i live in which requires preference points and then second choice is usually a guarantee like a bow only area of WMU 4J. if i don't have the time to fill the guaranteed tag i won't apply. i limit myself to one buck but that still leaves me with two tags for doe even without DMPs.

Live from the rifle range
dbHunterNY replied to Robhuntandfish's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
i don't think it's a hot barrel. not in just 3 shots. it'd string them more in a line i think. your well into sub-MOA so it could be any of a lot of things. it could be just the barrel harmonics and the way it groups. also it could be just you. when you're heart beats you might see a slight bounce in the crosshairs. depending on when the shot breaks i've always found them to effect up and down much more than L to R. you've got a pistol grip which effects it less than standard rifle stock but pressure from your hand and on the trigger can do the same even if nice and square behind the gun. i'm not an expert. -
What the hell is this miss mosh.....
dbHunterNY replied to Robhuntandfish's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
i don't think it's a planted for hay. you'd have more grasses and this looks like it was just left. it might be possible they tried to drill in some oats simply for errosion control but it didn't over take the weeds that well because of the draught like conditions we've had. it may be intended for CRP. it might also be that the person planting the fields just didn't get to it in time. anytime they plant something nitrogen fixing to prep for another crop it's really the only thing there and they spray it to kill it down before they plow it under. this doesn't seem to be the case though. fallow fields provide lots of tonnage for food. just don't have quite the draw. -
that's a lot of targets for a lot of fun.

no lifetime here. it's probably still worth it for cost savings but i don't trust NYS enough to know they wouldn't screw me out of something anyway. I just buy tags on a year to year basis.
-
i don't have much experience with scopes on smoke poles. about 10 or so years ago i bought the Nikon Omega 3-9x40 when it first came out. worked fine since. haven't changed it. i've gotten it to hold sub-MOA at 100 yards.

New stock - ugly or nice?
dbHunterNY replied to Steuben Jerry's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
looks like your good. nice shooting. -
something about carving wood. there's several carvers around here that draw crowds at the fairs. years ago in the antique bldg at the fair this older gentleman used make baseball bats on a lathe with chisels. he would have all kinds of young rowdy boys, including myself, watching him carve them out in awe. He loved it. You would've thought what he was doing was an act of God.

gotta love once august gets here. not long now.

This year the QDMA will have a small building with local deer mounts from recently taken bucks if not all from this past season. I'll probably be there a bit. It'd be cool to have members of this forum stop on in if i'm around.
-
i would've been there and you might have met me but i was out of town. We have the our QDMA deer booth there every year. we have much bigger and better setups with mounts at Washington County and Schaghticoke Fairs. For it's size it's a nice fair.

happy bday

wife and family members have it. i've said i won't download it for that reason. it'd just make me drink more and spend more money on beer.

friend told me a story. late season with a monster of a buck in front of his buddy. he struggled in the cold to draw the bow lower. after several attempts the buck got some bad vibes and trotted outa there. same conditions as they're talking and the buddy is drawing back level with ease and shooting. friend i guessed asked him why he didn't just draw back level when he had the buck in front of him and he just about puked on the spot from hindsight and disappointment. i wished i was there but the way he told it was still funny.

i've stopped going there, for the most part. even when i did i still only bought stuff on super clearance during the off season.

New stock - ugly or nice?
dbHunterNY replied to Steuben Jerry's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
each have their own look. doesn't look much different than a biathlon or match rifle. i've been thinking about upgrading my walnut stock on my deer rifle that's getting beat up. mcmillan mcwoody synthetic keeps catching my eye. -
drawing without pointing at 45 degrees down will help your shoulders. mixing it up helps too. alternate coming down or up to the bullseye. you have to be floating on the bullseye to hit it. moving your finger in front of the trigger or just changing the tension in your hand definitely will move your pin as you've figured out. with your finger on the trigger before you're actually executing the shot make sure you keep back tension. if you "collapse" as they call it and have the string take off a little on ya with your finger on the trigger it's likely you'll let the arrow fly without being "dialed in". i wish more guys dropped the ego and accepted help. if olympic archers need coaches then we need to cut the shit and should be open to a little constructive criticism. i wasn't there but i wouldn't doubt it was time well spent.

yea that's what will be on the menu. i've got some that's just sitting around from all the different deer functions i've been too. hopefully i can get to it within the next couple weeks. I've got Whitetail Institute AlphaRack Plus and Ambush that i'm hoping will still germinate. been sitting around for a couple years. I've got a couple others that's more a clover chickory blend. probably save that for some open logging roads.

looks good. been busy so i haven't gotten to it yet. getting down to the last minute now.

Ok All You ATV Experts

i thought to use a slow moving vehicle sign (orange triangle) it has to be governed not to exceed 25 mph? we have a JD gator with one on it but only because it's a turd and doesn't go fast. i think it was different several years ago. -
Pics through my spotting scope
dbHunterNY replied to Gencountyzeek's topic in Hunting Related Pictures
i know they say can't eat the horns but the he looks pretty stout being a deer with some age and it's still summer! Not sure what the PA girth chart would say but there's a lot of meat on those bones. I use grind through a gun for jerky so that's a lot of jerky! -
so you going to buy it?! lol i would've bought multiple guns from him but the wife just booked a vacation and we had to replace washer and dryer that crapped out. rather unfortunate timing.
-
No you just spend it relatively wiser. Put it this way say I have $80k to spend on a toy, a situation not as common. I'd rather buy a dozer at a good price than a say a sports car even if I want the car a bit more. Both are fun and id use either one. I could rent out and get work done with the dozer though enough so it'd pay itself back and then some. Now I've got a dozer and money to buy a sports car. Cars depreciate so much when I do get the sports car maybe it's a couple years old and not new off the show room. Still almost as nice but thousands less. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
