Great idea, I'll be sure to let him know it is from a hunter!

Hey Rockspeck, let me add to the days tally. Small buck shot a last minute of legal light. Very glad to get this deer, as I will have only one more day of hunting until muzzleloader, and the freezer is EMPTY!- 7236 replies

Congrats Turkey feathers! Way to stick with it! -
Who's giving it a go this week and late season with bow or muzzleloader
Otto replied to rob-c's topic in Deer Hunting
I'll be out this week and all weekend for shotgun, and again for the muzzleloading season. I have had no shots on deer, and have only seen two deer, and two white flags so far. Still hoping for a late season miracle! Plus I booked a trip to Ohio for their muzzleloader season in January. I've never been and it sounds like a lot of fun, and some new hunting experiences. -
Hey Rockspeck - I bet you were wearing that new orange stuff when you shot that big buck yesterday!

Over the men's urinal: We aim to please, you aim too, please!

Wow, I am thankful you hunt in Western NY and not Central NY. I always thought "Trespassers Will Be Shot" was a tongue in cheek saying, not someone's reality!

I wear an orange vest, always. I store a lot of gear in the big pockets, but I do carry a backpack (camo) too. I usually will have an orange hat, unless it is raining, then I wear a waterproof camo hat. I should probably get an orange waterproof hat for when I need that. My neighbor told me on Opening Day: ,"By the way, we wear full camo and sit on the ground or in stands. Safety First! " Amazing. Not even a stitch of orange? And you tell me Safety First? Not sure why it is not required in NYS, seems like a no brainier rule to me.....maybe that's why. Maybe they could reverse the Back Tag rule at the same time.

Most receipies call for the meat to be browned first. I have seen one that tells you not to brown it first though.

Good plan and try your best to stick to it! You never know, the new hunters may be real jerks, and they might realize the great deal they were getting too.

In fishing at least, they tell us to throw the big ones back and let them breed to pass on their genes. If you are going to harvest a few fish, keep the smaller, but legal, ones. Why is it the opposite for deer? I'm sure there are a lot of factors, but it seems to me that the article, which I have not yet read, but will, makes a lot of sense.

I hunted today after it finally stopped snowing. 36 hours straight with snow, I have about 20" in snowfall and several drifts over four feet. In the fields it was over my knees most of the time, and up to my waist in some areas. It was tough walking for sure, felt like uphill both ways. Even in a section of protected woods, there was a foot or more to walk through. At least it was a quiet walk! I did see some tracks, but no sightings. it has still been windy, so any tracks from yesterday are already covered over. these were from this morning or later. The alfalfa fields are covered over completely. Maybe with the warm ground, and some temps above freezing, some green areas will open up and the deer will return.

I don't know the dates or details, but there is a "training period" that is outside of small game season that allows you to do this. I don't believe it is allowed during small game season though. Check the DEC website, I know it's in there.

Good idea, stick together. I'd give anything to fish with my Grandfandfather again.

I voted for Saturday just because I am so anxious to get the gun season started, especially this year. But I do remember the Friday, Saturday and Sunday prep days and Monday opener, along with the socializing and get togethers without the prospect of needing to hunt the next day.

The one time I saw a mule kick was a shot right through the heart.

The food vacs take some getting used to, but you should be able to seal them up and leave absolutely no air in there, especially for something like a steak. Make sure the inside of the plastic bags is dry and clean, I wipe mine with a paper towel before sealing. Also, make sure all of the edge of the bag is inside of the vac channel. Lastly, be sure you're getting a good seal, sometimes flipping over the foam seals will help. Be sure they are dry too. Nice deal on the steaks, especially US Prime!

You can find a pretty decent ground blind for around $100 at Gander or Field and Stream, even Cabelas has some lower priced models that are pretty nice. I don't use it much for deer season, except for some really crappy days, there are very comfortable to hunt out of and I can hunt in all kinds of weather. I do use one in turkey seasons, I can spend only about an hour or so on the ground, but can easily spend the entire morning in a ground blind. Turkeys and deer don't seem to notice as long as you keep some windows closed and screens up until you need them down. The ones that use the pop out style frame are the easiest to set up. I would not plan on leaving it out if there is going to be any significant snow or wind. At the least, knock it down and leave it in the woods, they take two minutes to set up. Also, I don't leave them out in the sun for extended periods of time. One of them turned almost bright red when I did that. A few cans of camo paint fixed that for a while though. It would be a nice gift for an 80 year old guy, and it would certainly let him hunt for longer than sitting behind a mesh screen with no protection from wind, rain or snow.

The last time I had tenderloins, I placed two of them side by side and stuffed goat cheese in the middle, then tied it together with butcher twine. I also wrapped peppered bacon around it. Grilled it on the gas grill on medium to low heat. Took about twenty minutes, it was done when the bacon was crispy and starting to blacken. You definitely want it to be rare to medium rare (at the most). The outer thinner edges will be more well done, those are the parts my wife eats, I get the rest!
