Most of the "bad luck" I've seen in hunting has way more to do with not practicing with a chosen weapon and shitloads less what color an animal is.
-
Thats because a specific local event might seem catastrophic. But long term you can knock the shit out of whitetails and they will rebound.

Carl Pepe owns the studio in Westchester Jonas Bros still operates in Colorado, but that too is owned by not a Jonas family member

Mauser.......Mouser is a cat. LOL And a 7mm Mauser is a 7x57 if you are looking for ammo.

Ha....just bought my first one to try, not really wanting a cap after crawling in on knees in 2 I used to own. So far I really like it.

DEC Proposes Potential Future "Holiday" Deer Hunt
Dinsdale replied to CapDistPatriot's topic in Deer Hunting
Only on a hunting forum would a potential about adding hunting days turn into who spends more.... Hunters or snowmobile riders. -
You could argue this til blue in the face. How many times do you see someone clawing open a box of ammo at a store and pontificates to his buddy that it 'sure looks like a good deer bullet' when its a varmint round with a really cool name and package. Folks just look at the cheap price for their one box of deer bullets that will last 5 years cause they MAYBE sight one in shot a year. Meanwhile the only connection between the hunter and game IS the bullet; and can be the cheapest form of insurance to actually killing a game animal effectively and cleanly. Like you said a sample size of one is significant, and 2 is proof positive.

Sterling is in 3P isnt it? 3P has early season or is there no hunting that early there?

100% Discussion about a cartridge failure is useless to point out without knowing bullet type and why I specifically stated a quality all copper round as Lawdwaz uses. My first 30 cal was a 300 RUM. <<< go big or go home. Spectacular performance on 500 lb + game, full traverses from front shoulders though rear hams. (180 gr trophy bonded bearclaws) 26" barreled fire breathing sledgehammer, on both ends. 7 lb rifle. LOL Good luck with NULA.
-
I'll do it..... Neither. Get a 243win and shoot a 90 gr all copper bullet like Barnes TSX or Noslers e-tip. Little recoil at a typical hunting weight rifle, and zips right along making all copper perform well.

RST makes 2 1/2 shells, even rolled crimped paper hulls, for old guns of several velocities and even non lead options. Not cheap, but there are several manufacturers other then RST for old guns. (and components) I have a hammer damascus sxs thats fun to hunt with and over 130 years old. Its going on next Africa trip. Bought it for peanuts because gun store said there was no way to shoot it safe and its a wall hanger. LOL

Corona Virus Thread
Dinsdale replied to Al Bundy's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
It was like this after 9/11 Trade Center attack. Actually even crazier, realtors were sending out letters with what they thought you could get if you sold through them cold canvassing owners. Just helped a co worker finish up his house for sale near New Paltz, got more then expected. He's off to SC and low property taxes. -
Just like in woodworking; its the dull tool that'll hurt you, not the sharp ones. Made some knives last couple years, fun hobby. Given almost all of them away. I use DMT diamond stones for almost everything, and ceramic to hone but thats mostly woodworking stuff. So I sharpen tools a fair amount, at least once a week 2 or 3 chisels/plane blade/etc.....way more then average hunter for a couple deer a year (maybe same as someone trapping) and know how to get a really good edge. That said, I carry a Havalon for hunting.

You can print your own fishing license (also trapping) I print a couple and laminate them, toss one in each car, extra in tackle box.

I attended a hunting banquet, one of those attending wanted to see a video on elephant, a how to by the outfitter I have been using and wants to know whats it like. So we are off in a corner table before the event watching it and were chatting about content when this guy sits down with us. Ive seen him before; hes the guy that always shows up at every rubber chicken banquet but never donates a dime other then the cost of a ticket and has an opinion how to run everything, but doesn't volunteer. Anyway he asks if I've hunted "over there" and killed an elephant, I say yes..... And he says I should be in jail or shot for killing african animals. This isn't new, I worked a booth at Harrisburg show for an african outfitter and all 3 years someone would get all worked up about it standing there talking stupid.
-
I've had other hunters tell me I should be killed for hunting cape buffalo and elephant. And thats not on the internet, right in the same room.

Post of the year right there^^^^

Oh no. New job. (highest of high end residential in cabinet end of things) I seem to be a very fortunate individual as I love what I do for a living; I enjoy accomplishing a project as much as anything else I do as a hobby. I cant believe folks pay me to build stuff, the more complex and demanding the better. Even building a deck spins my propeller if I can challenge myself to getting it done faster and significantly better then the next guy. Had a bit of a health scare last 2 years that we think is behind me (awesome doctor after having one that I wouldn't piss on if on fire), and I'm back on my horse full tilt. I cant ever see me in traditional retirement role, but I also have been fortunate to do what for many would be bucket list stuff when working and taking huge chunks of time off (one year I hunted every single day of deer season in NY, from northern opener to end of long island closing, 28 days on safari in 2 African countries on one trip.....etc) Being motivated talent I have been able to call my shots and adjust schedule when I have wanted so that works in my favor. Life is good.

Doing Landowner tag hunts can bridge the distance between public land DIY and full cost outfit hunts. You know you have a tag, and know you have a designated block of property often in the 5- 12000 acre range that is private. Often includes camping site if desired or even some sort of bunkhouse accommodations. Outfits in a world of hurt this year, many wont make it through the travel issues. Best guys I shared a camp with were in their late 70's and life long friends; they were having time of their lives. Never too late. In another camp, played guide for a guy 78 on his first animal he ever killed; was without a doubt one of the highlights of all the trips I have ever done. He had accompanied another hunter but felt he was slowing them down on long treks, so I invited him to have some short forays as I had quota on my license. Ex military and handled my rifle well to make a bang flop 100yd kill shot. Made his trip and mine, all he talked about for the next several days, it was great. I bet he told that story a hundred times to the folks back home at the local watering hole.

Sounds like you are back to work solid now? I gave myself a birthday gift and quit my job. Better offer and no more after hours calls ever again for me. (they have work booked through 2021)

Go for it. Taking the tenderloins out from a slit takes less time then to type this sentence, you dont even need a knife other then the slit, just run your fingers under to the ends and they pop right off. I carry 2 pieces of house wrap about 6 ft square. Carcass goes on one and meat tossed on the other. If you hunt when its warm, get some cloth meat bags, they'll stop any flies. Quarters I like bone in, boneless is like packing jello in a bag. I learned caribou hunting (try and find a tree on the tundra with a block and tackle/gambrel. LOL) 20 minutes from start to walking out all cleaned up on a deer sized animal. All with a Havalon Piranta if you know anatomy and dont use a knife as a pry bar. You're not butchering, just remove full sections at the major attachments. A hot carcass skins by hand once started. One thing I've learned watching both professional slaughter guys and game skinners doing hundreds of animals a year; average joe uses way to much knife time on a carcass. It leads to hair and cuts in hides. They do however make strategic hand holds in hides at the edges and muscle quarters to assist handling and pulling.

Posting Property - Private vs State Land
Dinsdale replied to GreeneHunter's topic in General Chit Chat
You are wrong......check your google again. If the link says that, its misinformation too. They misquoted it from here; http://orleans.cce.cornell.edu/environment/forestry/woodlot-management/dealing-with-trespassers Trespassing is illegal even if your property is unposted. However, if the land is unimproved, vacant, or unfenced, you will find it more difficult to prove that a person committed trespass. If you wish your unfenced cropland to have effective, yet economical, protection, a series of posted signs is a good first step. On land you lease for agriculture use, you need the permission of the landowner to post the property. If you are authorized to do so, you can place your name on the posted signs, so it is clear who intends to protect the land. You like to think that the property in Orange county is some sort of no mans land. EVERY piece of property in NY has an owner (private or govt). The owner might not care who is trespassing there or ever does anything about it, but if its private its trespassing even if not posted. -
Tennessee wildlife set the cams.....TWRA Do you think NY DEC should be re-tasked for violent crime?
