  1. Flung one at 40. First shot of the night and first time at 40 with the new bow.
  2. Looking Good Moog! Thats exciting i bet! You will definitely notice when they start hitting them! Especially if your near any bedding cover. If you have an abundance of good quality foods around, your deer probably wont eat them heavily yet. If a lack of quality/preferred food is present at that time, they will eat them early no doubt. Deer waiting for frost to eat brassica plants is a false statement. The only reason it seems that deer wait for frost to eat brassicas is for the fact that after a good frost, most plants die and are no longer green/preferred.. Most common brassica plants for food plots stay green below freezing, even some more than others. Therefore after frost, they will definitely eat what ever is green and palatable still... Brassicas. I used to be a believer of that phrase for a long time, until i did some digging when i had my first brassica plot get wiped out early.. That is why you will see Deer browsing green honeysuckle leaves in Novemeber.. Its the only green left in the woods..
  3. Grow would use 9$ feed bag corn, Get some ears on some stalks, non eon others. etc. .. I broadcast it several times. But having your seed treated with a powder to repel birds is key IMO if your only planting it in a small area like a screen etc.. I get great germintaion with broadcasting corn.. But once it gets 4-8" tall the birds pulled it from the ground just to eat the seed. Talk about Frustrating. Since 3 failed attempts over 2 grow seasons, I refused to plant Corn as a screen. lol. Any idea what the seed was treated with to repel birds?
  4. YErp, I threw in the towel and covered everything with cereal grains. Different seed in each plot
  5. The landowner is getting old, and just a few weeks ago He put the property in his daughters name. She knows I hunt there and have used the property for many years and have always taken care of it and respected it as my own. Helped them out when I could. etc.. We've known each other for many years. Well as soon as the land was put in her name, Some body snuck in and Leased it out somehow..
  6. Hopefully today you can get the much needed moisture! I know I dont need it but, it will help with overseeding my beans this week. What a difference, May I ask why you plant your cereal grain so early?
  7. Definitely worth the gamble! They handle browse better and their protein numbers stay high until dead. I think they are great for early bow plots, planted late summer with a brassica/bulb or another type of annual like Balansa. That way when Beans die, you still have some preferred foods available. Again, Im big into mixes for many reasons.
  8. I have a 1/3 acre of forage soybeans planted on July 30th for my wife to hunt over during Early Bow season. Believe me I know the power of green soybeans in Bow season. It is the highest on the preferred list no doubt. But ive also seen the Magic/Power of Late season Bean Pods. Therefore i have a plot for early bow season and a plot for late season. I know other people who dont think soybean pods will attract deer during winter. Yet Most of these people dont understand either that, hunting pressure or any type of pressure for that matter, and an abundance of food else where can keep deer from eating them. Lack of near by Cover etc.. Beans are much more nutritious during the winter than anything else you could possibly plant for the whitetail. While something is better than nothing, If im trying to harvest one of our hit list bucks, I have to pull them off neighboring property .. And my Best bet over the years, seems to be late season, The way my property is setup. My cams are proof that the bucks will be in and around these late season plots all day and night for a couple of weeks during the "Post Rut Bulk Up" Period. These beans should begin yellowing by weeks end i would think. Then they will get over seeded with triticale ..
  9. That is what I tried at first Hoping they wouldn't attempt jumping it. Always wanted to try it and see. Well they walked right through it. This pic shows it, but the interior fence had sagged from not being tight enough and the wind. The wind moves/stretches it like crazy. Even after tightening it back up.. they still just pushed between the lines of fencing..
  10. I just lost my prime hunting ground last night. What a complete awful feeling. All the time and money I put into plots this year on the property. Finally after a few years of rotating crops the plots look great, and now I have to go terminate them all so no one benefits from them.. totally bummed, enjoyed the property for my entire life, hunted it since day1..
  11. The yellow tape is just cheap flagging caution tape. But i left the electric parts non powered for the first couple weeks to test the theory of a non electric dual perimeter fence.. well, they walked right between the lines, etc.. It didnt stop them whatsoever. So on the 3rd or 4th week I powered the fence.. and for some reason I wasnt getting good power though it. I could hold onto it and get zapped but it wasnt anything to be terrified of. But It must have got them good enough with there wet nose and non rubber soles lol, the deer stayed a ways away from it for many weeks. They wouldnt even eat the beans outside the fence. For the last few weeks its been non powered and the deer must still not like it because they have not touched them. IT grounded out and burned up the battery. Just needs new batteries. I need to clean it up and re power it so i can keep them out until atleast the rut or later.
  12. Couple pics of the construction of my "Barn Plot" for 2018 A difference of protected and unprotected beans.. Last pic is a view from the edge of the plot in.. Plot is slightly over an acre.. I have Hybrid sorghum and Egyptian Wheat as a barrier screen so no one can see from the seasonal road in"(which is about 75 yards to my right). And the deer feel more secure. AG beans protected by fence, almost ready to turn yellow.. The outside edges are a brassicsa bulb blend with WW and a clover mix for next year early bow season. Once beans begin the yellowing phase I will seed 100# of Triticale into them for a green understory. A woochuck has been raising hell with my fall plantings.. He needs to catch a pill soon..
  13. Looks Good Mr! Hope to get out this week to do the same with scrapes. Bet you got a couple of wall worthy candidates over there!
  14. I prefer Triticale over all of them as well. Just tough to get unless i go straight to Seedway in hall. going to try and grab some myself in the next day or 2. Planted it last year for the first time. Nutritionally its the best as well.
  15. Wow, wa sjust going to wish you best to return home and heal safely. Glad you are home and better!
  16. Good to hear. Hit the thin spots with cereal grains if you want to fill in the plot. Last i checked my wet brassica areas have no plants left. Dead and gone. I hit it heavy with WW last week. Hope it fills in good now. We got 3 more big heavy quick storms over the long weekend again.
  17. I first start with basically zero pressured woods. Keep all pressure off as much as possible unless necessary each year.. Its the Number one thing that has helped me during hunting season. From there, this year I planted some Grafted Pear Trees I got from a member here. I released many Crowded crab apples on the property. I just found a few that recently just randomly died and dropped all leaves and fruit.. not sure what happened. So theyll need replacing, if i cant cut them back and save them.. I put in an order for The Arbor Foundation Of Oaks i hope to have Planted in November. I also want to get some shrubs in this fall to build permanent screens along the road side. and property line. This year has been the worst with trying to find extra time to get things done. Hoping next year gets better, I feel as though I say this every summer lately.
  18. broadcast in some clovers in the next week or so and you'll have a dandy of a clover plot for next year if youd' like with basically no maintenance whatsoever. Send us some pics when you get the chance! food plot pics are the next best thing besides harvest pics! lol
  19. Is that a cow pasture full of cows in the background? Or the Buck Parade again?? lol! Looks a little like a "Wannabe" frame kind of
  20. ITs a bear, the "thin front legs" looks to me like a plant/weed standing up making them look like 2 thin legs. IMO 100% Bear.. young one but definitely a bear. And its black in color lol
  21. Looks good man! ITs my favorite type of work by far!
  22. It sure is weird this year. We got 3 big heavy quick storms again yesterday and Sunday. Great for my WW but the bulbs not so much. Maybe they'll dry out some this week, but the bulb plants are probably dead or almost by now.
  23. My neighbor started growing garlic this year.. 4 acres worth.
  24. Just remember, especially with grain seed and fresh dirt, turkeys love it! If your seed is exposed and not all under the soil, if those pretty birds get there quick enough, they will have a party in your plot just a picking your seed! lol. Hence the reason i always seed cereals heavy now. Been there..
  25. I also recommend mixing in some clovers if you'd like to turn that into a nice perennial plot. The WW and clover will be first to green next spring. You can still always broadcast WW into clovers the following Fall to get the "N" clover is pumping out, and help keep weeds at bay. Disk up your plot to a decent seed bed, spread WW seed, lightly disk it in or find something to drag(tires, log, fence etc). then if possible use your tractor/truck/atv tires to pack in the plot. Packing helps in several ways. A lawn roller works great too. IF you have rain coming soon, you can leave seed on top and rain will do the rest for you. I broadcast WW on top of an existing plot, 2 nights ago, and last night it had already started germinating laying on top of the un tilled soil.. If adding clovers, a mix of whites will make a great multi year stand with little maintenance, if you want a shorter lived clover plot use med. red clover. Broadcast clover over the top when done packing. Im big on mixing seeds in all of my plantings. Im not a fan of Mono cultured plantings. The right mixes will make a plot even better. They also can help your herd more, as well as your soils.
